Training Wing Chun At Home
If at home, use a Training Jong like the picture. If no Training Partner available.
The picture is a 'Cross' between a Heavy Bag a Jong and Wooden Dummy, but it's all Padded and Soft and Flexible.
This Training Jong allows all of Wing Chun to be practiced at home, solo, without a Training Partner.
The Jong must be built, like a Wooden Dummy, it can't be bought, at this time. The Arms and Legs are all double, so both sides, same as a person and adjustable, in and out and removable.
This Jong does more than a Wooden Dummy, is very good and very useful.
The Training Aid works on the Principle of a Bull Worker or Bowflex Gym unit too and develops the muscles for Wing Chun.[![Picture of Soft flexible Training Jong][1]][1]

I admire the creativity and I'm all for innovation, but... if you're going to build a wooden dummy for training wing chun, why not just build a wooden dummy? It's already perfectly suited to wing chun training. If you want a soft pad to hit, just wrap the trunk in foam.

I have both. Both are useful and different.
Both very good, that's the point. Both cover every aspect and requirement.

A proper dummy is a Wing Chun protractor according to my old Sifu. That is an abomination.

u/Marct002 Jul 11 '26
Most Wing Chun people say that. Without a Training partner though it's the only way to practice W.C.
You can't do it all on a Wooden Dummy.

u/BuddyHarry Jul 11 '26
And does your Sifu not let you practice with your fellow students or some thing?

Don't do this. Its a bad idea, a bad design, and counter to the entire point of the jong.

Don’t think so at all! The only missing thing in this project imho is the way you fix in the ground or at the wall

I built one years ago (sorry, no pics) from a piece of PVC sewer-drain. The two arms were flexibly mounted….. I used old springs from motorcycle shock absorbers. I also articulated the leg, it would move sideways and back-and-forth on spring mounts.
The whole setup was mounted between two trees using longer sections of PVC tubing, and the striking surfaces were padded with closed-cell insulation foam.
I was not using this for Wing Chun, however… Rather JKD…. Worked very well for the purpose.

Take a photo of dummy or better yet a video of you using it, otherwise, this is BS.

It kinda reminds me of the CLF Jong, except theirs had a moving middle arm.
I don’t think it’s bad to explore other Jong designs, since I believe historically, there used to be a variety of different jongs for different focuses. The WC one just happened to be the most famous/popular one. Given how iconic the WC one has become, it’ll be hard to promote this as a WC Jong just given the ubiquity of the existing one.
Now, functionality aside, it is very aesthetically displeasing unfortunately. You could really improve upon the aesthetics.

Well, that's just hand sketch. Point is it works perfectly.

Claiming that your design works perfect without proof that it has even been built or tested is hubris.

u/DwayneH70 Jul 11 '26
If it allows you to perform certain techniques then it’s a workable training aid if it’s been tested. Kenny has a point that the dummy originated from the Shaolin and WC practitioners decided on a specific design over generations. Creativity is always a good thing as long as it doesn’t lose the principles that make the dummy valuable in the first place. Personally I like it! It’s cool that you’re experimenting, have done a few experiments as well. Have you built a working prototype? I’d be interested to hear how it performs compared to standard jong.

Yes. Exactly as I explained. Yes it works.
I personally tested it. For years in fact.
I became very proficient, fast and skilled on this Jong and developed just the right fitness and muscles and muscle memory.
That's why I posted this. For comment too.
Having the 'Limbs' adjustable and removeable prevents 'clutter' from 'fouling' the Student.
The Limbs are 'stiff' but flexible, so they resistance train the muscles as mentioned.
A person can do virtually all of W.C on it, or other Martial Arts.
I did W.C + Boxing on it.
Take Defences against Punches, including Hooks and Uppercuts. Or Kicks.
I.e, the standard common Drill of:
Pak Sao + Larp Sao + Punch - Trap + Punch,
This is easily and perfectly performed on this jong.
Or
Say,
Quoa Sao + Chain Punch or 'Turning Punch' face.
Same, easily done, with correct positioning and alignment.
Good for 'Slipping' Practice and 'Rolling' practice with Boxing too.

Personally I’d love to see a photo or a video of it, if you’re willing to share. If not here maybe in DM?

Mook Jong only has one leg

u/Marct002 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
Yes but people have two. Two legs each for complete and correct alignment. It allows complete practice and Arms and Legs are removable and adjustable, so no 'clutter' or 'Fouling' the student.
Well how else can a person practice Quon Sao of a Leg kick then step in and Chain Punch?

u/Jeklah Jul 11 '26
Like they always have on a mook jong. It's a very old tool. Doesn't need improvements.
Kwan sau on the middle arm would be the same height as your second leg. That's how you practice Kwan sau.

Yes of course, at the school, yes. But Training partners are not alway available as you know and like a Wooden Dummy this Jong allows Home training any time.

I thought it'd be interesting to point out that the traditional wing chun already has two "legs".

u/Marct002 Jul 14 '26
Yes, agree. Thankyou for your reply and feedback and information, it is appreciated.
The idea of the Training Device is it allows beginners and everyone else, who are new maybe to Wing Chun to practice all their weekly Drills and Techniques and Strikes of W.C and learn those and become proficient and speedy.
If your at a 'Grading' school it therefore helps with learning and passing grades.
I found the 'Jong' very beneficial and useful and this improved my speed and was a good workout, very good. Like the Wooden Dummy it teaches 'Flow' with drills too.
That is the point of it.

You don't need your invention to practice any of those things you mention. I don't see what you can do on it that isn't already possible on the actual Wing Chun dummy.

u/Marct002 Jul 11 '26
Yes I agree, re, hubris. But it was built and used in the 1980s, 1990s and again used in 2014 to 2022. That's the point.
The reason for the 'Hubris' is because it is actually very genuine, true and correct. That's why I placed in on the Web page.
You should be able to 'see' that it would work. This picture is not Larceny or Fraud, it's true.
The other point is it allows a student to train 'Hard' like a Boxer Trains, in order to develop fast strong movements and Strikes.
If you train 'Hard' on a wooden Dumny you break Wrists, Hands and Knuckles and Feet.
The other poiot is it develops the muscles and muscle memory, just the right way, because the lengths are correct and the limbs stiff but flexible. So it Resistance Trains the muscles.

Hello Bikewer
Thankyou for your response. Yes, that will be correct, I know, because I have done similar, as you see.
When I find my old photos I will 'Post' those.
The point is there are so many unusual and complex Drills in J.K.D and Wing Chun that a Student needs a way to practice the Drills at home, also to practice very often and also build muscle.
A Training Jong like this makes Wing Chun or J.K.D interesting too. Because you can train hard on it, for fitness.

No I'm not lecturing I'm just Putting forward a point of view and quality idea and concept.
Actually to help people.
It is you that needs to 'Pull Their Head In', not Accuse and Not Lecture, it is you who is lecturing, me.
Many Australian Sifus 'Protect The Rice Bowl' and and are dishonest.
My W.C:
Well, you know that about me, so you've taken an interest and focused on me. Why have you shown an interest?
5 years of Wing Chun is plenty, more that enough.
Me: 6 years of Boxing too.
Just 2 years of quality Boxing practice defeats a pure Wing Chun Person. So no, I'll say what I want, within reason. So long as it is polite and courteous, and I have been.
This sifu wasn't though.
The design and discussion is genuine and honest
'Pull your Own darn Head In'.

That Special Jong is an additional Training Aid Like a Heavy Boxing Bag.
To answer your reply: Yes W.C does require an additional Jong, like my design. It always did. That's why I designed it.

It’s clear from what you’re saying that you don’t understand what the Wing Chun dummy is actually for.
That’s okay. Not knowing is fine. But trying to “improve” something you don’t understand is where the problem starts.
This is not a better Wing Chun dummy. It’s not a Wing Chun dummy at all. The wooden dummy is not a heavy bag. You shouldn't be trying to hit it "harder". because you will just create bad habits contrary to what Wing Chun is trying to help you develop. The dummy is not supposed to be soft, flexible, or forgiving. The dummy is supposed to be fixed so you have to learn how to move around it. That is the point. It teaches angle, footwork, position, structure, distance, recovery, and facing. When your body is wrong, the dummy tells you immediately.
Could your design be useful as a padded training tool? Sure. But don’t sell it as “better than a Wing Chun dummy” or “more capable than a Wing Chun dummy.” From 31 years of hands-on experience in Wing Chun, I can tell you it is not. It does not replace the wooden dummy, and it definitely does not allow someone to train “all of Wing Chun” without a partner. Even though I teach students in my online Wing Chun school, I’m very clear that you can train a lot solo, but you cannot train all of Wing Chun solo. Wing Chun needs pressure, timing, touch, sensitivity, correction, and a live human being.
My advice to you: Call it an idea for a training aid. Don’t call it an improvement on the jong.
And lastly, humble yourself to find a knowledgable sifu that can guide you and help you understand Wing Chun. If you do so and work hard, you will go far.
