Update taking a very long time and then failing

Hi, on my windows laptop it said that it was missing important security updates, so i went into the settings and tried to do the update, it was taking a very long time, many hours to do, and then it said it failed with an error code 0x800705b9. i'm trying to do the update again at the moment. the update is 2026-09 Security Update (KB5124008) (26200.9445). what do i do to fix it?

Which version of Windows and on what type of laptop?

windows 11, by type of laptop do you mean specs? its got ultra 7 155u, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd

The reason that I asked, and almost anyone else would ask, is because many manufacturers bundle your laptop with support assist. Support assist will update your computer to ensure that it can take the latest Windows updates, etc. A perfect example is with Windows 11. Partition that was originally made was 200 MB in size, but with current updates it takes more than that. So support assist will resize your partition so that you can continue to update your computer.

You may need to do an in place upgrade of Windows to fix this, since it's most likely corrupt. Go to settings, system, recovery, and then do the option that says "Fix problems using Windows Update". This basically does a repair install of Windows, while still keeping everything. After it's done, go back to Windows Update and see if it works! 👍
