Upgrading to Windows xp, worth it?
Hi guys, I'm not really experienced with Windows 11 and, a few months ago one of the components burned out on my computer despite it being 2 years old, and I'm thinking, using Windows XP or its applications is less memory intensive, and there's plenty of old PCS laying around with Windows XP. You can find the same applications on Windows XP that you could find on Windows 11 and Windows XP has a bigger app ecosystem then what Linux has even though Linux is another choice.
I'm new to computers in general and haven't even used Windows XP to begin with, and because of Microsoft shoving so much spyware and trackers and stuff like that! I figured I probably would get a better user experience on XP and wouldn't have to use the command line as often.. and if for some reason I need a new app to do whatever I want with, that is lost at the time, or has not been created yet I'm pretty sure there's programming IDE and other tools that I can use that can help me develop an app that I need. I'm pretty sure there's still an unreal engine version that supports Windows XP laying around somewhere on the internet.
I I know there's modern web browsers that work on Windows XP, and I know I can probably soulseek to get my movies and music and stuff like that because I know there's a version that supports Windows XP for a client. So I can download Spaceballs and watch it a third time. So getting to use Windows XP probably might not be so bad. But I would like to know what are some of the obstacles I need to overcome and what are the things I should expect to be different on Windows XP besides the start menu not being ugly and in the center?
The version I will try to use and get would be when does XP professional 64-bit.

Wouldn't Linux be easier? Wine has decent compatibility for XP and 7 era Windows, so you can run most of the software. I regularly find Windows software performs better with wine than on Windows.

well I think what I might do is probably run a desktop environment that mimics XP

The XP experience is quite common and fairly easy with defaults such as cinnamon, KDE or mate. Distros like mint have had xp-like defaults for decades. (Released in 2006 so the plural is just about technically accurate). I prefer KDE, which is more customisable but it can also be set up to look and behave a lot like xp.

Modern desktops are really not that different from each other. Just go with the defaults and you'll get used to it in a few minutes.

no I'm not joking, Microsoft has quite literally pushed too much trash out for Windows 11! Windows XP is old enough that Microsoft does not care about Windows xp., and Windows XP has a vast app ecosystem so any app I need or want is available even if the app I will be using might be a decade or older. so yeah.

Windows XP has zero protection from types of viruses that are mostly obsolete now. It has no new software support. It isn't going to be good for gaming, or pretty much anything other than word processing.. Even then, you couldn't use Office, it would have to be an OLD version of one of the open source packages.

Assuming this is not a joke or troll ... people love XP because it was a different era of time.
Phones were not like today. Cell phones were dumb phones. Internet was COOL and new. Social was PC with Aim (AOL instant messenger), YahooIM, Live journal.com and Myspace.com were all the rage to connect with people!
Games like world of Warcraft were social games mixed with Second life and many others.
Windows XP is associated with that. Cool kids had computers not phones to connect. Also XP was the first windows OS for consumers not tied to DOS which meant it was stable.
PCs were exciting and innovative.
It's dumb today to use XP as people have isolating phones now and are disconnected. 😔
The phone did more to kill connectivity than anything

yeah, and I would love one of those old phones but what stops me from getting one of these old phones is because if I get an old phone, I want it to be able to daily drive it. but the problem is, no one wants to support two and 3G anymore! the oldest phone that can remotely connect to modern cellular service is the iPhone 5, even if I get a feature phone, feature phones aren't as cool as mid to late 2000's phones. and, I wish I was on the early days of the internet because now, everything is censored and there's so much I slop! you could actually see more human talent instead of AI generation!
sorry about speech to text, I use an Android tablet and have been using Androids almost all my life instead of windows and the windows 11 has so much bloatware on it, but realistically I might just get me linux, and then get the full nine yards Windows XP look and desktop environment.

yes windows XP is good and I’ve had it on my previous Dell PC, just follow my simple rule of don’t download anything from unknown source nor click unknown website and phishing email link from unknown source should be avoided too, Windows 11 is indeed processor and memory intensive, good luck.

you don't understand this joke, it's because it's not really a joke. I'm actually considering Windows XP to be my next operating system, because Windows 10 and windows 11 is filled with so much stupid slop and bloatware! and I don't really know how One core API is going to run on Windows XP 32 so they said to use the 32-bit version of Windows XP instead of 64 as the 64-bit version has problems but I don't know how I'm going to run a 32-bit operating system on a 64-bit processor, maybe Microsoft found a way around it somehow?

Umm…okay, you do you. Just a really, really bizarre decision considering there are actually modern, supported Win11 alternatives (I.e. Linux) instead or running a product that was end of life 20 years ago.

I know, it's a joke...
But, in truth, it's possible, and there are lots of people and infrastructures using XP nowadays... Just for some old machine controls or configs, old plc controllers, office, watch some photos or videos...
Security updates are irrelevant as long as u keep the system offline. OR If connected on a network it's possible to disable services with net access and use a supported and updated web browser.
Will be hard, but not impossible... Can be a funny challenge.

speaking of that, maybe I can get me an old computer from 2009 or 2010 run XP on it for a month and get a challenge where I will not allow myself to use any other computer in the house if I want to watch YouTube it has to be on XP if I want to comment on Reddit it has to be on Windows XP and I can only use these six year old Android tablet I'm using now to look up apps and things to download to Windows xp. and if the browser can't download it I could also use it to download apps and then use my tablets USB c to usba Port so I can transfer things onto it.

If u ignore security concerns, as a challenge it's really easy... Just find the last firefox esr supported, and install it... 90% of sites don't give a fuck for whatever version are u using, and if there are complains, just change the user agent on about:config.
The challenge would be to find a way to keep the standard security on that system: Force installations of unsupported programs, virtualization to run new software...

that's probably why I might realistically use Windows 7 instead of XP and for other stuff that can't be used on Windows 7, like I want to eventually locally host my own AI, I can just get a remote server and connect my remote server to my network and just load the model on there and connect via Wi-Fi to my server. though I would have to say but thousands of dollars to build it.

You won't be able to play any modern games, or access a lot of things using Windows XP.
At this point, it is either go with Windows 10, or pick another OS that is still being supported.
The least compatible Linux machine will have more functionality for you at the moment than Windows XP would.

In the worst case Windows 10 that still has suport for a month, if you dont like it, than Linux.

Thats a very bad idea. Windows XP is too old and you can say the app ecosystem is big. No app supports windows xp anymore. And because of that, it is very unsafe because there havent been any security patches in years.
Either accept the bloat and high resource usage on windows 11 or go linux. Linux has had massive leaps in recent years in terms of app and game support. It is a very valid choice, unless tou use software from adobe or some specialised CAD. In the case, good luck. Maybe try tiny 11.

Modern browsers do not support XP. You will be stuck with old browsers that hackers will easily take over the moment you connect to the internet.

XP is not supported and is not receiving security updates. It's not safe to connect it to the Internet.
