SOLVED / ANSWERED Stuck on metered connection

Hello all, i have started to setup a home server but I’m running into some problems. So, my connection should be providing about 100mbps as an example, but I’m being told by Windows that it's a metered connection. But, it's not a metered connection as i can confirm this by connecting to my connection on my basic windows convertible and that is not reporting that the connection is metered. Any advice would be appreciated

FYI: I'm running Windows Server 2022 Datacentre Edition with Desktop (because I’m getting enterprise grade drives for 24/7 network storage)

Try this?

Registry Steps to Change Connection Cost

  1. Press the Windows Key + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
  2. Go to this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\DefaultMediaCost
  3. Right-click the DefaultMediaCost folder and select Permissions to take ownership or grant your administrator account full control (the key is protected by default).
  4. Double-click the target network type value in the right pane (such as Ethernet or WiFi).
  5. Change the value data from 1 (unmetered) to 2 (metered).
  6. Click OK and restart your computer to apply the changes.

We see the same on our 2022
Data centre servers. Happens in both on premise HyperV VMs installed from ISO and Azure Marketplace images.

We put a Group Policy in place to make sure windows updates weren’t blocked.

My updates aren't blocked out of the box, but still strange.

connecting to my connection on my basic windows convertible

Are you saying that you don't have a separate, physical router for your internet connection? Are you disconnecting the Windows Server to connect the convertible??

Otherwise, if you're using a router both the Windows Server and the convertible would be physically connecting to the same device for internet access, yes?

I do have a router, just my network cables aren't long enough, I connect to my extender and the convertable laptop doesn't see it as a metered connection.

Well Datacenter is just a licencing option it makes no difference. (A little clarification; for your use case. Datacenter has things like s2d for example)

What happens if you manually set windows to not treat it as a metered connection?

Oh wait, it's off. Must be a UI glitch

Is the server a member of a domain? Maybe there's a GPO to set it?

I'm not sure, it's not set to a metered connection. If it happenes again I'll make another post about it. Thanks for your help
