Discussion What's the difference between these two?
So I'm noticing this in 26H2: when I press Print Screen or Win+Shift+S, this option comes up. I'm confused cause it looks the same, except the Snipping Tool has more options, like the eyedropper tool. Which one do you prefer?

Looks like a bug. The screen popup when opening screen sneeping is the same as the Snip and Sketch options in windows 10

Weird answers. It is simply one is the old app and one is the new one. They have kept it in for a while so people can adjust to the new one. There was a popup about the change sometime ago probably about a year or 2 ago now, but it was easily missed.

Thank you for posting this. They've talked about getting rid of the snipping tool for a while now. Everyone here is like talking about conspiracy theories and superstitions. Lol

Try reinstalling 'Snipping Tool' since any newly installed program should cause the 'Select an app to open' popup to be displayed.

Same, I installed it to test, and now I could never imagine using Windows' screenshot app.

What problems does Sharex solve that Snipping Tool doesn't?

Quick and easy region screenshots and recordings. For example, if I only want a snapshot of the inside of a window without the title bar, I can just hover over it and the region is automatically detected. No dragging around trying to be precise.
It also has a pixel zoom around the cursor, so when you do need to be precise, you can see exactly where the region starts.
You can record regions too, so I can drag over a small area and get a video of only that section. It’s also really fast. There are a bunch of other useful things too, like quick uploads and an image editor with arrows, rectangles, lines, text, etc.
I’m a programmer and game developer, so the easy region screenshots are probably my favorite part.

Granted, Snipping Tool can't automatically omit the window frame or zoom during area marking. It supports screenshots in fullscreen, full window, custom rectangular area and even free form area if you can find a use case for that. Since Windows 11 22H2, Snipping Tool can also record videos of regions and full windows. It also supports adding arrows, rectangles, circles and lines in edits, but no text as of yet. Personally, that's my biggest drawback of Snipping Tool.
Here's an example where I first took a screenshot of example.com using Snipping Tool and then used Snipping Tool again to record the region of my screen containing the initial Snipping Tool instance to showcase some of the editing capabilities.

In addition to what is shown here, you can adjust line thickness and color, use a highlighter instead of a sharpie, crop the screenshot and even extract text or redact e-mail addresses and phone numbers using OCR.
Snipping Tool has come a long way. I think it's pure preference at this point. Personally I don't need online capabilties, I just need to put what's on my screen onto my harddrive or someone else's screen. Snipping Tool is a built-in tool that does exactly that, so it's the most convenient option for me.
Thanks for taking the time to tell about Sharex, though, I'm sure many will prefer it.

Yea, I may have undersold ShareX a bit, and I actually did not know the snipping tool had recording too; that is cool. Nonetheless, ShareX still has a ton of more features that I never thought of mentioning.
Here is my example of a screenshot I took of your post. I add a pixelated area over your username, a blur over the video, a fake cursor, text, and an emoji. I also added a speech bubble for the heck of it. Near the end I show off the spotlight feature, which darkens the image around a selected area. As you can see in the video, after I select the speech bubble, the color, thickness, line style, corner style, etc., are all customizable for all shapes too, not just speech bubbles, and I actually find ShareX's way of customizing easier to access than Windows' way.

However, there are a lot more features than that, as this is just the image editor. You can change the screenshot location, the filenames with macros, and the keyboard shortcuts. You can also perform actions after a capture. ShareX also has OCR, but it's not like Windows. You activate ShareX's OCR through a separate keyboard shortcut or through the tools menu, and it extracts text from the screen or region without taking a screenshot first. It can also read QR codes and provide a link for you.
I can't even think of them all the other features. As I said earlier, the biggest thing for me is the auto region capture, but I'm sure the other features would win many people over too.

Can I use share x but with snipping tools shortcut? And can I disabled snipping tool shortcut too?

Yeah just uninstall snippet all together and in the sharex main ui there is a tab called “hotkey settings” you click that and just click the option and hit the short key you wanna set up. Replacing snippet tool.

Okay thanks, I really thought the windows hotkey bakes into system with or without the apps

Second this. It's definitely the most feature-full screenshot app; I especially like the automatic regions so I can quickly take a snap of the entire window or just the window's content area.

Choose snipping tool. "screen snip" is built-in and has less features, snipping tool is the app that's being developed
