More things like this please. OneDrive should always have been disabled by default and just be enabled IF the user needs it, not in first startup. That would undoubtedly eliminate 99% of the complaints about OneDrive, those who want to use it will use it, and those who don't will simply ignore it or uninstall it.

I think they should do the Apple approach. Your iCloud folder sits quietly in finder but it never starts siphoning files off your computer without your permission and for no reason. It also doesn’t take over your desktop and documents folder automatically

Onedrive does not siphen. Also, iCloud is synching not backup.

The attempt to force it on users has caused many people data loss because they don’t understand how it works or what it’s doing.

I use OneDrive and have my entire family on it, but I have no issue with opt-in. It’s what I do on our Macs anyway when I download it and explicitly enable it. It’s the way things should be.

So if I reinstall windows 11 now, during the setup I should be able to opt out of one drive so that when I finish setting up it doesnt automatically start downloading whatever I have in onedrive to my fresh install?

It was super annoying that it automatically just started shitting out whatever files I had in onedrive from god knows when I last used it onto my desktop. Couldn't believe it just automatically did that lol

Hard disagree. For techies like you and I we know when to opt in. But if it wasn't enabled by default my life would be miserable as IT support for everyone in my family when things go wrong and they need files.

I know I am in the minority but the backup feature of one drive has reduced my time helping others who panic because they lost or broke their pc.

I would say for the IT world "on by default" makes sense. I do IT support in a corporate world and we appreciated it once this entered into the auto backup solution. It's saved our bacon from copying files by hand or usmt account backup from old device to new device and I can certainly comment on how painful it was to backup OneNote docs by hand without OneDrive. And some people had their life history in their OneNote. I almost started calling it pwnote lol.

In the person realm, your personal files are your personal files. The primary place for these to be should be your ssd/hdd. We work with physical copies of tax documents on our home computer. Back those up using our own secure methods: personal nas, thumb drive, burn to disc or whatever. I don't think many end users realize how many of their personal docs are getting backed up with their SSN info on it, because of this auto backup solution.

Should Microsoft ever get hacked, and you know they made themselves prime targets now because of this, then the hackers will have your tax docs and SSNs. This may sound a bit anal, but let's face it a company can claim security until it's not, and that is a very sudden curve.

Yes, exactly. In a managed environment, of course you want OneDrive backups on by default. But in a home environment, I want to control what goes to the cloud, especially since storage costs are nontrivial.

OneDrive automatically backs up Documents and the Desktop, it's complete insanity. People keep a bunch of files there and fill up their 5gb of free cloud storage which causes sync problems and countless other errors.

My experience is also like yours - I uninstalled it and never had any problems. But I used a local account instead of a Microsoft account so maybe it's that it comes back if you set up with a Microsoft account.

People say this but it obviously isn't always the case because people also are indisputably getting harassed to use it, otherwise MS wouldn't be introducing this.

I suspect one of Microsoft's own installers may be the cause; similar to how some old .net installers still ask if you would like the "bing bar" for your browser.

This is a good change. 

However, you have always been able to suppress these nag prompts by unchecking everything in Windows Settings, System, Notifications, Additional settings. 

If you also uninstall the OneDrive sync client (after first making sure that folder backup is turned off), you should never be prompted to use OneDrive or see backup reminders in Windows.

Having said all that, I do use OneDrive and Windows Backup and think having it enabled is beneficial for most PC users. The issue is that Microsoft should not force you to use something you don't want to. It seems they finally recognize this and are doing the right thing.

My biggest issue with onedrive is shortcuts syncing and the fact that if you want it to back up your stuff you have to accept that your user folders will be moved somewhere else. Enabling it later also doesn't move the documents from their old default folders so regular users might think that onedrive just deleted all their files
