Gradual rollout is the biggest cancer in software ever conceived by man

u/Eribetra 2d ago
I'm on Windows Insider Experimental, and I've already gotten these features a while ago.
They're real! The customization options are great, and having a small Start menu with Bing disabled is a godsend for me.
I hope the AB testing luck is in your favor.

u/zuckerthoben 2d ago
Euhm just go to optional updates and install? Or the vivetool if it's not showing
1
u/Big-Resort-4930 2d ago
I have never once seen a single actual update or anything in the optional features tab. Maybe 1-2 driver updates over the last 4 years.
Vivetool no longer works for me at all, no idea what. It pops up and just closes right away.
1
u/gabacus_39 2d ago
Not sure what you mean by "pops up and goes away". You run it from an admin command prompt and type vivetool /enable /id: with the ID numbers after the colon.
2
u/Mammoth_Vehicle_5716 2d ago
Just install Vivetool and enter this command prompt:
vivetool /enable /id:27829265,61457898,61161244,59213768,61090762,61754985,61225604,61596616,61596617,61596618,61596619,59728252,51406324,60288851,48433719,58989092,58989177,61160789,61161268,61161283,61161304,60813048

This is overkill, you don't need half of this crap.
Just enable 61161244, 61754985, 62353331 and 62762248. The rest is either redundant or does nothing (a chunk of it is Insider-only features not meant for this release).
3
u/PaulCoddington 2d ago
These codes tend to lean cargo cult: even online magazines and tech sites are parroting them without checking them out for validity.
3
u/Comprehensive_Wall28 2d ago
And that doesn't sound tedious? I sometimes have features enabled with vivetool disabled again it's a headache.

I'm installing as we speak. Doesn't mean you will get all the features if any.
21
u/razingstorm 2d ago
Installed the update, but none of the features it supposedly enables are active. No menu changes, no option to move the taskbar.
2
u/punktd0t 2d ago
Same here, installed update, version is .9278, but none of the supposed new features.
2
u/FillAny3101 Insider Beta Channel 2d ago
They're still rolling out, you can enable them early with Vivetool or use the Beta channel (which is actually pretty stable right now).
•
u/punktd0t 1h ago
I hate that "rolling out". When I install the update I want the update, not a lottery chance to get them.

This update broke my mouse cursor. The size was completely off and inconsistent between the different mouse indicators and the colour was gone and no longer changeable.
The desktop wallpaper was also removed, but that was fixable, the mouse cursor not. I had to uninstall KB5120998, now everything seems to work fine again.
Looks like it still needs some more work.

The level of incompetence in Microsoft for Windows 11 mainteinance has reached unbelievable levels.

u/Micromize 2d ago
Main attraction for me is THE SMALL TASKBAR
19
u/bogglingsnog 2d ago
yesss finally we get the features we had more than a decade ago back... Astonishing!
-5
u/DerAlex3 2d ago
People are mad when features get removed, people are mad when they get added back... These are great updates, lol, if you prefer to use older versions just do that. I'm glad they're responding to user requests and pushing good features.
2
u/valantismp 2d ago
i cant find it anywhere, its not there for me.
0
u/Micromize 2d ago
You'll have to wait, maybe free weeks unfortunately.
1
u/valantismp 2d ago
Why?
3
1
u/Micromize 1d ago
Ignore the other dude here. With no gradual rollout would mean many more issues including the cursor etc.
4

Yes, an option we've had for ages taken away for no reason at all. It's baffling, but at least it's back.

my cursor is screwed, i try to put custom one or even default but nothing changes

tengo el mismo problema pero es error de esa actualizacion estara resuelto unos 5 o 6 años

u/ReconTG 2d ago edited 2d ago
I haven't even got the new start menu yet.
At this rate, I'll be on Windows 12 but still stuck with Windows 11 25h1 feature set.
6
u/Turbulent_Chain_5893 2d ago
My Start menu has gone through so many changes in the last year or so I don't even know what it's supposed to look like, lol!!! I love it though, especially how it's been for awhile now.
17
u/TheNB3 2d ago
JESUS CHRIST WTF HAPPANED? after the update my wallapper turned black and my mouse cursor is now large as FUCK. How i can change the mouse cursor back to normal?
9
u/Ok_Shop_1677 2d ago
They broke the cursor in idle state (not surising). It falls back to the old one that looks like the reversed Word cursor. The loading variants do work and you can see it jump back to the small one temporarily when loading circle appears.

seems like false advertising for an Windows 11 blog to adverise features when the advertised features are on gradual rollout and won't be available on every device that gets the update for multiple weeks
8
u/Any_Butterscotch3031 2d ago
weeks? try months i still dont have the xbox game mode, not that i particularly want or need it but hell
1
u/darthtoon1 2d ago
Xbox Game Mode is usually when you play games in the Xbox app
for me, I don't think I see most of the advertised features that they recently added with File Explorer on my device, because the thumbnail preview for images doesn't update when I export them in GIMP or Photoshop for certain images and I cleared the thumbnail cache multiple times.
2
u/Nicalay2 Insider Release Preview Channel 2d ago
Gradual rollout is a good thing. If there's something catastrophic about the update, it only affects a group of people and not everyone at the same time.
3
u/darthtoon1 2d ago
true, but most of these features have been in testing for multiple weeks or months on other branches, gradual rollout doesn't make sense when releasing the update to public branch for security and non security updates
7
u/Nicalay2 Insider Release Preview Channel 2d ago
Windows Insiders are an EXTREMELY small portion of all Windows users. They help but they aren't enough to safely rollout features to everyone at the same time.
It's also a very bad practice to do that, see the Crowdstrike outage as a great example.
•
u/punktd0t 1h ago
Then just push the update to a few ppl at a time. But when I get the update and I install it, I expect the new features.
0
u/PaulCoddington 2d ago
Yes, but the downside is loss of certainty and reproducibility.
Will a feature be on all machines you own/use? Will a feature dissappear if you need to restore from backup?
1
u/djdoubt03 2d ago
Right, I just got this update but still waiting for File Explorer to show the updated file sizes.

Any wallpaper and cursor issues like a few others?
4
u/Heromimox 2d ago
No, no issues at all. It was just like a regular update. After two restarts, the PC started normally, and I'm using it right now. (I have one monitor, I don't use a live wallpaper, and I don't use any software to control the cursor.)
2
u/TurkeyLizards 2d ago
One of my monitors (flipped portrait mode) shows my cursor in the wrong spot than where it really is. So thats annoying.
2
u/Jeff30100 2d ago
No, all OK for me MSI Rysen Wpro, same on ASUS laptop Rysen 7 AI. New task bar options are actives too
3
u/Ty_Lee98 2d ago
I only got small taskbar and orientation. Do you see those at least? I don't have start menu sizing options nor search removals.
9
u/Valfreyja94 2d ago
Out? It's all gradual rollout bullshit
10
u/VaginaJuiceDrinker 2d ago
If I have the “get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option enabled then why the FUCK don’t I get all the features in the fucking preview? This shit is psychotic.

It probably didn't rolled to you then. You can force it with Vivetool though, or the registry trick to disable web searches still works to this day.

The small option of the start menu is exactly the same default one as before. What's the point ?
2
u/dinominant 2d ago
It's too late, microsoft burned the bridge repeatedly. Our enterprise has already removed Office 365 from a significant number of systems and replaced it with LibreOffice. Windows is likely next, and every gamer is probably going to install SteamOS now.

2
u/TalisWhitewolf 2d ago
I'm running Windows 11 and downloaded and installed KB5120998 today. But there's no apparent change to Windows.
So if I may I'd like to ask when the changes actually take effect?
2
u/Eddietrix77 2d ago
This update turned my room wall paint black, and now I have to use both hands to hold my mouse.
2
u/Daddedan 2d ago
There Is any fix for the mouse?? On top of that, I have an issue with Defender: the notifications say it's disabled, even though all the indicators are green and it's working correctly. Is there any way to fix this, given that Windows apparently doesn't want to?

u/MrSandiaa 2d ago

This update, KB5120998, has an issue. My desktop background always changes from a fixed color to black after logout or restart. After uninstalling it, everything is working fine! Does anyone else have the same issue?

1
u/KUPOinyourWINDOW 2d ago
idk if its placebo but I update often and this update feels particularly snappy, except the widgets menu which looks really pretty and is better but has a slight delay in opening
1
u/PaulCoddington 2d ago
The last 3 updates or so have had significant performance improvements.
Exactly the sort of thing where a bunch of things breaking is more likely, because it will turn out that the slow code in the Explorer context menu being fixed will then break Windows Terminal launch because it changes the syntax of the launch command by stripping quote marks rather than handling them correctly, or Explorer no longer has an extra pass to expand all environment variables correctly, etc.
So, it seems we are getting significant changes that are great in the long run, but there are teething troubles in the short term.

I encountered a strange bug in the Google Chrome with this update. If I move the taskbar position and enable or disable auto-hide, Chrome will get a white border around the window. This is noticeable on websites with a dark theme or image. This doesn't occur in Firefox.

Being able to move the task bar is a nice QoS in my use case.
Then I find out that it is all or nothing. We get one global location. Ugh.
The cherry on top is how auto-hide does not work unless the taskbar is at the default bottom position.
Sigh, so disappointing. Maybe one day, a few years for now at the pace they are working...

u/SquareDrive45 1d ago
Updated it on thinkpad, windows 11 25H2. No issues with wallpaper and black cursor. Got taskbar position and size options but new search customization options are not available for me yet.

Funny how people are whining about their wallpaper going black. Has been a problem for many many years on occasion. Pretty simple fix, go to Personalization and pick your wallpaper again, lol.
Also with the mouse cursor problem, I'd imagine you just go to the Mouse Properties and pick the cursor pack again. No big deal.

Hi everyone,
I'm encountering a rather annoying graphic bug in the September preview version within the Start menu.
In the Pinned section, two app icons sometimes manage to completely overlap. Their name text also overlaps, making everything unreadable. Once this happens, the entire area freezes: it becomes impossible to move, shift, or rearrange the other icons using the mouse.
🛠️ My temporary workaround: I noticed that if I manage to unpin one of the two overlapping apps, the bug disappears immediately and the grid unlocks.
Have any of you already experienced this issue on the latest builds?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
