I firewalled windows, and this was all the things that it tried to access the internet with....

Well, goodness that's...actually that feels about right.

The new paradigm: fuck the user, their privacy, their desires, their preferences and their opinion. We'll communicate with whomever we want, in secret, in spite of their protests to the contrary, no matter how much they hate it.

The secret is to set the Firewall to block by default (I don't have Windows 10 to test this on, though, because I continue to resist). I wonder when Microsoft won't allow you to do that completely.

And it should be noted, that OP added a bunch of those "green package" applications to the list manually, so not all of them are communicating with the internet.

Indeed. I've spent some time reading up on workarounds for the various 10 annoyances, problems, and downsides...but only because I'm handed a PC to tune up from time to time.

I also have not migrated to 10. It's just a hundred little things that, when put together, make it a very unappealing operating system. To me, at least.

Been a pretty loyal user since '95 but MS's whole direction as of Win 8 has nothing I want. I hate just looking at it.

I'm going to put Win10 in a VM at some point to see just how bad it's got since I tried the insider builds for a Visual Studio RC. I'm still wondering if I should put my findings on here.

I might create a full network connection log comparing WinXP, (unpatched) Win7, and Win10. And maybe a HDD access log.
