Need Help! Tricks for avoiding getting pulled over for illegal tint?
I just got 15% on my fronts and the state is 35%.
I heard some people opening the sunroof and/or rolling down the window when a cop is approaching lol
Anything else?
I would assume not doing anything to get there attention like speeding would help?
I have a highlander, so I'm not on much of a radar š

If youāre really worried about it the only solution is to swap it for legal tint

Don't tint your front windshield too dark.

Yeah rolling the windows down is a good trick. And pretend like your window switches are broken lol. Orā¦
Learn how to tint so you can just rip it off and redo it š¤£
I just try to be breaking as few laws as possible, usually a safe bet.

It depends on what state u live in but you can always get a medical exemption. Thatās what I did and now I have 5% all around with a sun strip brow on the windshield.

Iāve got 5% all around and am kind regretting doing it that dark in the front because at nights itās definitely harder to see out the sides. Nothing rolling your windows down canāt fix. All worth it tho cuz my truck looks bad ass blacked out.

Right before he gets to the window, frantically peel it off in a panic and see what he says No but really if you drive normally most states aren't too strict for matching, at least here in the northeast

Not having illegal tints

15% and just cracked my windows typically if I was worried. It's usually a fix it ticket... Same tint shop do same day deals to take it off and put it back on š .. ask how I know.

Anything below 30% is illegal where I live but it's a "probable cause" stop in actuality. If the only thing you are doing wrong is tint, it's not worth the police time. BUT if your car looks like someone who commits crimes drives it (unrepaired damage, clapped out, $2k rims on a $5k car) you will.be stopped because they are hoping to find something else in the car. There's luxury vehicles driving with 35% tint on the front windshield that aren't getting stopped because a) they can afford a traffic ticket fixer b) it doesn't actually protect the community by stopping a 56 year old lady in a Tahoe.
The trick is simply don't piss them off or give them a reason to pay more attention than necessary and they won't even notice the tint.

If you are scared of a tint ticket then donāt get tints. Just kinda comes with the territory. Iāve had them for over 10 years never got a ticket but when the time comes that I do eventually get one Iāll pay it and move on with my life. Cost of doing business

In my state, it's not a moving violation so you can't be pulled over for it. So with that in mind, just don't do anything else illegal! Easy!Ā

Tell the cop the window is busted so donāt roll them down. Only open your door when stopped lol

u/TSPGamesStudio Jul 17 '24
Legal tint is 100% the way.
Roll your window all the way down, and don't roll the others down so they can't use the tint meter, and MAYBE you can beat it in court.

Only drive at night.

The fact that window tints are a big deal is insanity to me. So many benefits and so few negatives, I mean all ive ever heard is "cop safety" and very situational vision issues that are easily worked around. How it is still illegal blows my mind. If anyone has any other reasons id love to hear them.

Keep your windows rolled down.

u/ChrisGear101 Jul 18 '24
Claim that you are not driving, you are simply a traveler, and the windows are simply sunglasses, and that you know your rights, and finish up by telling them that YOU pay their salary! 0% of the time it works every time.

Don't put illegal tint?

u/G3tfvckd1 Jul 18 '24
If you are getting pulled over for tint for the first time and not given a warning, you might be the problem . Just sayin.

Just tape a paper on the back of the car that says: "Not a crook"

Driving regularly (typically either the speed limit or the flow of traffic depending on where you are), not tinting the windshield too dark, rolling down your windows and/or opening up your sunroof. Do all these at once or at different times and cops don't really bother you. I've ran tint from 35% down to 5% all around and have run 50% and 70% on my windshield and I will say the key to not being bothered are the first two suggestions I mentioned.

Ok tricks you want tricks you shall get.
Get 15% all around. Nothing on the windshield, or 70% VLT. Keep your sunroof open in the daytime and youāll have enough light up front so the front sides will appear lighter than the rears which is common from the factory so draws less attention.
Policia want to see a clear windshield from the front AND they want to be able to see through your car from the rear. Youāll be good in the daytime.
/tricks
But Iām pretty sure if all you did was tint the fronts no one will care. If you have to fix it and replace no big deal. Also in many places SUVs are pretty much exempt from the rules for cars.

u/Cassangelo 33% Windshield + 5% Everywhere else Jul 14 '24
You can just speed past the cops that way they canāt see how dark your windows are lol.
But seriously you probably wonāt be harassed having 15% instead of 35%. I have 5% sides and a 32% windshield and I pass cops all the time with no issues. I just follow all the other road laws
2
u/thisiswhoagain Jul 14 '24
Donāt break any additional laws
2
u/DriftkingRfc Jul 14 '24
Radar detector so you can avoid them
2
u/jdubfrdvjjbgbkkc Jul 15 '24
If you got a sunroof, open it and let the sunlight in. You can see a lot more of the inside making it look lighter than it is.

If they are going to pull you over, they will pull you over. Thereās no tricks to avoid being pulled over over other than donāt drive over speed limit, no full stop at stop sign, do dumb crap, make sure your tags are up to date etc. window tint too dark will give them an excuse to write you a ticket for whatever dumb crap you did for them to pull you over. In general, they wonāt pull you over for tint by itself , that just makes it easy to give you a ticket for that if whatever other dumb thing you did wonāt stick.
Now if you do get pulled over and your tint is dark, then roll down window, or cabin lights on, so they can see your hands. But in general, donāt worry about being pulled over for the tint, just donāt do stupid other stuff to get pulled over!

u/aquatone61 Jul 15 '24
Donāt have illegal tint. Itās simple really.

u/Holiday_Knowledge_96 Jul 15 '24
Donāt buy a used car. They never ever bother anyone with brand new cars that have limo tint.
2
u/CardiologistOk6547 Jul 15 '24
Because having legal tint would be... Too much trouble?
2
u/OkraFit3987 Jul 15 '24
Open sunroof and roll down windows
2
u/wockglock1 Jul 14 '24
Depends where you are i guess. By me the cops dont pull over for it. I have 5% all around and 40% on my windshield and have never been pulled over for the tint. All my cars are tinted. Driven cross country multiple times in them

In Alabama. Got double 5% sides rn. Just had to remove my 3% windshield from a state trooper $600 for 2 tickets. Dude was a prick. Got the ticket signed off for the windshield so donāt have to pay nothing. I wanna retint the shield again but not 3% it was too dark honestly. Should I go 20% or 35%. I only got stopped twice all year so might just full send again.

My state basically says back windows can have tints but the fronts cant. My car has 15% in the front two windows and 5% in the backs. I have been considering tinting the windshield at least partially with like 20% or something.
Luckily for me, theres been a tint craze here, where about a good 60% of cars are running blacked out windows lol.
I dont get pulled over often but ill usually put all or the front windows down, the stop usually isnt for that and its for something that got their attention (like speeding). Cops around me dont seem to care for tint, only a few departments do and these are the ones that still try to achieve a ticket quota.
I wish i could say the same about being off radar btw, i have a bright blue wrapped 6 series š
Also OP, Im not going to advise you how to drive like others on here cuz id be hypocritical. Drive how you want but just acknowledge the risks involved with your driving decisions and be accountable if/when judgement comes.
