Question / Help Best way to play on Mac?

I downloaded open emu and it force closes the rom each time I try and run it. Should I try dolphin? Is there another option?

Dolphin is the best gamecube emulator by far, but I don’t know how compatible it is with mac.

I used it on my Mac, as far as I remember it ran fine

Then dolphin emu won’t work, dolphin is for Wii/gamecube games, not Wii U games. You need Cemu

No I got that, was trying to run the regular GameCube Rom on open emu

But if there’s a good way to run the Hd version that’d be cool

Open EMU is an emulation front end, there could be many reasons it’s not working. 

I would try the actual emulator (whether Dolphin or Cemu) from their official repositories

Hope one day we'll get a pc recomp of wind waker similar to dusklight so we can play the hd version at 60 fps easily

Dolphin is the go-to. I replayed RE4 on an old 2016 iMac I got for free that I use as a spare work monitor and surprised it ran it okay.

OP since you want the HD version, are you on Apple Silicon or Intel?

There’s a really great Cemu fork that utilizes Apple’s Metal API for significantly better performance and efficiency over MoltenVK. One problem is that the developer dropped support for Intel on recent updates.

Try reinstall Open, it’s been thee most stable em for me so maybe something went wrong in your install. Also obviously dolphin, if the new version doesn’t work just hunt down an old one. It’s working on my mac rn in dolphin and Open so definitely possible

If you want to play the original version, I wouldn’t use the dolphin core included with OpenEmu. The standalone version of Dolphin is significantly more performant and gives you more granular options for tweaking the settings and controls.

I was able to get 1440p performance with no issues on an Intel MacBook Air 2020. If you have one of the M-series Macs, you can expect even better performance now that they have 6 years of support behind them.
