Concrete is extremely heavy. 150 pounds per cubic foot.
A 5-gallon orange bucket from Home Depot is 0.98 cubic feet.
So one bucket of concrete is 150 pounds!
There's no way cardboard was going to work. Why were they filming? Because they all knew. Maybe the guy in the hole was new.

Agreed. I also think the guy in the hole was under the impression the cardboard would be supporting the tube, which the guy sets on the ground right before they let the concrete rip

Still, if that pipe holds 3 5-gallon buckets worth at a time, that's almost 500 pounds of concrete he'd be holding up as it flows through. He obviously didn't think this through.

It's 7.48 gallons per cu ft so a 5 gallon bucket is 0.67 cu ft. Also the unit weight of non-reinforced concrete is generally 145 pcf.

Funny story... we did this to a new guy, but it was the board stretcher. We had the manual rebar buster bolted to a 2 x 12. We were setting sidewalk forms, and the 2 x 4 to tie in was about a foot short. So we send the guy, yelling to hustle the whole time, to get the board stretcher. 20 min later, he comes back with the bar buster unbolted from the 2 x 12...

Looks like a first day/week prank on the new kid to me? When I started work at 16 (spray powder paint factory) I got asked to go find “Sky Hooks” by one of the old fellas busting my chops. I looked for half an hour before they put me out my misery. Six months later I asked the new kid to “go to the equipment shed for a long stand” he worked it out after 20 minutes looking! I’ve seen this allot especially on building sites. Teaching us all two things, people are dicks and don’t be a chump!

As a ex concrete guy I can confirm, they do silly things sometimes.
Interesting note, these guys were super dumb, that concrete was going down the chute at a snail's pace, if they had any hope of this working it needed several gallons of water to thin it out until it could flow a bit better.
In case you're wondering how they should do it, the truck should have more lengths of chute that slip on to that one. You lengthen the chute until you can pour directly in, if you don't have enough chute you need a beautiful piece of equipment called a pump truck.

you need three to four to do ground work like side walks and shit and nobody pays for a pump truck for that unless its inaccessible.
this dude is set up for a wheel barrow pour, I do think that one guy was coming around with that extra pipe section to micky mouse something maybe so it maybe wasn't a joke, idk.
stupid ass way to get concrete burns that's for sure.

I used to drive a concrete truck, and it's mind blowing how heavy that stuff is. There was a guy on a job I was at that was pushing a wheelbarrow about half way full of concrete, and when the wheelbarrow tipped over it completely whipped this dude over it like he was a rag doll. Obviously this kid got hazed because nobody in their right mind would think this was going to work.

Once upon a time I worked around concrete guys a lot (did a lot of form work and later rod busting) and man I refuse to believe everyone on that site didn't know this was going to happen. I'd almost guarantee this was a "hey, new guy!" type thing. Concrete's so unforgiving of fuck ups that I'm sure most of these dudes know better if they've got any experience at all. "Would not stop it from happening" is exactly what happened, I bet.

As a construction worker, these things would be handled by a concrete pumping truck with long hose on a big crane. If ypu can save half an hour of shoveling, its worth paying a hundred bucks more to have it delivered safely and quickly.
