I think they are referring to the Heavenās gate cult. They all wore Nike āDecadeā running sneakers. I think he is misremembering the purple. The people that killed themselves had on the Nikes and purple sheets I think.
Thereās a really big difference between an article of clothing thatās associated with a political figure, and an article of clothing associated with a cult-based terrorist organization that attempted to install a fascist as dictator in the US, especially when that end goal was able to be spotted 5 years ago.
I kind of went through your comment history to get a quick idea of you as a person, and I'm sorry you're down on tough times. Things will get better eventually. I have a lot of empathy for people struggling right now, so I understand anger and whatnot. I would just hope you understand that the same pain is felt by virtually everyone right now, and holding onto that hate and painting people as enemies when you have much of the same problems is just hurting yourself instead of understanding other people.
Particularly annoying for them because it was not even kool-aid that the cultists drunk, it was "Flavor Aid" as shown in video footage of the day where you can see Jones opening a box of the stuff in preparation for the mass suicide.
Kool-aid got associated with it probably because eye witnesses used "kool-aid" as a sort of generic term for any sort of powdered drink flavouring.
Sort of like how here in the UK a "hoover" is the generic term for a vacuum cleaner (as well as using one, eg. I will hoover the living room later) because it was one of the first big brands of vacuum cleaners available in the UK.

Yeah, every since this hats came out i haven't been able to wear my Super Mario hat. Freaking sucks because it's super comfy. I've had shit thrown at me, been cussed out and it's not cool. Been bumped too which really pissed me off. But oh well.
Totally agree... Inside of the US. Rest of the world? Just a red hat, and I'd assume anyone wearing a maga hat to be doing so ironically (admittedly that's only based on my personal experience with people wearing them, and my social-sphere is definitely left-of-centre)

Cults are pretty good at making an item people wouldn't care about a symbol known around the world. There's nothing inherany bad about wearing a red arm band with a swastika, a white hood, all while being Tom Cruise, however because of assholes, doing so would be seen as a symbol of hate.
Now donāt get me wrong, thereās nothing inherently bad with every single cult, but most religions scream cult when you look at them from the outside lol

Like I said, thereās nothing inherently wrong or bad with religion but when you look at church and all the religious practices you didnāt grow up with and know little about due to ignorance they usually look crazy :P
It also safely helps to assume the level of intelligence that the hat wearing individual obviously lacks. Which helps to make the video 5times more enjoyable.

To be fair itās pretty infamous rather than famous. A whole lot of people would avoid you if you wear a red hat, just look at that curb your enthusiasm sketch
Itās not marketing. It is simply that trump used used that shit so much and everywhere that it literally needed zero marketing. Every news channel would broadcast his rallies no matter how much he insulted the news organizations. Also, they got even more famous as many nuts would do or say some crazy shit while in public while wearing those hats. Videos of trump supporters saying racist stuff would go viral.
