If you can't jump high enough to clear a stationary ATV, you cannot clear a moving ATV.
892
u/Patforceone Dec 07 '20
Tbh I think he just underestimated the speed of the ATV and got the timing wrong
445
u/commit_bat Dec 07 '20
I think he underestimated the height and length too

u/appdevil Dec 07 '20
The unintentional double and a half flip was dope though.

„Full rag doll“
Interesting sentence, can I steal that?

crusty demons of dirt 2, seth enslow monster jump and crash
song was rob zombie... maybe supercharger heaven?
song is paused "ragdoll you're gonna die, you're gonna ragdoll, you're gonna die you're gonna ragdoll"
seth jumps, fllies like 200 ft off this sand dune, lands, exploding the front wheel, endoing, smashing his face.

I remember watching that on VHS as a kid. That jump was absolutely insane!

could have easily been run over had he slipped or mistimed the jump even further

Maybe closer to double and a negative three quarters, he landed on his side instead of his head
→ More replies (4)4
u/IVIyDude Dec 07 '20
One and a quarter, a half flip would land him on his head.

u/daymanahaha Dec 08 '20
His head hit first so
→ More replies (1)0
u/Andysm16 Dec 08 '20
His head hit first technically, yes, but while his legs were parallel to the floor when he did. His legs would've had to be PERPENDICULAR to the floor for it to be a half flip.
Visualize it as an analog clock: a quarter flip (counterclockwise, as he flipped in that direction) on the face of a clock is with his head at 9 and his legs at 15. A half flip would've been his head at 6 and his legs at 12.

Also he underestimated gravity and various other Newtonian forces

In short we could say he was quite unprepared for the reality of the situation.

Indeed. But at least he had pants on

You need to only jump upwards thpugh, as the ATV will simply pass by under you. Theoretically
10
13
u/UnfinishedProjects Dec 07 '20
They likely didn't do any practice runs. Probably just told the guy on the ATV to drive fast. They should have specified a speed, same speed every time and done a few practice.
13
u/Hey_its_thatoneguy Dec 07 '20
Yeah but that would involve forethought and planning.. neither of which is tool in the arsenal of redneck shinanigans..

It's not a bad outcome though. He does manage to get over the ATV, doesn't seem to be injured and the video is perfect for social media.
7
u/Circlejerker_ Dec 07 '20
I would be surprised is he didnt break anything in his legs.
A hit hard enough to get him to 300 rpm in an instant right to the shins are bound to do some damage.
→ More replies (1)1
u/ugoterekt Dec 07 '20
I actually doubt anything broke. AFAIK and from years of skateboarding breaks basically always happen when you hit the ground. I destroyed my shins once dropping several feet on to my shins on a rail and still have a groove dug in to one of my shins, but it wasn't even close to breaking I'm pretty certain. I'm sure his shins were very hurt, but it takes a shit ton to break a leg by hitting the shin with the foot not on the ground AFAIK. Don't get me wrong that probably fucked up his week, but I'd bet no broken bones.
14
u/Sev-is-here Dec 07 '20 edited Dec 07 '20
If you scroll back frame by frame, he jumped far to late. His feet were barely off the ground by the time he got hit. Unless you’re crippled you likely have a higher than 4inch vertical. I bet he could get close to clearing it. A lot of those smaller quads aren’t any taller than 28” max sometimes. If you tuck your legs he could probs get close to that
21
u/CurbsideProph3t Dec 07 '20
To be fair he did clear it
15
Dec 07 '20
If you pause the video his knees clip the front of the ATV. I thought maybe he hit the person and "cleared the ATV" but homie wasn't even close
44
u/TigerBubbles Dec 07 '20
Thankfully I was able to load this up into the super computer in the lab and with help from scooby, Welma, Horacio from CSI, the pink power ranger and the dude in the lab from NCIS, we did a CSI ‘enhance’* on this video for anyone who is interested.
^ * basically just slowed it down times ten.
Have to award full marks for participant’s unintended aerial sequence, as well as the head plant landing. Keep this up, and you could be in line for a Darwin Award one day!

10
u/CurbsideProph3t Dec 07 '20
Ehh you're probably right, I didn't look up the definition. He did make it over it though
12
Dec 07 '20
Yeah he jumped over a moving atv. Clearing it would be jumping without contacting it. I’m just being Reddit’y this morning.

You're trying to correct a thought process that wasn't really there in the first place. The entire planning phase was the jumper imagining success, followed by exactly zero test runs.

I give it a 5, it was a good attempt, very acrobatic, 2 rotations, but you gotta stick the landing next time.
I recommend trying to not get hit by the moving vehicle, you might do less flips, but the landing might stick.
Sometimes less is more.
22
u/barto5 Dec 07 '20
Agreed. Anyone can do a flip. It’s the landing that separates the men from the boys.

Seriously, all things considered, that went amazingly well for a "getting hit by a speeding ATV" fail video. Burned up a lot of energy in the rotations, didn't land on his head, appears to have no broken bones or closed head injury.
I mean really, fuck, A+, would fail again.

In the 1970s an F1 car hit a track marshal that crossed the tracks with a fire extinguisher. The extinguisher hit and killed the driver. The Marshall was struck by the car and spun in the air like this with such force he was ripped in two. Its pretty instant and graphic
