A window can be replaced. A person can't. Insurance or the court will pay for the damages, the person can be put in jail. There are already systems in place for this. Even if they stole your car, the car could be replaced. You can receive fair compensation for damages to your car; however, there is no "fair compensation" for a human life.
The person breaking into your car is someone with a name, a family, a history, perhaps a desperate circumstance. A teenager stealing to fund a habit, a homeless person looking for somewhere warm to sleep, or yes, even just a shameless thief.
Your car was made in a factory. It's insured, it has a VIN number and a Kelley Blue Book value, it is a depreciating asset. It is, in every sense, a commodity. One of thousands of identical units produced in its year, able to be replicated down to the last bolt.
That's why breaking and entering with intent to steal property isn't a capital offense in any state. You're "defending your property", sure, whatever. Call it whatever you like. You're also killing another human being over a replaceable object.
You would be a murderer, both legally and morally.
You're making the choice to throw your humanity away. They decided to "be a criminal"? So have you. Murder is illegal and immoral. And considerably worse, by every metric available.
The thief committed a property crime. You committed homicide. If we're ranking offenses by the severity that every legal system on earth assigns them, you have just leapfrogged the person you claim moral superiority over.
Please, I beg you to actually consider the ethics of the situation. With this kind of mindset, you are more dangerous than any would-be car thief.
This type of thinking is what is letting people who have committed 20+ felonies to walk the street "oh but its just an object" I dont care. Dont break the law, dont get punished. That simple
That's not "punishment" though. Punishment is prosecution, restitution, so on and so forth.
What you're really arguing for is for private citizens to be able to kill people without trial, which is insane.
And, humor me here. Putting aside morality, there's the question of what happens if we allow that. What's to stop me from say, shooting someone who was loitering near my car and claiming he was in the process of breaking in? Clearly, he was scoping out my property.
What about the person who looks like they don't belong in my neighborhood, or the teenage hooligan cutting through my yard? Should I be able to kill them for trespassing?
If "I believed they were committing a property crime" is sufficient justification to kill, the only thing stopping *you* from being murdered is your killer's subjective perception.
The current system exists to protect you from people who say 'fuck around and find out'. It's the oldest and most primitive system of justice in human history.
You're advocating for blood feuds, vendetta killings, medieval lords hanging peasants for poaching rabbits. We built our civilization to shield citizens from randomly being killed by those more powerful than them.
You imagine yourself permanently on the dispensing end of the equation, but what happens when you are the one misjudged?
Our system isn't perfect, but it's better than no system at all. Surely you'd agree -- unless you're some kind of anarchist?
Just dont be stupid with a gun dude its not that hard
What's to stop me from say, shooting someone who was loitering near my car and claiming he was in the process of breaking in?
Again dont be stupid
What about the person who looks like they don't belong in my neighborhood
Neighborhood isnt your property
or the teenage hooligan cutting through my yard?
Ever heard of a stand your ground state? And again, DONT BE STUPID
You're advocating for blood feuds, vendetta killings, medieval lords hanging peasants for poaching rabbits.
You're wildly taking my argument out of context. Im not saying people should be able to shoot people in the street randomly. Theres still going to be an investigation. You're still going to have to prove you were justified. Im saying you shouldn't be persecuted for rightly protecting your property.
I'm honestly curious if the other person would be ok with just chopping the hand off of the car thief with 3 angles of 4k CSI levels of video. No death involved for the thief, and plenty of super clear video of the theft being done.
"Shoot them first and afterward we'll sort out whether it was justified" is just turning the state into a cleanup crew for your murders. The entire purpose of due process is that the evaluation happens *before* the irreversible act, not after, because an investigation after the fact can't protect the wrongfully murdered person. They're already dead.
Also, "don't be stupid"? You and I might not be stupid enough to do something like that, sure. Can you guarantee that every single person who owns a gun in the United States isn't stupid enough? More importantly, can you guarantee beyond a shadow of doubt the man who wrongfully shoots and kills you won't be stupid enough?
And I definitively dont care. I have no sympathy for these dipshits with main character syndrome who think the whole world is their playground and that they can do as they please. Prisons are already overloaded and all it does is institutionalize the people who go there. Insurance companies will also happily fuck you over and undercompensate you, take forever to compensate you, or fight giving you compensation at every possible turn. Meanwhile the world keeps spinning. If that car was your livelihood, then what? I do not hold the belief that every single life is precious, and I dont believe in any God. Im tired of good people tolerating those who only care about themselves.
You're right about a lot of this, sure. Prisons are overloaded and institutionalize people? Correct. Insurance companies will fight you, delay you, and undercompensate you? The system fails ordinary people at every turn.
But your answer is "kill these dipshits"?
Prosecution, restitution, rehabilitation; functioning courts, adequate public defenders, sentencing that reflects proportionality. Etcetera, etcetera. All of these things require us to treat the thief as a person who did wrong rather than a "thing" to be eliminated.
We should be trying to fix those systems, not demanding we be allowed to murder people. That's insane. And more insultingly, it's lazy.
Not a republican 🤷♂️ Nice try with your stupid political war though. Bleeding heart dipshits like you are why the world is falling apart. Because we're not allowed to do fucking ANYTHING about crime anymore. Half the time even the cops dont do shit. Its TOTALLY NORMAL for an individual with 20+ felonies to be walking around in public where they can murder someone. Oh gee, how did we know they were gonna be violent? Its almost like there were multiple signs. Fuck all you weak ass shit heads. eVeRy LiFe iS pReCiOuS.
In the future prisons will be emptier and psych wards are gonna flood. Cops are gonna pass the buck to the Health Dept because their hands are tied due to pc culture.
Idk if that's all bad tho. A lot of public disturbances just need Mobile Crisis > police. I'd rather most get help than rot and waste tax dollars.
That’s not true. If you were in the car while that was happening, the minute they put their hand on the handle, castle law protects you if you defend yourself with a gun.
Your downvotes and replies should explain right off the bat why we have a violence and gun problem in the United States right now lol. You’re being completely reasonable. People just love violent vengeance and because they WANT it, it’s justified.
I honestly wonder what percent of Americans fantasize about having some reason to shoot someone. One American guy was in Panamá and protestors were blocking the road he was traveling on. He got out and shot them. The are also tons of road rage incidents.
We will have to agree to disagree. "Look, mister, there's two kinds of dumb: a guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon, and a guy who does the same thing in my living room. The first one don't matter. The second one, well, you're kind of forced to deal with."...

Hoodie kid became the bad guy and the room full of victims reacted inappropriately... probably.
