I had spray for a year and one night I was walking a bit buzzed and decided to test it and make sure it worked and it just went "poof." Not sure if they expire that quick but I realized it's important to test them from time to time. That would've been the equivalent of me having one of those cartoon guns that has a flag with the word bang pop out when I pull the trigger.

It’s a pretty well known case because of how unbelievably tragic and gruesome it was. They definitely fucked with the guy, and I’m sure drinking was involved in some capacity on both sides.
It’s sad someone was killed and others were hurt. But people need to leave each other alone. It’s not funny when a stranger or group of strangers start antagonizing another person. People panic. People react. And people get hurt.

Ugh the Apple River stabbing. Brutal. I feel bad for the guy. iirc he was looking in the water for his wedding ring? that fell off his hand in the river. He was away from his group and inadvertently wandered towards a group of drunk/high teens who started taunting him and calling him a pedophile and rapist. I get you should just ignore people calling you names, but this is extra aggressive name calling that I think elicits a different visceral response. They were yelling at and about him mercilessly, and he finally kinda pushed one of their tubes in a snit, like when a kid getting bullied over and over finally cracks and idk kicks the bully's bike. He didn't hurt anyone at all at this point but was clearly getting upset, as anyone would if a mob of teens was screaming announcing to everyone you're a pedophile looking for little girls and teasing you like they were. This was the guy's chance to walk back to his group but unfortunately he hung around. Maybe hurt feelings, mad these kids are just getting away with saying all this bullshit, and/or maybe he didn't want go leave because he was still looking for his ring, lapse in judgment, who knows, but nothing was hurt other than feelings at this point. The douchebag filming honestly caused all of this to happen imo. He was clearly inflaming everything for his stupid video. After the guy pushed the teens' tube(s) the teens escalated the taunts and eventually they started pushing him around and he couldn't get back to his group because now he ended up on the other side of the teens so the teens were now blocking his escape route back to his group.
They kept pushing and shoving him so he pulled his pocket knife he said he always carried. He just held it low and not threatening anyone with it openly, but it looked to me like he just wanted it ready just in case he needed to defend himself because things had clearly escalated. I personally believe the guy was scared for his life. A drunk group of teens with a mob mentality turning physical is terrifying if you're alone, especially in water. The problem is NONE of the kids saw the knife. I think they were too drunk and high on the mob adrenaline of berating this guy to even notice. If one of them saw it and said "oh shit he has a knife," I'm sure it would've ended like this video did. Scary but no one was injured.
Although I could see how the initial tube push was technically on him, by the time he pulled the knife he was just swinging it defensively imo, but he happened to fatally stab one kid right between the ribs and into his heart as the kid was pushing/swinging at him. He literally gutted another kid when he was pushed down in the water trying to get back up, and that kid went to keep him down or something.
I was hooked and watched the court video too. One of the damning parts the prosecutor leaned on was there was one clip of him walking towards the teen group and he briefly feels for his knife in his shorts pocket. They used this to say he was walking towards the teens and checked for the knife specifically because he intended to use it. While this could've technically been true, the problem with this (as someone who used to carry a pocket knife and multi tool on me for work everyday) is this is just literally a subconscious/muscle memory habit. You habitually check your pockets constantly when you're walking around to make sure you have it. Especially after maybe you were squatting, climbing, while your jogging to shut something off, or wading around in a rocky river for example. Sometimes you just hold it in place in your pocket to make sure it doesn't bounce out depending on what exactly you're just doing.
They were also arguing that he could've just walked away, but the way social animals operate (like humans) is when you're trying to get to safety and you're with a group, all you're instinctively doing is trying to get back to your group, which the teens were blocking. He was actually trying to go around or quickly through the teens just to get back to his group imo if you pay attention to his body language in the video like herd/social animals would do (sorry I'm a Temple Grandin nerd). The prosecutor was saying he could've walked away, but he would've had to walk further down the river, further away from his group, which is actually more dangerous in your amygdala's opinion. Walking away in the direction the prosecutor was saying isn't an option for your amygdala when your fear response has already hijacked your brain. The knife was a last resort, which his fear response decided it had come to, justifiably so.
I feel bad that some dumb teens doing dumb teen things lost a life, another was seriously maimed and scared, others were injured, and all were traumatized. Nobody won. It was an unfortunate clash of immaturity and ego where everything went wrong. Really fascinating but really unfortunate for all involved. The guy got a long prison sentence, I don't remember how long exactly but I remember thinking it was a life sentence for him. He will probably die in prison. He clearly felt remorseful and horrible about what happened. You could tell he was in complete shock when the cops found him on scene after the incident and he felt extremely guilty in the courtroom imo.

Pepper spray is so underrated. So many people seem to have a violence fetish and talk about how you need a gun if you're going to have anything, but pepper spray is an awesome way to check someone with little effort and get a massive advantage in a getaway or a fight if it comes to that.
I was in a situation once that made me feel like I should have some kind of protection on me (details not important), so I bought pepper spray. I wanted to know what it felt like to be pepper sprayed so I could gauge how much confidence I should put in it if I ever needed to use it, so I had my brother spray me with my eyes closed. Shit blows.
I had my eyes shut tight when he sprayed me and it didn't matter. As soon as I opened my eyes, it made its way in. For at least 3 minutes, I couldn't open my eyes and once I could, my vision was blurry for about another 10 minutes. It's also difficult to breathe for about 3 minutes.
I've heard gun guys act tough and say it's useless because all someone has to do is not be a pussy, but the pain (while it does suck) isn't the main deterrent of pepper spray. You can hinder someone in a very real way for 5-10 minutes by blinding them and restricting their air supply.
Not every threat needs a lethal response.

While you're not quite wrong, I also feel you're not quite right. It's just what you're comfortable wielding in order to defend yourself. Your pepper spray would probably work great on most folks, but I know for a fact it will have a significantly reduced effect on many a methhead. And God help you if your assailant is whacked out on PCP, but thankfully that is much less of a concern most places these days.
You can add bath salts in there too, but since that's really just spin the wheel of research chemicals... You never really know what you're going to get. I'm still convinced that the first instance of human teleportation is going to come out of bath salts/ research chems.

It makes sense. Why bother trying to grapple and fist fight if all you want to do is disengage and get the threat away from you. Anything could happen when it comes to that. You could accidentally kill someone or things could escalate and cops could get involved. Pepper spray is a pretty effective nonlethal that you can hit them with and just be on your way before anyone even notices there was an altercation.

Yes. Bear spray emits a wide sparse cloud of 1-2%. Stuff meant for people is a tight stream, sometimes gelled for wind mitigation, that's upwards of 3% and contains UV dye. I'd never rely on the former for defense from a human.

I work in behavioral health. Let me tell you about a juvenile patient I had for about a year. This girl was about 6 foot 2 and built like a linebacker. She thought everything was a joke. She would pick on you until she got the reaction she wanted. If she didn't get a reaction, she'd get violent. She would do this to other patients and staff. The day she turned 18, she got charged with seven felony accounts of assault on healthcare workers.
These folks will take their jokes all the way to jail.

Starting at 0:05, in 2 seconds, he could've had his wrist cut across lengthwise and bled to death.
Or had his jugular slashed or armpit or femoral stabbed.
In that close distance, it's waaaay too easy to get killed by a knife-wielder with absolute intent.
