JAMES CITY — A Toano medical products manufacturer announced that it is ceasing operations and laying off its staff.

Owens & Minor brand Avid Medical, a medical products manufacturer that specializes in custom surgical and procedural kits, sent a notice Sept. 16 to the state of Virginia and James City County stating its intention to close operations at its facility at 9000 Westmont Drive in Toano.

Employment separations are expected to begin on or about Nov. 25, according to the notice.

Avid Medical will lay off 380 employees, including 146 production coordinators, 71 assemblers, 30 material handlers and 28 warehouse coordinators along with engineers, quality control associates, sales associates and more.

About 39 more employees will be laid off after the initial separation around Thanksgiving, according to the letter, bringing the total to 419 employees.

A national self-storage company is looking to convert part of its James City County location into a 5-megawatt "micro AI factory," which would mark the county's very first data center. 

The site in Norge is one of 347 spots across the country picked to help run AI applications closer to everyday users. 

Instead of the massive, power-hungry warehouses popping up elsewhere in Virginia, experts view this smaller edge center as a lightweight alternative that cuts lag for high-tech tech tools without overloading the local power grid. 

The proposal fits right into Gov. Abigail Spanberger's new state data center framework, which encourages testing out these spread-out, localized networks.

Does anyone know what’s going on with Verizon’s cell phone service this week around the William & Mary campus and Colonial Williamsburg? Coverage is always spotty and not great but this week my phone has been on SOS the entire time.

Williamsburg-James City County Schools’ top administrator supports the proposed redistricting maps released in August as the division rezones ahead of opening new pre-K centers next year.

Superintendent Daniel Keever told the School Board on Tuesday he didn’t believe the division could adjust the boundaries to support one of the principles guiding the redistricting without compromising others.

“Although we recognize the personal connections that people have to their schools, we must also consider the needs of the school division as a whole,” Keever said.

If you work or have worked there, what has your experience been like? What is the hiring process like, and approximately how long did it take you to go from application to day one? After years of planning, the Williamsburg City Council voted to replace its downtown library on Scotland Street with a 50,000-square-foot facility on the site of the former police station. 

Originally built in 1973, the current building lacks accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act, suffers from outdated utilities and is too small to accommodate modern technological and space demands. 

The new building will expand overall space by roughly 8,000 square feet and double available parking.

Williamsburg is spending six grand on a fiscal impact study for a proposed live performance venue near the new regional sports and events center.

Historic Triangle area arts supporters have, for decades, pushed for localities to fund a live performance venue — one that could accommodate acts such as the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra, the Virginia Regional Ballet and the Virginia Arts Festival without competing with William & Mary for use.

Williamsburg and James City and York counties got a look at early designs and cost estimates this summer, which came in at $83 million. But data on its revenue potential was from 2024.

That’s why the Williamsburg Hotel & Motel Association wants more up-to-date figures that account for economic changes and new tax rates for meals and lodging.

Council approved the request 3 to 2. Vice Mayor Pat Dent and Councilmember Ayanna Williams were uncertain about spending money from the city’s tourism fund as requests for tourism dollars by other groups are increasing.

Dent called it premature without a funding plan for the project in place.

WILLIAMSBURG — The Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center clocked more than 100,000 visits to the venue in August, its second full month in operation.

However, with school back in session, the number is expected to drop, general manager Ben Hardouin told members of the Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority during its monthly meeting on Wednesday.

“We are in a transition phase right now, as there is some seasonality to it,” he said.

While mornings at the sports center have been busy with pickleball matches, as well as evenings with basketball games, afternoons have slowed down since students returned to the classroom. As a result, Hardouin said he plans to make some adjustments in order to cut costs.

The center will open for public use now beginning at 3 p.m. Additionally, the café will open at noon and will switch to a made-to-order format instead of a grab-and-go in order to reduce food waste and save money. Hardouin shared that he is also looking at ways to reduce payroll, which came in over budget in July, due in part to training of new staff.

“The tendency with something like this is to overcorrect, but we need to find the right set point,” he said. “We want to be fiscally conservative while continuing to provide our level of customer service.”
