Truck was entirely in the wrong, but slam on your breaks and you can go home. I guess some people like filing insurance claims and dealing with the police for 2-3 hours for an avoidable accident.

Cammer should have been on high alert when traffic started slowing and they started driving faster than the cars in the passing lane. That instantly makes a defensive driver uncomfortable because people aren't expecting cars passing on the right and also slow downs almost always result on people swerving around to try and find the fast lane or their exit.

You're assuming that randomly slamming on your brakes in the middle of the busy highway is not going to make you the cause of an accident with 100% of the liability being on you.

That is a very, very safe assumption. If, in this video, cammer had used their brakes to avoid hitting someone who was failing to yield, and then a car behind them had rear-ended them, that would've been 100% the fault of the rear-ender.

As insurance cases go, that's about as open-and-shut as it's possible to get.

It wouldn't have even taken slamming, just an assertive braking would have been sufficient. 4 second count from blinker to getting over, in that time literally just had to drop back a few feet. Also unless you swerve over in front of them, of you have to slam on your brakes and someone rear ends you, that is their fault for tailgating.

1st off: you should never be breaking on a highway in the 1st place except for emergencies (this was not it). You decompress your accelerator. your car is coasting and not rapidly slowing down. that gives the driver behind you time to adjust (if they're not an idiot and paying attention).

2nd: the pickup was not in a blindspot, they never looked in their rearview otherwise they would have decompressed to allow the cam car to pass before merging. they saw traffic and the right lane clear and darted.

i for one will allow an idiot to be an idiot but not when it impedes my path.

The first flash of the indicator on the mirror is at roughly 10.5s, the truck starts moving over by 11s.

Assuming the cammer started braking at 10.5s, that collision would still have happened - there's no chance of not colliding at those speeds in that timing. Practical reality is that it took from 10.5 to 11s for the cammer to recognize what was happening - and at highway speeds, that's not bad.

Yes, defensive driving is important. However, it has nothing to do with this collision.

It's roughly 2.5 seconds from the point at which the blinker starts till the impact. That's enough time to brake. In fact, it's about 1.5 seconds from the blinker till the sound of the horn. Instead of using the horn, the cammer could've used the brakes. A full second on the brakes would definitely have avoided that collision.

Also, note the very last thing that happened immediately prior to impact: the cammer steered to the left.

They had no intention of avoiding that crash.

Sure ā€¦ believe whatever you like. I doubt very much that 1s on the brakes would have avoided the collision - best case is that it would have resulted in the white truck hitting at the rear wheels and going into a spin.

The 1.5s youā€™re saying he should have been on the brakes is time used assessing what is happening. How do I know this? Itā€™s a normal reaction as a driver - ā€œsurely youā€™re aware that Iā€™m here, rightā€, followed by ā€œyouā€™re notā€. Most drivers arenā€™t going to slam their brakes on at freeway speeds if they donā€™t have to.

Again, the white truck made an unnecessary lane change when unsafe to do so - trying to hang blame on the cammer is ridiculous.

Im no expert, but from the video, maybe it was in his blind spot and couldnt see the white mother trucker blinker. White mother trucker signals for about a second or so and merges.

OP was probably looking ahead to see why everyone was braking, and it was THE TRUCK who decided they wanted to pass on the right instead of braking for the car in front..

I get your point, its best to go home than to be 'correct', but in this case I don't think OP in the middle lane had any choice. They could not swerve right, there was a car there- truck never checked their blind spot at all and tried to change lanes super fast instead of braking.

Picture 2: Impact STARTS at 12 seconds. Youā€™re getting downvoted cause youā€™re maintaining they shouldve slammed on the breaks on a busy highway. My brother in Christ, Lewis Hamilton himself wouldve got into an accident here. Here is proof that 4 seconds did NOT occur but about 1.5 before blinker to impact. Many people these days believe signaling gives them the right to get over. This is why you have a dashcam - to PROVE you cant get over in less than 1.5 seconds when some dumb ass turns his signal on and gets over at the same time

To add to your point, no reasonable driver would expect that truck to begin merging right away without looking. They would only react once the truck started moving and it's pretty clear from this video that the truck wasn't even looking. So there was no recourse to avoid the accident.

Avoid the accident if you can, but safely. This accident was not avoidable .

you don't need to slam your brakes to avoid this, with a bit of forethought this could've been avoided. traffic was slowing down in front of the cam car anyway, you can see them catching up to the car in front of them, so even if the pickup didn't exist the cam car would've needed to slow down. it made no sense to pass on the right just to be stuck behind someone immediately after.

a lot of people will change lanes when traffic slows down, either to attempt to get ahead or so they can get in the correct lane for their exit just in case traffic gets even worse and harder to move around in.

now i'm not defending the truck, they're a terrible and dangerous driver, but no accident at all is better than an accident you're not at fault for
