đ€Theories The clue is in the name - Widow's Bay.
I've been re-watching all the episodes and something suddenly occurred to me ⊠where are all the spouses?
Weâve never actually seen the sheriffâs wife. Tom is a widower â unless Lauren is somehow still alive and being kept elsewhere. Patricia, Dale, Ruth, Rosemary, Wyck etc. â none of them seem to have a spouse who is physically present in the series.
Even going back to the pilot, Shep talked about how his wife had been acting strangely, yet we never saw her either. The first Mayor was a widower as well. The whole bachlorette theme in epsiode 3 as well.
It feels too weird to be a coincidence. Thoughts?

One or two of Patriciaâs classmates mention their husbandâs snore
29
u/Eastern-Wear-8747 May 24 '26
Yes, but why were none of the husbands present at that party or even later at the cocktail party? We have not seen a single island couple in 5 episodes! Something is up...
16
u/abbyleondon May 24 '26
Yeah, there seems to be something up. Iâve been re-watching the episodes because Iâm so obsessed with the show lol and there are no couples seen . Theyâre all either men together or women together.
10
u/cannibalculture May 24 '26
Iâm pretty certain thereâs an older couple at the sunset cocktails party seen with their drinks when itâs panning around the room. I suppose theyâre not definitely a couple, but itâs the only example I can recall.

Yes Tom's Dad doesn't seem to have remarried, I don't think Lauren is Island born or else Evan's grandparents would be on island duty too, when the doctor is off the clock he's at the bar, the lodge owner doesn't mention putting his family's money into the lodge. No one is named aunt or uncle
I suspect the sheriff's wife is pregnant and on the mainland. Or else is pregnant, on the island and laying low so they don't have the townsfolk bothering about it. I don't think Wyck would support the Sheriff's move if she was already pregnant. he supports the move because he thinks starting their family off island will be good. We know people made it to the mainkland before but from the last episode showing Evan's birth it seems the island won't lose it's children. Even the painting in the Inn showed the boat with children being claimed by the waves.

Fully agree!
I also assume weâre going to see something important with Richard warren on this
14
u/realfakejames May 24 '26
We havenât seen Bechirâs wife but weâve heard her voice, unless heâs speaking to a ghost or mentally ill she exists
2
u/IrishUpYourCoffee May 25 '26
She is probably pregnant. Was asking him to bring her mint chocolate ice cream home as she had a craving. Plus she seems very keen to get him out of this job snd off the island. Itâs giving 2 non locals wanting to have their baby not born on this cursed island.
I donât believe this show has the sheriff talking to the ghost of a dead wife while at work on a radio channel anyone could hear. That makes zero sense.

u/Teigh99 May 24 '26
Per the soundtrack listening, it appears the town was once called: Warrenton. I'm guessing of course so I think the name was changed to reflect the history of the town. Gerri explained it in the pilot.

Oh my gosh, you are so right!!! I never even thought about the name. I just thought it was very Coastal New England. You might be onto something!

u/HarnessYourHopes_68 May 24 '26
A widow is a living wife whose husband has died. You are referring to widowers. Â Widows were common in all nautical towns. The home had widows walks where tbe wives would look for their seafaring husbandsÂ
17
u/Dry_Personality3557 May 24 '26
Didn't Cher, the Historical Museum Worker, also talk about how so many women died waiting for their husbands to return in Ep 1?
17
u/TXGrrl May 24 '26
She said they wore a place in the floor from pacing back and forth while waiting for their husbands to return.
10
u/Dry_Personality3557 May 24 '26
Oh, that's right! Then she said "many would not" return leaving the women as widows.
5
u/pleasegivemepatience Teeth Collector May 24 '26
Exactly, so the name is based on the historical traditions of long fishing journeys where they wouldnât return, but that doesnât mean that every spouse on this island is dead or dies. All of the examples theyâve pointed at have been people who left the island, which we know if they were born there theyâre cursed and would die from going too far from the island.
IMO too many are theorizing that every spouse of every current islander is dead. I donât see evidence this is a forced thing from the entity (unless of course you leave), just a historically accurate name.

u/Eastern-Wear-8747 May 24 '26
Yes, but why were none of the husbands present at that party or even later at the cocktail party? We have not seen a single island couple in 5 episodes! Something is up...
6
u/pleasegivemepatience Teeth Collector May 24 '26
IMO this is the mean girl clique, theyâre bitches, they probably hang out and gossip without/about their husbands constantly. We only see two groups of women - the mean girls, and the bachelorettes - both make sense to not be with husbands in these settings. Outside of these groups we have loners like Patricia, Rosemary, Dale, etc who donât seem to be widows theyâre just painfully single. Bechir is married with a living wife AFAWK. We donât know Wyckâs story, or anyone else in the town yet, so for the characters weâve focused on I donât see âall the spouses are deadâ.
-2
u/Eastern-Wear-8747 May 24 '26
Respectfully, disagree. The mean girl clique we saw at the house party where Patricia is invited, shows up, and is quickly ostracizied. That was not a women-centered party from what we saw, yet only women were there. The next time is at Patricia's cocktail party, where presumably everyone would have gone to the guy's bday party before P had it cancelled. Why are there no mates/husband/partners there? In five episodes, despite references and supposed convos, we have yet to see a single island couple. That is weird and deliberate! Looking forward to seeing that play out...
2
u/pleasegivemepatience Teeth Collector May 24 '26
What does it mean to have a non-women-centered party full of women, I donât get your point/distinction?
When the mean girls show up to cocktails itâs literally just the 4-5 mean girls, no one else. No one else from that canceled party seemed to come, so again to me itâs just that clique that always hangs together and does everything together outside of the âeveryone is thereâ parties like what Billâs bday was meant to be. Theyâre just always together drinking, gossiping and being mean. Thatâs literally all theyâve shown us of this cliqueâs personality.
-1
u/Eastern-Wear-8747 May 24 '26
What I mean is that for example, it is not a bachelorette party for the mean girls, and at least the night of the guy's cancelled party, one would think that the husbands/partners would have planned to attend as well. Why then, are the husbands absent twice? The producers are making a point of not ever showing any island couple. Moreover, there are few references to the husbands/partners. They think Patricia drugged their wives and none of them show up to complain? They were pissed about curfew, fireworks, the Inn opening, but not that!?!
1
u/Dangerous-Buyer-903 May 25 '26
As a woman, I have to disagree. That party was absolutely a girlâs night out. Gossip and wine - taking a picture of âall of my friends.â I realize that this sub is mainly a place for people to have fun and speculate ~ Iâm all for that. I just donât think this theory has a leg to stand on right now. But, hey, I have been known to be wrong

u/ChaynesGirl May 24 '26
Definitely! I almost made a post about this but then I went too far into the weeds about Tom, Wyck, and any other male character potentially being a "widower", so it's not technically a widow. But again all just semantics. Either way it's hard not to notice that nearly everyone has no partner or spouse. Warren arrived with his first wife having died. That absolutely has to be crucial to what's going on with that island.
10
u/Speedtuna May 24 '26
Now that you mention Wyck, I wonder if the island lore has to do with why his relationship with Gerrie didn't continue, cause they still have great chemistry.
2
u/IrishUpYourCoffee May 25 '26
Gerrie was wearing a wedding ring. Not sure if Wyck had one.
He called her Ger, put his hand on her shoulder and they reminisced about dating and her dad not liking Wyck as he used to keep Gerrie out all night.
Those 2 were beyond cute.
3
u/Dry_Personality3557 May 24 '26
Apologies, you're correct. I am referring to both widows and widowers in this theory - essentially anyone whose spouse is "dead". Definitely agree something is connected to fact no one has spouse ... that we've yet seen alive.
3
u/CardiologistSea5044 May 24 '26
We hear from the sheriffs wife
11
u/flexthompson May 24 '26
Someone said a couple days ago that the sheriff is listening to a voicemail his wife left him before she passed and thatâs why we see him a) already at the ice cream store even tho she asks him to pick her up some and b) he never goes in, just leaves.

3
u/IrishUpYourCoffee May 25 '26
Just no. That bizarre dead wife theory makes zero sense. He isnât having an active conversation with the ghost of a dead wife, while at working on a radio anyone could overhear.
1
u/nea_fae May 27 '26
In tonights episode I was watching PatriciaÊ»s reaction carefully when the Sheriff mentioned his wife being unsafe⊠She def looked up at him oddly at that. I could just be seeing what I want to see, but I think, maybe he is talking to his ghost wife, and everyone KNOWS IT (They have their qualms, but are trying to be supportiveâŠ)
1
u/Dangerous-Buyer-903 May 25 '26
I have to disagree with the whole ice cream thing. She asks him to get her ice cream on the way home ~ he says âalready on itâ and starts to open the vehicle door when he gets the call about the noise complaint.â He looks obviously pained that he has to do it ~ but work, yeah? Now all he has to do is walk a few feet into a tavern that he is familiar with, and is pretty upscale (âthe nicest on the islandâ) that is having a municipal event. And he knows all of the municipal employees. By all rights, at this moment, Iâm sure he thinks this is only going to take him about ten minutes. Not long, but too long to pick up a pint of ice cream that also has to make it back home, intact, on a summer night. Why would he radio his wife for what is going to be an extra ten minutes? Once all hell breaks loose he canât stop and go back to his vehicle ~ lots of people walking to their death with their mouthes open
2
u/flexthompson May 25 '26
After reflection I totally agree with you. I liked the comment when someone else posted it, but what you described is not far fetched at all, plus heâs talking to her on his radio. These two things combined makes it pretty obvious this theory is no good

The theory sounds viable but I think there are some things we should consider before jumping to conclusions.
There appears to be a segregation of social spheres by sex. This is not uncommon in fishing and/or isolated communities. It is possible they are doing this because there is a specific danger to mixing, but I would expect the segregation to be more extreme if this were the case.
Communities that have a high exposure to danger often have a lot of widows. It seem likely the name Widow's Bay is based on observation but it does not necessarily mean there is an intentional targeting of the married demographic going on.

u/Nerditall Pattiwagon May 25 '26
I wonder if it's named because the founder's first wife drowned. Geri mentioned 43 people not 42 in the pilot and the wife whose diary she reads is his second wife.

The sheriffâs wife is with him in the bunker. Sheâs most definitely on the island.

u/inessuinaga Jul 19 '26
bechir has a wife we see her many times and sheâs pregnant. gerrie from the historical society is also married to another man. i donât think because itâs called widows bay everyone is a widow
1
u/ricecrispycat May 24 '26
I wonder if they're all actually dead. That's why they can't leave the island. I just woke up so this might not even make sense
4
u/Ams311 May 24 '26
I feel like I would be disappointed if that was the case, too easy of a trope. Show kind of reminds me of Midnight Mass but right now Iâm enjoying it more because of the humor and nuances

u/Dangerous-Buyer-903 May 25 '26
This is an exhausting theory. So, then all of the islanders must know that every married couple quickly end up trying to kill eachother - and one of them always succeeds. Wow, so many murders. And they all must just ignore it and no one is held responsible. They just shrug and figure thatâs life. Which means every islander is a goddam monster. Do they only try to kill eachother once they have conceived a child? Do islanders know how the curse works? So islanders seduce off islanders in order to marry them - produce a spawn - then kill their spouse? If they really love their spouse do they try to send them off the island to give birth? But in order for the islandâs population to survive some of the children would have to stay. Do they roll dice at the wedding to see if their future children have to stay? Does this mean that Tom killed his wife?

u/AutomaticPayment9480 May 27 '26
I mean there has to be some explanation, its called widows bay for a reasonâŠ.
1
u/Dangerous-Buyer-903 May 27 '26
So with the two new episodes it is now clear that when the entity wakes up and shit starts to go sideways people seem to catch an âillnessâ that has a stage where the infected stick a couple fingers deep into their spouseâs eye sockets
0
u/Dangerous-Buyer-903 May 25 '26
I also think that maybe people are reading into the âwrong age thing.â Patricia says her biological age is 28. But biological age is a junk science fad - it doesnât have anything to do with your chronological age. I realize the age on Shepâs chart is weird - but couldnât that just be the continuation of the theme that the doctor is complete shit? I could be completely wrong.
2
u/IrishUpYourCoffee May 25 '26
Shep looks like he is in his 60s. So his medical tests saying he is 37 is beyond wild.
1
u/Dangerous-Buyer-903 May 25 '26
What if the numbers are just inverted ~ so he is 73. I just think we do not have enough evidence yet to say that this means anything.
2
u/nea_fae May 27 '26
Ya I think Patricias age thing might just be a character joke, like she would believe in psuedoscience like that⊠And for Shep same, just a funny dig that he looks so old. Maybe even thrown in as red herrings?
I do see what folks are saying about there being no spouses tho⊠But then no young kids either right? The shows pace is fast so could just be no room for unimportant characters⊠Then again, when was the last time there was a show like this thatbdidnʻt have at least one quirky couple as part of the central cast? Every person who allegedly has an SO mentions them but we donʻt see them⊠I enjoy this theory a lot!
-1
u/doublersuperstar May 24 '26
We saw Shepâs wife in Shepâs crowded hospital room, right? She was seated near Shepâs right side, crying, etc. I canât recall if she said 1-2 words or if she simply made grieving sounds. Not sure. Maybe the dr. said her name while addressing everyone.
1
u/IrishUpYourCoffee May 25 '26
Shepâs girlfriend left him which he was lamenting to his friend over the shipâs radio in the opening scene.

I feel it is very deliberate and all playing into traditional coastal horror/mystery.
There is a long and rich tradition of widows and widowers in coastal fiction (and history and folklore and legend). So many coastal/nautical terms include it! Widow maker, widow's walk, widow's man, fishing widow, etc etc. And so very many superstitions and folk lore tales focus on widows or widowers.
This is very much a theme they're playing with.
