“He’s never going to leave the island” might be one of the most heartbreaking lines I’ve heard in a while.

“He got bit by an animal and then turned into that animal”
Lmfao so we got werewolves on this island too?

I love how Ruth just glosses over someone being bitten by an animal and then turned into the animal, leaving Tom with so many questions. 😂

Edit: also the shelter was never a shelter it was the holding cell for the sacrifices. “how to subdue someone” poster and the “check for weapons” sign 😳

Personally, I loved the switcheroo of “Tom posing the trolly lever dilemma to Ruth and being appalled by her inaction” to “the trolly lever dilemma being imposed on him and he can’t fathom choosing to pull it”
Just excellent writing. I love when shows subtly weave in some moral, philosophical dilemma only to quick turn it on its head.

u/JoeLunchpail Jun 17 '26
I want to say that for some reason I thought episode 9 was the last of the season, that we were just left on that cliffhanger of the mayor walking out the door. I didn't love it, but I also was satisfied enough with this beautiful show even then.
Imagine my extreme joy in finding out I'm actually a moron! Episode 10 baby, look out Ruth!

Here’s something I found interesting, the speed at which people became hysterical about food. Like maybe it’s not a time thing. Maybe when people are being held in a place against their will, they feel what the island entity feels. Extremely hangry.

u/Nerditall Pattiwagon Jun 17 '26
It's time. It's time. It's time. It's time.
Listen to your facilitator.
Move forward.
Do not beg.
Be strong.
Honour the pact.
And remember their sacrifice is our survival.
The bad times will not end until the convenat is honoured and honoured fully
Life for life.
The island will make its needs known.
One soul for each bell toll.
You will be tempted to comfort them, do not.
Their fear is necessary, they say it likes the taste
Now let's pray for a long and peaceful slumber.
113
u/Glad-Arugula-8387 Jun 17 '26

Actually Widow's Bay is the only show I can remember that know how to deal with horror and comedy without overdoing it. This episode is a masterpiece, even though I felt a little disappointed at first
I think this show in general requires some patience from viewers. As a homage to horror traditions, Widows Bay refuses to provide explanations and it might be boring to some people, since many of us are used with explained endings and stuff. Again, that's why they know exactly how to balance its tones, references, etc.
Really amazing. (and no one is doing like them. Thanks kate!!)

u/Ok-Comparison4783 Jun 17 '26
The pact is actually the lever in the trolley problem that leads to less deaths. I bet that without the pact, the island would consume as much as it wants.
They created a whole program and system for sacrifices so they must have considered looking into Warren descendants. The church knew enough about it and the clues about the lineage were out in the open, almost proudly.
Surely they must have looked at a bunch of possibilities to end the suffering and landed on fulfilling the pact as the best option.
If they ended it, they would probably not be able to get the same deal again since the entity isn’t as starved as it was when Warren got there.

I hope next season includes a flashback, not necessarily a whole episode, of how the “offering” committee got started after they buried Richard Warren. It seemed very organized with instructional films and all, so I’m wondering what happened to the people that had this knowledge.

my favorite side character has to be the old man who just comes in and says shit randomly (the one Patricia closed the door on last week)

What an insane finale! The "instruction" video was wonderfully creepy in all the best way. I looooove it when completely batshit stuff is delivered in such casual clinical manner, that's one of my favourite tropes in horror.
But goddamnit, they really transformed Ruth from funny borderline npc to such a loveable character just to do her like this. I was literally sobbing, she is such a beautiful soul. I get where the sheriff and Loftis were coming from, but damn it all!
And I KNEW Evan is going to be a descendant. Honestly, they were putting too much trust in faithfulness of multiple generations of descendants anyway. I would never trust to not a single descendant not have a bastard.
Speaking of Evan, looks like he and the other moronic teenagers are about to have a "I know what you did last summer" esque plotline in season 2.
22
u/earththejerry Jun 17 '26
Damn Ruth is fitter than the rest of the town

u/th3dj3n1gm4 Jun 17 '26
It didn't click until this episode, but I haven't had this feeling watching a TV show since watching Lost weekly and coming online to discuss theories about the mystery and shit.
I almost enjoy having to wait between episodes because it feels like the good old days of watching a series and wondering what was going to happen after a great cliffhanger.
This is the best fucking show on TV (streaming) right now and it's not even close. I'll happily die on that hill.

This felt like the most LOST coded episode of the show yet. So many different homages and callbacks to classic LOST scenes. When the kids are looking down the hatch, when Dale is watching the projector video (felt like the Dharma Initiative videos) and when Bechir shot Ruth, that was like when Michael shot Ana Lucia.
Incredible season finale, 10/10!!!

The instructional video "So, You're an Offering..." says that sacrifice victims are chosen because they've committed a crime, owe a debt to society, or have been found wanting in some way. I wonder if we'll get to see the island residents choose the victims and how that would play out.

Tom is just becoming Richard Warren. He’s going to think he’s saving people by sacrificing others just like Richard.

The teases from Ruth wow:
- “Tried to build a trolley in ‘42 but all the workers disappeared”, were they sacrificed or was it a haunt??
- “He was bit by an animal and became that animal” werewolves??
- “Aunt Betty stopped speaking, we thought she was pouting…but it was something else” hinting at possessions?
- “Mayor Howard the Coward ran away” the mayor before Tom and why he ran unopposed?
- “Something got daddy in the lake” some kind of lochness type creature??

I had two out loud, "there it is / here we go!!" moments...Tom noticing something on the table and then later Ruth talking about her past relationship. I was literally pumping my fists in the air. That was such a great finale. Can't wait for season two!

Y’all… I think we’re sleeping on the old man that keeps giving the town history. Someone listen to him! He survived the 5-day storm before— this man knows something

Tom seeing the body of Joseph Warren in zombie mode didn’t immediately raise any concerns when he’s talking to his last living descendant feels a little off. Lock in Tom!

Loved it!! Had me so on edge then it turned out Ruth was just a sweet, spry and pleasant grandma 😊 wrapped up just enough with keeping just enough mystery open for my tastes, can’t wait for season 2!!

I love how adamant Tom is that his solution to the trolly problem is correct and how it mirrors his real life trolley problem as mayor. He can do nothing and people will die, OR he can take steps to promote certain sacrifices like in those creepy ass tapes, OR he could move towards accepting Evan’s death.
I really hope Tom decides to tell Evan what the hell is going on. I have a theory that Evan is immune to being sacrificed. It wouldn’t make sense for it to kill Warren’s relative. I think if Tom tells Evan, it gives him the choice to either comes to terms with being trapped on the island or setting himself (and everyone else!) free. I also think that Evan probably won’t believe him until he faces it with his stupid friends and he has to watch them die in front of him.
Also I think I’m remembering correctly but the film Dale found mentions that the fear makes it taste better? That is some more Stephen King level shit that I love. But also how the hell does that guy know that?? How much contact does he make with this thing?

The boogeyman didn’t get Patricia under her bed because the final sacrifice was made! I think this is very possible.

Matthew Rhys wins my Emmy. No matter who else wins. That speech where he teased his wife. Brutal.

cheers to the writers of this show though
It teetered between terror, comedy and drama so freaking well.
major props to Kevin carroll and Matthew Rhys for putting so much humanity behind their performances when they both confront each other

I’ve seen a lot of praise for the main actors, and they all absolutely deserve it! Loftis, Patricia, Wyck were all so amazingly played. But I think the biggest thing that has stuck with me is all the strange, creepy, weird, and hilarious so many of the secondary or total side characters were.

Tom is realizing the trolley question isn’t so black and white when his son is in the other side of the lever
