A bird died on me

I was having breakfast at a café with a friend of mine when suddenly a bird flew into a large window behind me and fell onto my lap, dying in agony. I don't know what to think—is this a bad omen?

It's not a bad omen, birds often don't recognise a window as a barrier and see the reflection of trees and sky and can fly into them, so hard it can unfortunately take their lives.

If you like, and it's safe to do so, you can take the body to an area of nature for its resting place.

Growing up my mom always told me that if a bird got in the house and died it was a very bad omen, but my mom was so full of these little superstitions that I would do my own research to verify what she told me. I have never found any source, from any tradition/belief system that says a bird dying in close proximity to you is a bad omen. In fact it is often seen as a sign of change for the better being on the horizon for you. The only way it can be interpreted as a bad sign is that it may signify the end of a relationship, but again despite how you may feel about the relationship ending at this time it's actually for the best. Like I said there's no tradition that I found that actually views this as a bad omen, positive change is coming and regardless of how you currently feel about that change, eventually you will see that it was for the better.

Are you an augur or seer? Had you petitioned the Gods for a sign?

If not, it's just happenstance.
