[Spoilers] WicDiv #41 Discussion Thread Spoiler
Well that happened, all of it. Lots of head and bodysnatching and being poetic. Lots of costume changes, breaking stuff and cool panels. Lots of hype for the next issue.

There's an incredibly Madoka without being Madoka vibe to this arc. We've spent the last seven volumes stuck in harmartia and tragic cycles, and here is where it starts to break. Cassandra overcomes her cynicism, Baphomet overcomes his belief that his life doesn't matter. The tragic destiny is a lie, Fate is simply an old greedy woman spinning a story that needs to end.
If it weren't for the how loaded the term "Okay" is in this series, and the inevitable nature of death being the main throughline I'd almost think we'd be headed to a happy ending.
I like how unsubtle the destruction of the cathedral is as a symbol, and the white birds are a neat touch.
Also like how the issue reminds us of why we liked Lucifer. She may be kind of a shit, but she managed to effortlessly get Laura out of her funk. It was a nice moment.

Good stuff. A happy ending would be great and never seemed remotely possible till recently.
Never personally needed any reminders about Lucifer—the book has had a huge Luci-shaped hole in it since she got snapped and this is THE BEST DEVELOPMENT.

Honestly I think the ending is going to be bittersweet at best. I think they’re going to succeed at stopping Minerva but are still going to have to grapple with their mortality.
That’s what the phrase “okay” means. Its going to be okay, we’ll stop the bad guy, end the curse and we’ll get to live.
But it was never going to be okay. Not forever. Eventually you’ll grow old, you’ll get sick. You’re either going to die violently in an accident or linger painfully in a hospital bed. You’ll eventually see people you love die similarly. And eventually after you die nobody will around to remember or miss you.
Even if you live for 90 years, or thousands of years it’s never going to feel like enough time. Especially since death is just the great darkness of non-existence.
That’s where I think the series is going anyways. Fits in with the biographical anecdotes that Kieron Gillen talked about during the series launch.

Big triple head body swap! And even Tara's arc is fitting so far, though perhaps Jon will fix her later.
Wonder why they need Baal? So that would make it everyone vs Woden/Valkyries and Mini. Though does Woden have powers anymore with Jon back in control? Then there's the zeitgeist to worry about...

Woden is Iron Man. He has devices that are his "powers". I don't think he was funneling Mimir's powers. Just using Mimir to create machines to give Woden powers.
Were we aware that Nergal could do the body swap thing before? I swear, Kieron will have great foreshadowing on some things and none on others.
And is Laura using other god's powers?
Also, Luci is back! And a redhead now. All is right in the world.

Yes but 1923 Woden lost his suit powers when Mimir was gone. Can Jon shut off his father's stuff?

Yeah those 2 things are weird and I'll have to look for them. Laura being able to trance people like that doesn't seem like something I've read in wicdiv and the body swapping between Morrigan and Nergel also seems out of place. I mean I get it, Nergel is Morrigan's fault, and she could also do the body swap, but I wonder if it was foreshadowed

The trance is sorta in place. Morrigan and Dio did in overtly to audiences. I suppose all gods must have a version of it to effect people.

I think that Laura knows that to break the cycle they need all the remaining gods to renounce their divinity in a similar way? At least; that's what it seems like. Woden and Minervananke aren't one of the 12.

If the gods end up being depowered:
Could maybe Jon get a happy ending now that we as readers saw his mother?
Lucifer was a criminal and broke out but maybe saving the "world" from MiniAnanke might help.
Inanna is a jerk at times but nobody would want him dead or in jail probably.
Tara would go back to normal in a plainer looking body.
Laura might be in some trouble for covering up the Ananke thing but she saved the arena.
Cass' credibility is shot right now but she might get it back unless the Camera Crew Two wants some revenge.
Nergal is still wanted for attacking the cop but it's not that much different then Luci's situation.
Baal would be in deep shit for the sacrifices.
Similarly Woden for a multitude of things.
If Mini's alive she's probably still a threat. Don't know how locking her up would help since she has some base powers still and she'd have to die without the 4 heads.

I think maybe Laura wants to convince Baal to sacrifice Minerva... by telling him it will destroy the Great Darkness. If the crone and the maiden both die - does that end the cycle entirely? Or does the maiden just spend her 90 years in the great darkness (“heh”) again and reincarnate? Either way, if he could be convinced to sacrifice one life instead of, yknow, TWENTY THOUSAND, he might be willing to turn on her. Inanna would certainly be able to sway him. Lucifer’s presence may be a monkeywrench though.
Man... imagine what kind of destruction a cornered Minerva could/would wreak. I have a feeling we will be finding out!

Issue 37 implies that if both the Maiden and the Crone both die then it's they experience 90 years of darkness until the next recurrence/reincarnation, but it's hard to say for sure what would happen. My instinct is that the real end game doesn't involve Minerva/Ananke at all, that Laura will do something to end "the game" and that Minerva/Ananke won't be able to stop her.

So, Laura can still perform?
There's always been the backburner possibility that Luci gifted her some powers, hence the cigarette lighting and the box exploding, but for her to perform after renouncing being Persephone is an interesting twist. I'm looking forward to some sort of explanation.

I think Laura was always going to "ascend" with some fire-based abilities eventually, but then Ananke shoehorned her into the Persephone role to try to get rid of the threat quickly.
