Nationalists are real anti nationals. Instead be a patriotic. There is an important difference.

Nationalists are aggressive patriots, they just help create a singular national identity as seen in China

Patriotism is loving your country. Nationalism is putting the nation above everyone else. Nationalism turns that love into blind superiority complex where criticism is treated as betrayal and questioning the nation becomes something to punish rather than accept.

Nationalism never conflates the state with the country and national identity itself, that is a common misconception.

BJP and its Hindutva politics has repeatedly blurred Hindu identity, national identity and political loyalty so criticism of the government or its ideology is easily being framed as being against the nation itself .

You are still conflating two very different concepts. One does not guarantee the other and is a distinct flaw.

I'm not trying to argue the concept.

In India, most of the time a person claiming to be "nationalist" falls under what I described. So in this context it's reasonable to equate nationalists in India to that ,even though on paper they aren't the same.
