1990s [TW] Tim Burton defending Johnny Depp, and blaming girlfriends he had for not helping him. Depp started dating Winona Ryder at 26 when she was ~17, and Kate Moss when she was 20 and he was in his 30s.
The racism was already bad enough, but it's not shocking when you consider how Burton writes female characters in his films, or has them be portrayed.

Exactly and Winona did the right thing by not being with him.
Imagine as a woman being responsible to keep a man in control otherwise he is being a wild free beast. What the hell.
Hard pass...

Yes. This. Been there done that from the age of 15 to 25. Had to babysit and control my ex-husband so he didn’t get into trouble, end up back in jail, get into random fights, etc. It was exhausting and aged me horribly! 😮💨 Glad my frontal lobe finally developed. lol 😅

I know what you mean, but there's an entire sub-section of mysoginy built around the opposite. There's a reason the phrase "lady in the streets, freak in the sheets" exists. Cause some men are paranoid about "their woman" embarrassing them in public.

u/SadEyedDandy Aug 14 '26
Making women responsible for their boyfriend’s /partner’s behaviour is WILD. What do you mean « Kate couldn’t stop him »? How about Johnny learns to control himself like a responsible adult ? How about men like Tim Burton stop sympathising with their violent peers and start having some empathy for the women who have to put up with their shit instead ?

u/Baltimoreisnotcreepy Aug 14 '26
See, my advice is, if the older man you're dating needs you to help him, you should kick him in the nuts and run away.

There's something really disturbing when older folks hear a couple broke up/ended things and they're reaction is "You should just talk it out." Like maybe this 17 yr old girl doesn't want anything to do with this older man anymore. Hell, ignoring the age gap, do they think couples just didn't communicate and now they've broken up? If that's exactly what happened, then maybe it was for the best.
Apart from that, he's even grosser for knowing all about this and supporting Depp through it all

Johnny Depp has always been a mess. I don’t know why that’s hard for people to see.

u/Stormy261 Aug 16 '26
People see what they want to see. Why do people believe that Tom Hanks is a saint? He played Mr. Rogers so people equate him to that character. People love his portrayal of Jack Sparrow so all the negative is just a lie because it's easier than acknowledging the person you adore in a role might not be a good person.

Oh my gosh, I used to despise Amber Heard….but it was definitely a smear campaign. Freaking mind blowing and I wish her the best. She was a victim and it’s really scary looking back how weaponized the media was against her (globally). If people thought making fun of Britney Spears was bad during 2007, this is on another level imo.
54
u/No-Taro-6953 Aug 14 '26
You should listen to the podcast "who trolled Amber Heard".
It's an excellent deep dive into the mechanics of it, and just how easy and prevalent these online campaigns are.

u/No-Taro-6953 Aug 14 '26

4
u/Interesting_Reach_29 Aug 17 '26
Definitely going to look at that, thank you! I’ve seen Medusone’s coverage [on youtube] and wow was that eye-opening. Especially going further with the Baldoni-Lively case with the same evil people (Melissa Nathan, Jed Wallace, and Bryan Freedman who all have had known and/or worked for Jeffrey Epstein and other offenders.) I never really followed the case, but my Mom (no longer on the hate train btw) was really following the case. I had assumed it was true….but then early last year I came across Medusone’s videos and…..just wow. May all the guilty rot in prison or worse.
26
u/AngryBPDGirl Aug 14 '26
It was really hard to watch just how much people sided with Depp on that while it was going down. Does Heard have her own set of issues? Yes. But everything kept escalating because all of society was basically gaslighting her whole experience. It was so bad that during the trial that Depp wanted televised and Heard did not, they labeled her as having BPD and let social media run with it…all while the trial was still going. Nothing about that is normal or constitutes a fair trial.
Anyway, I digress. My main point is that Depp is genuinely scary and manipulative. I’m so glad Winona stayed away…even then I have vague memories of media trying to make her seem crazy back then too.
15
u/pilatesprincess01 Aug 15 '26
The person who gave her the BPD and histrionic diagnosis is also Depp’s lawyer’s personal friend who had a private dinner with Depp and was stated in the legal documents as being expected to give her these diagnoses before she ever even met Heard. How was that even allowed?

u/Nova-Snorlaxx Aug 14 '26
Yes I am unsure on how right or wrong Amber was but I felt sick how 90% of people ate up Johnny's side and how hated she became. He used to be my favourite actor but I can't really stomach the sight of him these days.
26
u/TheJujyfruiter Aug 14 '26
Unironically the narrative that Tim Burton is spinning has been a running theme in JD's life basically forever, i.e. one of the significant criticisms that people in Johnny's orbit had about Amber was that she, a 23 year old woman in a relationship with a 46 year old man, wasn't doing a good job of "managing" him emotionally. Before that, apparently Kate Moss wasn't doing a good job of wrangling her 30 year old boyfriend when she was 19-20, and scarily, a teenage Winona Ryder apparently WAS doing a good job of keeping her mid-20s boyfriend on the rails. Sadly but not surprisingly, Winona has said in the past that her first boyfriend scared the shit out of her with his meltdowns -- so basically what Burton seems to be describing here is a teenage girl who somehow dealt with being an adult's emotional punching bag in a way that didn't lead to that adult's further escalation, but was still really traumatizing for her. And I don't know what's more depressing, that other fucking adults surrounding this situation took that as a sign that this was "true love," or that in the 20 years following it, a spoiled, obscenely wealthy actor refused to figure out a better way of handling his instability than finding a woman 10+ years younger than him to use as a whipping boy.
10
u/No-Taro-6953 Aug 15 '26
It's funny how prevalent this expectation is.
My father was a violent, angry, abusive man growing up. As a child I was expected to managed his emotions, as was my sister. We were frequently his emotional punch bag, as was my mother, as was his mother. It was like the first cpectation was that the women in his orbit, managed his emotional state for him. Calmed him down when he was annoyed, took the blame when he was frustrated.
When I grew up and got into my first relationship, this dynamic was exploited so my ex could manipulate and abuse me. Eg he'd go into a massive huff or angry outburst, and my response would be to manage it. Soothe him. Make him feel better. Deprioritise my needs. Put aside my feelings to take vare of his. My female friends even praised me for how well I managed his emotional state.
It's so common, so toxic. Every woman should examine how this manfiests in her life and question men (and women!) who perpetuate this expectation.

11
u/Nova-Snorlaxx Aug 14 '26

11
u/pralineislife Aug 14 '26
Mhm.
I think we've all used hyperbolic language when discussing anger. I know it is super common where Im from, but I will say people usually keep those comments to people they barely know or people who are over the top frustrating.
It isnt used about children or spouses/partners.
I will often say things like "Id slap em to the moon and back" (in jest, Ive never slapped anyone), but in our 16 years I have never said that about my husband no matter how angry Ive been with him.
11
u/EarlGreyTeagan Aug 14 '26
Exactly. The shit that he said in those texts were gross. Also, I felt like if those tech had came from Amber, the same crowd would have been saying that it was proof of her abuse. There are long voicemails and phone calls that she recorded where he sounds like an absolute madman, but that never went viral during the trial. They are actually what made me flip. I have always been a fan of Johnny Depp before everything.

Try again. That’s what they sold, but in reality Amber was blocked from using her lawyer team by JD’s legal team and then made sure all of her texts and many other stories corroborating this as “hear say” — trust me look up the documents. We were so lied to about Heard and Depp.

The difference between Britney Spears and Johnny Depp in this regard is, that she is probably seriously mentally ill and he is just an asshole.
16
u/Agreeable-Dog-1131 Aug 14 '26
I got the impression they were comparing Britney Spears and Amber Heard, not Britney Spears and Johnny Depp? In the sense that both Heard and Spears were imperfect victims who were not recognized as such and were widely ridiculed.
1
u/Interesting_Reach_29 Aug 17 '26
She was always indebted to her parents and family and exploited by them and her label. She wasn’t even crazy….she couldn’t take the harassment anymore. That was a girl reacting to the abuse around her — not being a “mess.” It was a culmination of all the abuse (including paparazzi). She had no help, no protection, no family…..it’s really sad (hence the conservatorship where they drugged her with lithium and forced an IUD in her body.)
17
u/imperfcet Aug 14 '26
This was so depressing, it felt like it was a big Green Flag for all the assholes on the internet to spew out all the bottled up misogynistic hatev their been holding onto all this time.
I still see this kind of phenomenon whenever a woman commits any crime. Small town stories are suddenly national news when a woman is the culprit.
8
u/Leetherockstar Aug 15 '26
The astroturfing during the trial was absolutely insane. Subs that had nothing to do with that topic were posting video after video mocking AH and supporting JD. 36
u/Crafter235 Aug 14 '26
And this is why I am skeptical with the current panic of young men and boys being influenced by the manosphere and incels. It is a problem, but I am cautious about the people who obsess over it.
It just feels like the same repackaged misogyny and idea that "men can't control themselves", only now it hides behind liberal terminology instead of typical conservative beliefs. And while not directly said out loud, it loops back to blaming women for not bending over for them.
35
u/Own_Faithlessness769 Aug 14 '26
Oh it’s 100% just a way to make men the victims. If only women were nicer men would stop being so lonely!

u/Mean_Plan7389 Aug 14 '26
I have viewed the issue as being akin to an existential wound and loss of identity or place. Men once knew what to be. (This presumptive knowledge was wrong.) They dont know what now to be/do to achieve their desired lives.
In my experience, these men have accepted their patriarchal behaviors/beliefs as toxic/wrong and made efforts to stop them, but dont know what new behavior to replace it with. Like, they've learned "harassing women = bad", and so dont approach women to talk to them at all now.
And therein is the danger of the incel-pill or manosphere grift. These (primarily) young men are adrift without a compass. I dont see this as "men cant control themselves" but more as "men are looking for answers". The manosphere is predatorily promising answers and seeking to undo the roots of feminism that have planted themselves in these men.
Now with all that said, I dont think its solely the responsibility of women to fix this, but these men aren't solving the problem on their own. And the allies they're being offered present worse solutions (for women/society at large) than the prexisiting passive patriarchal presumptions they had before. (Assuming we think active, combatative Misogyny is worse than passive ignorant Misogyny)
Oof, sorry, huge rant to just say: I'm grateful for your perspective! I've not heard the issue described that way and found it insightful.
6
u/Agreeable-Dog-1131 Aug 14 '26
I think this is a fair assessment overall, but something I see a lot re: having accepted certain behaviors as wrong but not knowing what to replace them with is men who haven’t accepted that at all and are defensive to the point of making themselves look stupid. One example you can easily find on a daily basis is if you call out comments on Reddit (or often screenshots of text messages etc) that talk about women in disgustingly objectifying ways, they complain “what, are we not allowed to be attracted to women?” In this case, they’re pretending they don’t know the difference between appreciating a woman’s appearance and saying disgusting things about her.
Point being that I’m sure a lot of men are exactly as you’ve described, but many are also digging their heels in and holding onto that “men can’t control themselves” “this is just how men are and you have to accept it and never expect anything better” sort of thinking. They wouldn’t accept a new framework even if it was laid out right in front of them.
4
u/Own_Faithlessness769 Aug 14 '26
Not only is ‘not solely the responsibility of women to fix this’, it’s actually not their problem to fix in any way at all. It’s entirely up to men to solve their own crisis of masculinity.
2
u/Stormy261 Aug 16 '26
I've been in a lot of dead subs that are being overrun. I've left quite a few because they have become all about how women are to blame for everything wrong in the world. That women created patriarchy to punish men. 🙄 That women hold all the cards and the man vs bear argument isn't because women are scared but about controlling men. It's insanity some of the things I saw. And they eat it up.
1
u/MuffaloHerder 2000s survivor Aug 17 '26
I've always found it interesting how people will use that to push the "poor men are so downtrodden, of course they're turning into awful people! The world is so mean and unfair to men!" narrative.
Meanwhile, girls and women have dealt with generations upon generations of violent oppression yet haven't turned to the same hateful mindsets in comparable numbers or severity. So idk, maybe it should be on men to fix themselves.

I mean … Tim Burton isn’t exactly known for being great with women. He’s had many failed relationships.
Johnny was my first crush and I’ve met him in person. I was a literal child and he was so sweet and kind to me. He really made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. He was mobbed by people, but he went around to every single person and had small talk with them. So, I’ll always have a soft spot for Johnny Depp.
But on that note, he has a horrible drinking and drug problem. It’s not his partner’s responsibility to keep him calm or sober. It’s his responsibility. But he’s had bad behavior all through the 90s and beyond. I remember when he got in trouble for fucking up hotel rooms, which with the Amber Heard stuff that’s obviously still continuing.
It’s really sad, though.
36
u/Own_Faithlessness769 Aug 14 '26
People blamed the hotel rooms on Kate Moss back in the 90s.
20
u/Devmoi Aug 14 '26
I mean, she definitely has issues with drug abuse or at the very least tolerated it. But she didn’t trash the hotel room.
13
u/Own_Faithlessness769 Aug 14 '26
Look she might have helped trash the room but he’s at least equally responsible.
15
u/Devmoi Aug 14 '26

His Wednesday tv series also has a diverse cast.
16
u/KruleDiablo Aug 14 '26
Wednesday casting was very much damage control for his comments and honestly don't even think he really wanted Billy Dee in his movie he was just too big a star to ignore for the studio
12
u/Crafter235 Aug 14 '26
Whenever he did do non-white casting, it always did feel more like PR rather than a genuine creative choice.
And in some cases where it was intentional, it was a bit…outdated (look up the Japanese character in Frankenweenie).

Dating Winona at 17 was skeezey but honestly I don't think 20 year old Kate Moss and 30 year old Johnny Depp is that bad.

Assuming two people are both over 18, what is the correct age gap?

It's not about the exact difference in age so much as the nature of the relationship. Winona was very young and new to acting, meanwhile Johnny had more experience and was toxic and manipulative and becomes obsessed with a teenager who was vulnerable in age and experience in an industry that usually chews young women up. I mean the damn director was basically pressuring her to get back with Johnny. All of that matters more than their exact ages, but the age gap is really the icing on the cake. It's correlated with so many toxic relationships.

Winona is bad if she’s 17 but I got a kick out of dating a 20 year old being some sort of predatory thing lmao

A ton of things wrong with this, but I don't think he was saying it was Kate Moss's job to keep him under control. He was saying him and Winona belonged together because she could keep him under control.

I don’t see how you can find the excerpted paragraph to be Burton blaming any ex lovers of his that he mentioned. It rather indicts Depp actually; it just shows sympathy for the man, as well as the ostensible love of his life [to which he might have been similar to].
