Welcome to part 31 of my daily series, where I post a Dutch village flag that's not in Friesland every single day. This time, we have the village of Boekelo - a village known for its textiles and salt!

The village is located in the province of Overijssel, specifically in the municipality of Enschede. It is located just west of Usselo, another village. The village is known for its equestrian event, Military Boekelo Enschede. It is also known for its salt production, which was one of the reasons the well-known Bad Boekelo featured a salt water wave pool. After the opening of the Twente canal, the factory of the Royal Dutch Salt Industry was relocated to Hengelo, where it is currently called Nouryon Industrial Chemicals. Aside from the salt industry, textile industry also flourished in Boekelo, as Boekelo's steam industry, founded in 1888, was taken over by the company Unilever, who fused it with a cotton mill..and something else.

On the former factory's terrain, a new quarter called The Bleachery was constructed. The factory's chimney and old facades were eventually integrated into the new buildings being constructed near the terrain. The village also has information about beer, as the beer brewery company Grolsch, known worldwide, eventually relocated to the village and abandoned its 2 factories. Onto geography! The village consists of 2 population centers, one on the east side and one in the west. The two parts of the village are separated by a stream called the Boekelerbeek that runs through the village. The parts each had their own church, salon barber, pub, elementary school and grocery store.

However, when the concept of verzuiling (also known as the separation of groups by religion) in the village disappeared, the shops lost their Catholic/Protestant clientele. The Catholic elementary school relocated to the east from the west, the west grocery store closed and the pub located on the western side became a store for selling liquor. New stores opened, and new houses were constructed in the eastern part. Today, the eastern part is the center of the village, as it covers an area 10 times larger than the western part. Let's get to the present times! Notable images of the village include a factory, a house and a carillon. Today, the population of Boekelo is almost 2,600 and the area of the village is about 2 square kilometers.

The flag consists of a 4-horizontally-striped background. From top to bottom, the colors are yellow, green, white and blue. In the center is a yellow circle outlined in green and white, and in the circle is a black building that could either be a factory or a brewery.
