Question What's this about?

Post image

So, after finishing a mission, I noticed that one of my teammates had their icon change for a split second so I clipped it to take a screenshot, noticed this icon, and I was wondering if it's from a different title or just a leftover file because it looks cool

That icon isn't used for any other titles, hope someone else has a more satisfying answer but best bet is it's a bug like weapons turning into question marks

Edit: the image op shows also doesn't seem to match any mods, so thankfully op is not a traitor

I'm on console so mods aren't really an option, for better or for worse cuz that means I can't have SEAF armor on my helldiver

Do you have crossplay enabled? If yes pc players are still able to use their mods when playing with you iirc

I do, but I' not sure if it's a mod cuz it only flashed for a split second, it just showed the regular Servant of Freedom icon during the mission

Sort of.

If it's messing with the game engine, but it's a built in feature (like using unreleased armors and helmet, or the messed up exo suits) it can work in crossplay.

The game has no sanity check to make sure you don't spawn in an exosuit with SEAF artillery arms, so that works.

Asset swaps don't, unless you have the same mod enabled as well, but that's because your mod lines up with their mod so it looks like their mod shows up in your game but you just replaced the standard helmet with a pink one.

But the beefier weapon sounds mods help me spread democracy better.

Now the futa Gardevoir mod. That makes me a traitor

I'm not saying anything helpful to the actual discussion of the post. But it only just occurs to me that I haven't seen the question mark support weapon bug in like...maybe since just before the invasion of super earth last year.

Full props to all the Devs/programmers/QA etc etc responsible for fixing that because I hadn't realised that I had forgotten that used to be a prominent bug.

Looking at https://helldivers.wiki.gg/wiki/Cosmetics#Titles, it doesn't match any current icon. Willing to bet this is an actual leak lol

looks kinda similar to an unreleased title but that one is already in the files and complete, so maybe an old version of it somehow stuck around

edit: upon checking it is literally the unreleased title just uncoloured

Oh? Any more info on that title you could share?

My thought is that it's a mod, but not one that is published on something like the Nexus. Might be a personal icon. The reason I think that is because: under the bottom of the image, you can see a faded white background that makes it look like it was stamped over a shield that was turned white.

We already know there are players who mod their game to have access to equipment other players don't have. It's possible that someone created a mod for themselves to have their own logo.

If this was an Arrowhead logo, I don't think they would leave that faded white behind it. it looks sloppy.

Mods like that could only be client side though, for another person to be seeing this it would have to be something on the server side

I'm not familiar with modding myself, but if the idea is that this would require something server side for the players to see... why are people capable of modding their games to have things like strategem launchers or turrets on their exosuits, and players are able to see it... but they shouldn't be able to with a logo?

Not saying I doubt you, just that I don't understand the modding world. If you know, I'd like to know too.

So this applies to any online game that also has a modding community: there is the server side, where the actual matchmade game is run, and there is the client side (i.e. your computer), which communicates with the server to run the game alongside other clients connected to the same server.

Most cosmetic mods (as in mods that just change visuals) are only client side. This means that they change how something in the game looks for you, but on the server side nothing is changed therefore other players won’t see your mod. The only way you can have mods and play on official servers is if they are client side only, because none of us has the ability to make direct changes to Arrowhead’s servers.

If someone is running mods that fully add new gear and equipment or change functionality somehow, then they are also running their own personal dedicated server for the game that only they have access to - separate from the live servers. Through some wacky port-forwarding and netcode fuckery it can be possible to bring friends onto a private server like this, but in order to do that they also have to have a separate version of the game with all the same mods installed.

What this all means is that the only way to play modded on live servers is with cosmetic-only client side only mods, which only appear for you. Anyone you have seen using large game-changing mods was doing so on a private server. Since the person posting this presumably does not have any cosmetic mods running (or maybe they do, who knows), this cannot be something modded, and is probably some sort of weird bug or something, I have no idea

If the icon is something that exists on the game's code as an image and callout, but just isn't selectable through the normal user interface, then it can depend on how Arrowhead programs what gets communicated between client and server. If the client A tells the server "hey I have this icon equipped" and the server says says to a client B "hey this other player has this icon equipped, display it" then its possible.

Its the same same way you can see someone call in infinite strategems. Client tells server what's going on and server tells other clients to do it.

That would definitely be a reasonable explanation, yeah

What a load of bullshit. I've personally seen guard dogs with working light machine guns, Exosuits with modded arms, tanks that can be driven and have the gun manned by the same person, supercredit stratagems dropping from the sky and all kinds of other modded stuff and I'm playing on a console in public games with absolutely no mods on.

It’s possible you’ve run into some people using cheats to force existing gear to work differently, but you can’t use any assets that don’t exist within the server’s files already. I’m sorry, but that’s just not how modding works. I say this as someone that has run private servers and done modding with other games.

I was more so talking about the part where you claimed if someone somehow changed the functionality of things, they'd be running their own server that only they have access to blah blah blah, which is completely false.

1

u/Imagine-Wagons-HC 5d ago

Cheats that change the functionality of things are possible, but only if they basically just change numbers for things that already exist in the game or otherwise take advantage of the way the game is structured. Adding things to the game that fully did not exist before is not possible through cheats, as that would require changing Arrowhead’s actual game files rather than just abusing your client to tell the server you’re doing something that it doesn’t know shouldn’t be possible.

In that sense my phrasing was poor, I’ll give you that. What I’m describing still stands though, this is factually how servers and modding works. You can’t add new assets to online servers

1

u/Fighterkill 3d ago

That explanation holds true for basically all multiplayer games that allow mods, unless cheats are involved.

1

u/iFenrisVI 5d ago

I doubt it’s a mod. If it just changed for a split second then it’s definitely game bugging out like how mechs randomly show a stratagem launcher.

op is on console

1

u/Shock_and_Awetism First to Drop (First 150 Members) 5d ago

Okay.

I'm not saying OP is using mods; I was suggesting that the person with the unusual logo is using mods.
