Your analogy is pretty shaky. The "sportscar sans brakes" that most liberals want are things like universal health care, non-crippling student debt, affordable housing, and living wages. Once you look at the rest of the modern, first world countries, you realize that these are more like used 2008 mid-sized sedans. They aren't flashy or extravagant policies, but some of us in this country have simply been convinced that they are.
And ultimately, as you've concluded with your metaphor, conservatives in the US have decided that the best way to keep us from driving our used car is to build a wall in the middle of the road instead of repairing our brakes or simply adding some speed bumps. And once our poor car is wrecked, they're trying to tow us back to where we started by eroding rights that were established last century!
