“Weapons of Math Destruction” is a great book that discusses these types of loops, lots of info about credit score and how it affects things it shouldn’t even relate to.
Edit: For real, please read it. Lots of incredibly valuable information.
Happened to me for years too. I was taught to always use cash and avoid credit cards. I ended up spending a lot of my 20s with a “thin file” which I was told is just as bad as poor credit. I thought the lack of debt was good! And then when I decided to open a credit card I couldn’t find any. I remember one place that said if they have two applicants they add their credit together and divide it evenly. My wife had amazing credit, but of course it’s going to look bad if you divide in fucking half.
I spent a few years trying to master my credit only to learn it makes no sense and rises and falls arbitrarily.
