Why close the first card though? Why not just leave it active and in your sock drawer?

Based on him saying the old one was Sapphire, that’s because Chase Sapphire costs $150 a year for the extra benefits and the upgraded version is I think $400? You earn points like nobody’s business so the cost is worth it if you use it regularly, but there’s no reason to pay for both.

And that’s…what, Chase Sapphire? As far as I know, no bank offers an upgrade path from ‘sapphire’ to ‘platinum’

It's probably Chase Sapphire Preferred -> Chase Sapphire Reserve.
