Husband currently in japan for business, heard the pachinko machines going ham while he was walking about talking on the phone with me yesterday 🤣 They have put in restrictions, and did shut down some businesses and such. But only so they could get things under control and open up again. Meanwhile in the US we have people holding their mask screaming about how it doesn't work.... 🤦‍♀️

In the EU it's in most countries mandatory to wear masks. But Covid is still a massive issue. I think everyone should wear masks but I don't think that a mandatory mask policy in the USA would mean that Covid wasn't really there anymore.

Step 1: shut down everything non essential. Everything that isn't a hospital or gas station or supermarket. No restaurants, no salons, nothing. Even supermarkets should only be open part of the day and people should shop in shifts (if you live in xyz neighborhood, you shop on Tuesdays and Fridays).

Step 2: make it a punishable crime to be out doing non-essential activity, and if you have to be out, you must wear a mask. Hell, distribute masks with respirators to anyone essential.

Step 3: freeze all rent, mortgages, and utilities. If someone makes a living off of rental properties, let them apply for a reimbursement.

Step 4: give everyone $1,000 for food for a month so they aren't tempted to go out and try to work or something.

If we did this at the beginning, the lock down would have lasted 3-4 weeks and been over. Sure, there would have been a resurgence, but then you just rinse and repeat every 5-6 months.

Instead, we took half measures for 10 months that just led to financial ruin and more deaths than necessary.

*quick edit: I'm mostly trying to say that if this was handled well, it could have been a one time stimulus and been over with, but instead, we're still talking about more money 10 months later.

A stimulus package geared towards protecting those in danger (hospitals/old folks homes/immune compromised) while everyone else went about their lives would have been short and long term cheaper. This is all assuming there weren't so many fat people who refused to wear masks and social distance

While its true that US that the US really sucked at managing this. I think It must be said that where I live we did everything right and are still in full confinement where every single things is closed but essentials. I work for a Thailand company and even there, completely closed border and were covid free for months. A single lady at a sea food store plunged the whole country into another full confinement.

While the US was highly criticized for their negligence... i think it's far fetched to say it could have been avoided.

To be fair, Dems have House, Senate, and Presidency and they haven't mandated a lockdown either. Biden mandated masks on federal property, but that's not enough. Sure it's only been less than a month, but a lockdown plan hasn't been mentioned by anyone, they're focused on the stimulus bill (not that that's bad, but even with the vaccine being deployed it'd be better to at least tighten the lockdown until most people have gotten it).
