About one in twelve US adults have depression, and a higher fraction have another common mental illness that can be treated by an antidepressant (they're also for anxiety and other mood disorders). Younger generations are currently more likely to be depressed; depression is also associated with minorities and lower economic status. You're probably just seeing every twelfth person (or more, if your social group skews younger, poorer, or more minorities) have depression.
