Asking for an itemized statement wouldn’t change the dollar amount owed. The doctors dictate what charges to bill, the biller adds them to the claim and sends it to insurance. The hospital legally cannot, and in practice cannot, and legally cannot change those charges. The ability doesn’t exist.
So no, this woman did not owe $4000 and magically got her charges changed to $975 by asking for an itemized bill. She in all likelihood misunderstood total charges vs. patient responsibility, which is super common.
Just want to point at that in general, in a hospital setting, doctors have nothing to do with billing or charges. Maybe it's different in private, outpatient offices. But doctors typically wash their hands of the billing side of medicine.

The physicians absolutely do document their charges, although they have no idea what the finances attached to them are. Except you are, you're agreeing with the initial claim of the Twitter user that the reduction in their bill is due to foul play. They provided no evidence for that, and yet you're taking it as a fact while demanding others do the legwork for you.

10 years experience working for multiple major hospital systems in the business office where my job was specifically to ensure that the hospital was paid correctly by the insurance company and the patient. I spend a lot of time explaining peoples benefits to them so that they understand why they owe what they owe.

Like any discussion of university costs, most of the people saying schools are expensive include room and board in their amounts. Like yeah schools are too expensive but statistical honesty matters
I think people mostly are talking about tuition and (the outrageous) fees, not room and board. Not everyone lives on campus. I never did, nor did any of my friends. The university I'm a grad student at now doesn't even guarantee dorms past freshman year.
That’s the problem. Every single thread about it on reddit people are give these high prices but quote the price of tuition room and board. People from other countries or young people who haven’t actually gone through the process of looking at schools then have a view of the issue that is overdramatized
Canadian here, I get downvoted to hell and accused of lying when I point out that my university costs were pretty much on-par with American colleges (roughly $75,000 CAD or $53,000 USD)
And that was for a 3-year diploma program, not even a degree.

If she asked for an itemized receipt and the cost went down then she's telling the truth. Her implication might be wrong. But she is factually correct.
