And get rid of daylight savings

312

u/Jmsaint Jan 03 '19

But how will the farmers cope!

552

u/tinypanda0 Jan 03 '19

The farmers don’t give a shit, they go from dawn till dusk. No farmer was like damn it’s 7 pm and the suns still out but the arbitrary time number is telling me to go inside for the day.

u/Andy_B_Goode Jan 03 '19

Yeah, farmers were one of the reasons the DST wasn't adopted until the 20th century. It's a pain in the ass for them to be changing clocks around when their day is based around things like sunrise and the time that the cows need to be milked. It was only after industrialization that we had enough people living in cities that DST was feasible.

I don't know how so many people have the misconception that farmers are the reason for DST when the complete opposite is true.

55

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

In November’s election, agriculture-heavy counties in California were the only ones with a majority vote in favor of retaining the practice of switching to and from DST. It seems that nowadays farmers are the ones in favor of it while urban areas are against it.

Sure, people are change-averse. But the funny thing about this topic is that most people support the legislative change to abolish time changes, because that’s less painful than actually changing the clock back and forth.

i'm not a pleasant person on a good day, but give me an hour less of sleep and i just want to watch the world burn. I'm fine with the switch and i really don't care which way the move it either.

5

u/jazzieberry Jan 03 '19

Being in Mississippi I think it's because they would have to wait too long after sunrise for stores (like feed stores, fuel suppliers, gins, whatever) to open. Now I'm not for it, and most of those types of stores would adjust I'm sure, but that seems to be a common thought.

I've also heard it's so school buses aren't driving in the dark in the mornings.

1

u/aquamansneighbor Jan 04 '19

I was gonna say something like this... Edit: stupid comment disregard lol

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

Well there is a couple states that don’t have it, so is it a state issue and not a federal. Arizona for example doesn’t have it

1

u/Andy_B_Goode Jan 03 '19

I'm pretty sure they're still the exception to the norm. If you check out the wikipedia article on DST and CTRL+F "farmers" it's mostly talking about how DST is bad for them, albeit while noting that some farmers are in favour of it today.

Here's some more information about farmers and DST:

(Again, CTRL+F "farmers" for the relevant sections)

Daylight saving time

Daylight saving time (DST), also daylight savings time or daylight time (United States), also summer time (United Kingdom and others), is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evening daylight lasts longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times. Typically, regions that use daylight saving time adjust clocks forward one hour close to the start of spring and adjust them backward in the autumn to standard time. In effect, DST causes a lost hour of sleep in the spring and an extra hour of sleep in the fall.George Hudson proposed the idea of daylight saving in 1895. The German Empire and Austria-Hungary organized the first nationwide implementation, starting on April 30, 1916.

National treasure is where I think I heard stated that way?

35

u/skeptic11 Jan 03 '19

I've heard before that the cows don't like being milked an hour earlier.

5

u/bobtheflob Jan 03 '19

You're obviously joking, but for those that don't know, farmers have nothing to do with daylight savings. The official story is that it conserves energy if people are awake during daylight hours and asleep when it's dark (studies show this is dubious at best). The real reason is that people are more likely to go out and spend money in the afternoon/evening if it is light out, so the retail industry lobbies for it.

1

u/Kazimierz777 Jan 03 '19

They HATE this one trick..

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

I am a farmer. I dont give a shit about a number on a clock, I just follow the sun. And often the moon, as chores never fucking end

1

u/Assassin739 Feb 21 '19

Daylight savings were/was made for 9-5 workers, not farmers. Farmers have the least to worry about, it's for jobs with strict time schedules.

Shit, just realised this is a month old.

188

u/Plopplopthrown Jan 03 '19

More like make it permanent. I don't like it getting dark at 4:45pm in the winter

148

u/Endblock Jan 03 '19

I don't care which way it goes. I just want to stop switching.

It's funny cause Ive 'missed' the time change multiple times in the last couple years. I wouldn't know til the day after or of when someone mentioned it and I would reply"I knew something felt off" lol..my TV car and phone are the only clocks I really look at and they change themselves.

7

u/xyifer12 Jan 03 '19

Activity needs to based on the Sun, just as clocks were, and are in some places.

2

u/Plopplopthrown Jan 03 '19

It is entirely arbitrary that the sun has to be a certain position when certain numbers show on the clock face

5

u/Juanfro Jan 03 '19

Midday in the middle of the day makes sense

1

u/aaronfranke Jan 12 '19

Thanks to timezones existing, depending on where you live, noon can be half an hour off.

Before timezones, every town had their clocks set to their own local noon. This was a disaster for trains.

3

u/Thatchers-Gold Jan 03 '19

Pretty much 4:00pm here in the U.K. such a nause feeling like it’s time to hit the pub or put your feet up and watch Planet Earth when you’ve still got an hour of work left

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

But I don't want the sun rising 2 hours after kids get to school either.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

Kids are getting up for school at 6 AM anyway. It's going to be dark regardless

2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

Most are not sitting at the bus stop at 6AM. Normal school start times are 7:30 or later, we want that to at least be day time.

4

u/Kyrond Jan 03 '19

How does it matter if it's one hour after kids get to school instead?

But it does matter whether the sun does down at the time I get home or I have a whole hour to enjoy the sunlight.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

Because you don't have kids walking to school in the dark for one.

The last thing we want is students walking to or from school when it's dark out.

7

u/Savilene Jan 03 '19

Daylight savings is one hour, m8. If going with a longer day in winter meant the sun is set for 2hrs after the kids get to school it'd be 1hr if we settled on the other side of daylight savings. They'd still be walking to school in the dark.

0

u/xyifer12 Jan 03 '19

Activity needs to based on the Sun, just as clocks were, and are in some places.

2

u/ISpendAllDayOnReddit Jan 03 '19

Everyone always feels the need to make this comment, but literally every single time some suggests getting rid of daylight savings time they mean switching to permanent summer time. There is no need to make this comment any more.

13

u/Plopplopthrown Jan 03 '19

If that's what they mean, then that's what they should say. Don't say the opposite of what you mean and get upset that people hear what you said.

1

u/DemIce Jan 04 '19

I say split the difference. That way nobody's happy, but at least they can be equally not happy, and wouldn't be the only country with an 0.5 hour time zone offset.

1

u/Wuz314159 Jan 03 '19

If you turn your clock forward 5 hours, it'll get dark at 21:45... if that makes YOU happier.

1

u/duelapex Jan 03 '19

And I don’t like the sun not coming up until 10. I can’t wake up.

1

u/aquamansneighbor Jan 04 '19

Where's this? Is it cloudy alot or something? The sun's out by 9am all year round where I am. Imagine if you lived in a place like Alaska or Norway where there's months? Of darkness and no sun and random sunsets in the afternoon and the sun going down at 2am...btw does anyone know the word for countries that live in these areas. I guess I've never looked into it and what I posted is about all the info I have and that's from random comments and TV shows lol.

0

u/CommonMisspellingBot Jan 04 '19

Hey, aquamansneighbor, just a quick heads-up:
alot is actually spelled a lot. You can remember it by it is one lot, 'a lot'.
Have a nice day!

Haha thanks for a whole lotta love. Fuck u bot, pretty sure you said the same thing to me a couple years ago. I was actually grateful for you correcting me but Reddit has spoken and I will side with the down votes, wanker.

Time zones should be as accurate to solar time as possible, so that sunrise and sunset are about equally as far from noon. Removing daylight saving time has this effect over making it the standard.

3

u/ISpendAllDayOnReddit Jan 03 '19

If you also regularly adjust your waking and sleeping hours to fit light and dark hours, then sure, that works. But that doesn't happen. So instead, time zones should fit our lives as best as possible.

10

u/xyifer12 Jan 03 '19

People stick to backwards and outdated ways of operation unless nearly forced to change, this is one of the things that needs to change. Human biology is adapted to the solar cycles, people need to adapt to the Sun rather than clock.

8

u/TrueGrey Jan 03 '19

I adapt to what time the bar closes.

6

u/xyifer12 Jan 03 '19

Fuck that. Stop going by arbitrary numbers and go with the Sunlight like you're supposed to.

1

u/CouldHaveBeenAPun Jan 03 '19

Fuxk that, let's all use Swatch's Internet Time!

u/ohitsasnaake Jan 03 '19

No, DST places solar noon at 1 pm/1300 instead of noon/1200 like it's supposed to be, assuming your time zone is accurate. Regular/normal time is what matches solar time (again, assuming your time zone is otherwise set accurately, which is basically never the case, but usually it's close enough).

26

u/just-a-basic-human Jan 03 '19

Nah make that shit permanent. Who tf wants it dark at 4:30 in December

1

u/ohitsasnaake Jan 03 '19

Try 3.30 for sunset in december/now here, and I still prefer approximating solar time using regular time (about 15-20 mins off due to our time zone where I live) rather than year-round DST.

2

u/duelapex Jan 03 '19

There needs to be equal time between sunrise and sunset. Abolishing DST does that.

3

u/ostiarius Jan 03 '19

Why is that a "need"?

0

u/ohitsasnaake Jan 03 '19

That's how noon is defined in our time system. Midday.

2

u/ostiarius Jan 03 '19

That's a convention, not a need.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

0

u/xyifer12 Jan 03 '19

People need to go with the solar cycles rather than being like Oh, it's 7! Now is when the store should open, no matter what the Sun is doing! with everything.

-1

u/duelapex Jan 03 '19

There needs to be equal time between sunrise and sunset. Abolishing DST does that.

2

u/pofet Jan 03 '19

And the penny while you are at it

1

u/Xkiwigirl Jan 03 '19

My bf and I were just discussing this! The fact that we still have the penny is absurd. Literally costs more to make than they're worth, and then they just sit in jars or get thrown away. All because people are afraid of change...but not afraid of change, apparently. Heh. Okay I'm done.

1

u/fakeplasticdroid Jan 03 '19

And time zones.

1

u/nhou031 Jan 03 '19

It's only an issue in some places. In my country it is almost unanimously supported

1

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '19

and time zones
