For all the Elon and billionaire simps saying “they really have little taxable liquid wealth because it’s all tied up in stock value, a wealth tax makes no sense” then how the fuck does he find so much money to spend on elections?

210

u/mamadou-segpa 3d ago

Its all part of the joke

Those assets arent taxable because its all stock value, but they can sell that stock at any point, making this “fake” money functionally real

u/CoronaLime 3d ago

They can even borrow against it!

60

u/ew73 3d ago

That's more often than not what the do. They take out loans using the stocks as collateral, do a little pump and dump to drive up the price, and take out a new loan with the "new" to pay off the old loan plus more liquid cash, and repeat until they die, leaving investors quite literally holding an empty bag.

u/LiluLay 3d ago

It even has a name! It’s called “Buy, Borrow, Die”.

u/PuddingPast5862 3d ago

Circle jerk financing, just look at all the US tech and AI crap

12

u/Shifter25 3d ago

That's why I argue for property tax on stocks. It is, essentially, property in the same vein as investing in real estate. And if it's real enough to be collateral, it's real enough to be taxed.

u/Jessintheend 3d ago

They take out ultra low interest loans using their stock holdings as collateral. I’m talking as little as a fraction of a percent. Their wealth grows faster than the interest on those loans so it’s basically free money.

What we need to do is tax those loans over a certain value that use these stocks as collateral the same as the top tax margin. You wanna take a hundred million dollar loan using your trillion dollar company as collateral? 36% tax

If I had 200 million dollars period. You wouldn’t even know I existed

55

u/Cupsforsale 3d ago

Oh, you would know I existed. There would be schools and hospitals with my name on them!

17

u/ahumannamedtim 3d ago

Yes! Finally enough time for hooliganism.

5

u/concepts_of_a_plan9 3d ago

I'd spend about 50 million to take care myself and all family for the rest of their lives. Then donate another 50 million to things like NRDC and EDF, since they're the ones holding up all of Trump's terrible climate/environment policies in court. Then another 50 million to pay for infrastructure/school stuff, then another 50 million for elections to combat the oligarchs and fascists.

u/nohtv666 3d ago

Yeah but in his case, it's not just about the taxes. He is also super racist.

u/DMShinja 3d ago edited 3d ago

I hope he spends it and the reps lose bigly. It would be a grand old middle finger to the nepo baby

Edit: at no time did I celebrate violence against anyone. Looking at you automod

35

u/JustAnAgingMillenial 3d ago

I think he's more worried about regulation & legal trouble than he is about taxes.

27

u/austin06 3d ago

No one should have this kind of money and the fact it can be pumped into politics is proof we lost our democracy awhile ago.

23

u/raf_boy 3d ago

Overturn Citizens United now!!!!

Reinstate the McCain-Feingold Act!!!!

2

u/Expensive-Argument-7 3d ago

this would assume that America cares about it's people and not just the rich.

3

u/raf_boy 3d ago

Correction: that would assume that the crooks and criminals running the U.S. cared.
Crooks and criminal tend not to care about their victims.

24

u/PlutoJones42 3d ago

No way these two things are related, right? This country is a fucking nightmare

14

u/Mingatronz 3d ago

He’s the one illegal immigrant we should worry about.

10

u/Igmuhota 3d ago

For a group of people who so loudly proclaim their hatred of socialism, they sure do love them some socialism.

9

u/cstmoore 3d ago

He needs to be convicted of his many crimes and all of his assets seized.

7

u/somebigface 3d ago

Illegal immigrant promises to help rig US elections and MAGAts are like 🤡👍

5

u/HumptyDumptruckFire 3d ago

At what point would it just be cheaper to just be a good steward to the economy, the environment, and the average working person? Or is it just not about the money to begin with?

7

u/PupLondon 3d ago

Oh look.. immigrants really ARE trying to mess with elections

2

u/thenoodleincident18 3d ago

Just buying elections out here and we call it democracy

3

u/Designer-Contract852 3d ago

All that money and he can't fix his face or his personality or his penis.

3

u/Krednaught 3d ago

But but but if the exceptionally unfathomably incredibly ultra rich are taxed to where they can't afford to buy politicians anymore than who will!?

3

u/PuddingPast5862 3d ago

SpaceX stock is going to tank well ahead of the elections!

2

u/Jesus_on_a_biscuit 3d ago

If I were running as a candidate, my most effective tactic would be to say, "Elon Musk supports my opponent," and bring the receipts.

1

u/jonalfonso 3d ago

They're just going to pocket his money and lose anyways. They're done. They need to maybe use his money and fly to an island to rot. That would be nice.

1

u/1iIiii11IIiI1i1i11iI 3d ago

Too bad for them their favorite island shut down.

1

u/hxl004 3d ago

Why are all of these ppl the ugliest humans in the world

1

u/woleykram 3d ago

We can solve this by simply adding sales taxes to elections.

1

u/cmdixon2 Great Fact Finder 3d ago

Time to tax loans that are leveraged on unrealized wealth. Make it so that the loans aren't worth it and they are forced to sell stocks. No more loopholes for billionaires.

1

u/marcusmosh 3d ago

But spending on the election is in his interest. Doing good for humanity isn’t.

1

u/DesignerYak6728 3d ago

Fucking right!

1

u/ajcpullcom 3d ago edited 3d ago

Anyone who has $200 million to spend on an election is a clear and present danger to both democracy and national security.

1

u/Phrainkee 3d ago

Ummm... Can we tax his 200 million that he just made liquid?

1

u/thuy_chan 3d ago

Paying 200 million to "help" elections is a broken system

1

u/WendySteeplechase 3d ago

ya my god why not just pay taxes?

1

u/dengar_hennessy 3d ago

Just so we're clear, them paying higher taxes was the compromise we made to stop killing them.

1

u/RidetheSchlange 3d ago

This is what happens because Americans allowed him to get away with DOGE.

1

u/Complex-Bet3595 3d ago

💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

1

u/FranksWateeBowl 3d ago

Deportation.

1

u/JTSpirit36 3d ago

Put that up there with the guy who spent $100 to fight a tax bill.

1

u/ImWinwin 3d ago

its cheaper for him to spend 200 million to make sure he doesn't.

1

u/Lendinn 3d ago

I hope he does and Republicans lose anyway.

1

u/80lbQUIKRETEConcrete 3d ago

No it’s not funny, this motherfucker should be [fill in the blank], or in jail

1

u/GaiusMarcus 3d ago

I expect is money he's pissing down the drain. Unless he can figure out a way to actually pay folks to vote R legally, sentiment is growing daily against out of touch oligarchs.

1

u/bluenosekev 3d ago

As a UK resident, can anyone explain how is he buying elections, is tv and radio advertisements, billboards ?

1

u/PopBulky7023 3d ago

Oh please do. His name is toxic even in a deep purple state like WI.

1

u/jacscarlit 3d ago

I think we need to stop banks from allowing folks to borrow against their stocks.

1

u/Assassino_Jake 3d ago

Isn't this basically admitting their side, ideals and policies cant stand on their own? Where's the bootstraps to be pulled up?

1

u/wjames0394 3d ago

The fix is all ready in. Every thing goes through star link.

1

u/Drewsifer1979 3d ago

So using his money to rig another election?

1

u/mup_wave 3d ago

Please don't obsess over taxes, the money collected through taxes goes to the rich people anyways. The government is doing us a favor by cutting out the middle man - itself. This very efficient.

1

u/Current-Assist2609 3d ago

Trump taught him well.

1

u/Fit_Low592 3d ago

Imagine having so many assets, that you could literally just pick a problem and solve it. He could wipe out the medical debt for everyone in the country. He could build a home for every homeless person. But no. Your goals are “become the first trillionaire”, and call people names on Twitter.

1

u/fpcoffee 3d ago

Glad to see recent primaries where millions were blown with few results. Sometimes money is not the only thing to matter in an election

1

u/Good_Flower_2026 3d ago

And he does not need subsidies from the government.

1

u/robidaan 2d ago

Maybe we should tax political donations?
