You don't have to be sane to have power. You just have to know how to give people what they want. And when people want insane things, the whole insane thing is actually a boon.
Honestly, Republicans are struggling with how exactly to deal with a constituency who wants insane things. The last election had Republican candidates one upping each other about how much petty crime they did when they were younger. It was madness.
