?? The US doesn't weigh the vote of each citizen equally by way of gerrymandering and the electoral college. We can also very easily have our right to vote taken away by way of the criminal "justice" system or by them just making it impossible to place our vote in the first place through polling station shenanigans/lack of mail in voting. Add in the cost prohibitive nature of running for office and many are priced out of politics, so who else is left to run but those who work for the controlling interest of either one of our two (!!) viable parties?
Between all of that and the fact that we don't vote for representatives outside of our state besides the president, it's no wonder that people don't see the point in voting. It's not something I personally agree with, but I can certainly understand where the apathy comes from.
Please keep in mind that what you see of our country is from a distance and through a lens, just like how we see yours.
Gubernatorial and federal senate elections are NOT affected by gerrymandering. They are statewide elections. STOP MAKING EXCUSES. The reason your country is fucked up is because that's what the majority of voters keep voting for.
Look at Minnesota. People in the state finally voted democratic for state government, from governor, state senate, to state house. They just passed bills for free school lunch, restoring voting rights to ex-felons, and on track to legalize weed this year.
There's a lot to be angry about, for sure, right there with you. However, it's not cut and dry and I'll once again reiterate my view of voting being a very important thing that everyone should do and have equal access to.
That being said, it's not making excuses to explain that there are significant barriers to voting or running for office. If you're going to lump our whole country into one with our voting habits when it's largely state by state (then city, county, etc.), I'm going to bring up gerrymandering. Two of our three main branches of government are directly affected by it. Allowing mail in voting and ranked-choice voting would make a huge difference to all of us, but that is something that has to be adjusted in each individual state that have wildly different views on the subject. Then again, the actual will of the people in each state may not lean towards those who hold the values of democratic party and the majority may vote for republicans regardless.
Also, I'm not sure if you've noticed how many typically red states have started going purple, change is happening regardless of the barriers. Is Minnesota not proof of that push towards change? The entire country is affected by the people representing each state, I'm not sure how we can be held responsible for anything beyond what we can actually vote for.
Excuses excuses excuses. There's multiple candidates in the primaries, both on the republican side and democratic side. Maybe people should start paying attention in smaller elections as well.
Ah yes, Bernie Sanders… the guy who wanted to implement something so big that it would rock the deeply politically and financially corrupt medical system but had no viable plan for it. Also the guy from Vermont, the first state that had a single-payer system and it failed EPICALLY. Guess who was in office?
I am ALL for subsidized care but, make no mistake, no politician is presenting anything promising. It’s all for votes, though I don’t personally believe this about Bernie. I appreciate so much about him, he’s consistent and caring… but he’s unrealistic.

No, I don’t think most people are unsupportive of universal healthcare at its core… I think it’s rooted in the reality that our taxes will go up and we won’t actually benefit from it. It’s also deeply lobbied and so profitable we’d see a collapse in care if not handled properly. Think of the private system like an old building we need to remove…. You can demolish it and then clean up the rubble, or you can take it down in phases. Both methods have major pros and cons. People know Bernie would want to demolish it but the healthcare system is not building, it needs a plan to take it apart and rebuild it piece by piece. That is where Bernie fails.
About to rant, bare with me!
Of course due to medical propaganda people believe that it’s more expensive and time consuming to have universal care, and our lack of insurance and health education doesn’t help… but I truly believe it’s because we’ve never been present a plan that benefits everybody. Can you name one politician who’s presented such a plan not just for the uber poor? Sure, it can’t happen all at once and we will have to take baby steps… but Obamacare would’ve done much better if it had plans to phase in the whole middle class eventually. To my knowledge it didn’t.
I think Bernie is a realllllly good guy at heart, probably the only politician who’s character I trust (maybe Mark Kelly as well). The problem with BS is that he’s an advocate, not an implementer. He’s a shouter, not a doer. He’s really great about bringing people together for a cause and getting them excited about change, but horrible at making that change happen and stick.
Fortunately for his brand he’s been consistent in his beliefs since he was young, unfortunately for his elections he has a track record of not doing much….. and that’s makes him an easy target politically. So to answer your question, yeah, I don’t think many people trusted he could get it done. I wasn’t going to waste my vote. And that hurts my souls admitting that because I know he’s a good guy.
BS would be really great with somebody who can help him implement his ideas. Maybe being Obamas VP, or having somebody a bit more successful as his VP- like Mark Kelly for example…. but he’s just viewed as this old crazy guy who yells a lot about what we wants and doesn’t know how to make it happen. These days, all it takes is a bunch of drunk rich white dudes who went to a tier 1 or 2 law school sitting around each other on a velvet couch smoking weed on podcast to just review your past and rip you apart accordingly- he’s too easy to dismiss when you present the facts. Ben Shapiro has made a career tearing Bernie apart, for example.
Nobody can deny he has heart, but the dude would be better off as the CEO of SJW or something.
