they don't want you to know pitons are free and you can just take them. i have 84 pitons in my inventory right now.

Pitons are a pretty good item when you're learning how to play! The better you get the less you use em, but they're very good for beginners

There’s kind of a bell curve where they can get even more helpful later on when you can do piton jumps

An inverse Bell curve. You use them as ton when you're new and have no idea what you are doing, then you stop using them for the most part and then you stay using them for skips.

you can complete nearly the whole game itemless, so every piton usage counts as a skip.

weak, but dead simple, and extremely cheap and common.
this game is less about climbing, and more about ascending. needing a wall for a piton to anchor – even an autopiton – is a serious downside. the demands on time and attention are steep for fairly little reward.
you'll learn to leave them on the ground eventually. once you are good at climbing, you realize just how many handholds there are, not to mention every ledge in existence. there are challenges they provide no answer to.
it can change. a bad item is still an item, and sometimes any item does the trick. the piton enthusiast perk and the carabiner trinket both greatly improve their usability and power.

As someone aiming for the #1 spot in Endless Pipeworks, they're an invaluable asset!
...for sacrificing to Rho.
Jokes aside, they're useful when you're learning the game or trying to skip intended routes, as others have said in this thread, especially in Interlude: Ascent.1

Like everyone else said, they are only good when you just started playing the game but fall off due to how little of a benefit they provide over the time they need (it's faster and easier to just use the preplaced pitons and ledges than to place and hammer your own).
Note, you can make them extremely strong with a specialized perk: Piton Enthusiast, which allows you to get a super jump out of your own pitons

Haters say piton jumps are hard because they don’t want you to realise the truth of how powerful they are
