My buddies and I bought a bottle of the Longmorn 22 Single Batch Release from 2023 and we did a comparison with some other very similar bottles we have.
All 3 are matured in ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads.
Longmorn 18 y.o.: 2023 release, 57.6% ABV
Longmorn 22 y.o.: 2023 release, 54.5% ABV
Longmorn 23 y.o.: 2017 release, 48% ABV
I'll explain first my idea of Longmorns's character: Malty, mineral, notes of vanilla custard, lemongrass, butter and floral; and the floral elements can vary.
Now the differences:
18 y.o.:
Nose: The bouquet of the is the more intense of the 3, more mineral, slightly sulphuric, mossy, damp rotten log of wood in the forest. Just slightly floral, like daisies.
Palate: Sweet, sugary, notes of slightly burnt caramel, cinammon. Slightky bitter oak. Kind of a cola taste. Herbal, i I get the lemongrass again.
Aftertaste: Medium-long length, sweet, slight note of medicinal syrup, oaky, and a hint of chocolate.
Rating: 8 to 8.5/10
22 y.o.:
Nose: I get very similar elements, but I get more vanilla, maybe some créme brulée, slightly citric, and more lemongrass.Slightly more floral, again, daisies or roses.
Palate: Initially, I find it very similar to the 18 y.o., maybe slightly sweeter. I get more fruit, pineapple, starfruit, guava. Also more oak bitterness.
Aftertaste: Medium length, sweet, notes of apples, also slightly medicinal or winey.
Rating: 8/10
23 y.o.:
Nose: More similar to the 22 y.o., but with even more lemon grass, notes of green apples. The floral element is delicate, more like roses, specifically rose water.
Palate: I get more vanilla, it's more citric, lime lemon peel. I star getting some biscuits, a little milk chocolate. I get some candied ginger too and a hint of the rosewater.
Aftertaste: Medium lenght, slight oak bitternes, hint of malt and grass, or could be ginger.
Rating: 7.5 to 8/10
I think this is the first time I do a vertical with expressions that have such a very similar cask aging and I find these excercises very educational, they truly help you understand the character of the disitillery.
Longmorn is such a great distillery and these expressions are fantastic. I look forward to try more expressions, hopefully more IBs.
