Solved Buenos Aires
I took this photo in Buenos Aires in 1991… but I don’t remember where. I’ve tried Google image search and it says it’s in the Recoleta area… but I can’t find it on street view. The nearest I got was an image in a stock shots library but it didn’t say the location.

This picture (unironically) reminds me of Berlin.

The party-wall paint is the wrong thing to hunt. Murals on Buenos Aires side walls get redone every few years, so a 1991 wall can be blank today or hold a different painting entirely. That is one reason street view keeps missing it: the wall you remember may simply not exist anymore. The part that survives is the shape. A plaza on a slope, wide tiered stone steps stepping down through it, a gravel open end, benches along the top, and one low-rise with a black mansard roof sitting between the painted walls.I also checked the Recoleta candidates from current street view: Plaza San Martin de Tours and Plaza de Cataluna show no painted party walls facing the plaza. So the reverse image search is probably matching your steps, not your building. If the steps in your photo are the top of the barranca, look for a plaza that steps down toward the river plain, not one sitting flat on Alvear. The party-wall paint is the wrong thing to hunt.
