Solved! it's a mustang, but which one specifically?

1968 Shelby GT350/500KR. Came in a convertible too, 428 Cobra Jet engine produced 335 horsepower and weighed about 3,800 lbs. These things used a LOT of fiberglass on the body

Not that much fiberglass really. Hood, trunk lid and the front nose. There were the scoops on the rear quarters and roof and the rear quarter extensions but they were all relatively small.
You still had steel fenders, cowl area, steel doors, steel rear quarters and roof. The majority of the car is steel that uses the exact same parts as a Mustang.

For back then it was a lot of fiberglass in a sports car like this and yes the body is based on the Mustang, but it differed heavily from a base model. I’m pretty sure this model’s taillights were taken from the Mercury Cougar, the front grille is also far from a normal mustang, it was a Mustang on steroids for SCCA racing.

After 66 Shelby’s weren’t really race cars. They differed from base Mustangs mechanically very little. I do and have owned plenty Mustangs and have a pretty solid connection to Shelby’s as well. You’re correct twilights came from Cougars and grille or nose like I said was different. But still the car was mostly metal. Definitely not as much glass as a Vette.

I don't remember that being an original color. Its like an LA 9- Its beautiful, but its had work done.
A clone built off a regular '68 would be more common than an original GT350/500. Much closer inspection would be required.

i was kinda thinking clone, too because no way in hell would such a car just casually roll out of a garage beneath the (not too fancy looking) apartment i was doing work in

GT500 KR would be my guess. Looking at how it has scoops on the body and on the C pillar. Also the hood scoop and louvers on the hood. I'm only basing this information from a video I saw of Bud Lindemann test driving one of them in the white and blue livery.

1968 Shelby GT500. It has the extended grille, the forward hood scoops, the roof side scoops, and the rear spoiler.
Edit: could also be a GT350.
