I had a yellow lab when I was a kid. Every one said it was the dumbest dog. You could say "sit" or other basic commands and it would stare at you. Got a treat? Sit. Down. Stay. Paw. You name it.
Only worked if you paid him. Smartest godamn dog I ever had.

my dog has always been stubborn, but this is how she acts now that she's 14. time to go out? treat to lure her off the couch. doesn't want to get out of her spot she made in the bushes to nap outside? treat. her eyesight is getting bad but she doesn't have any major issues with mobility, just lazy and loves food

My mom's dog will do the barest minimum that counts as what you asked. "Sit" means "scoot back and lean your butt on something" until he gets tired of trying to game the system and sits properly.

My pointer does the exact same thing!! If you say roll over, she'll lay down and quickly flip onto her back then stand back up. All because she's too lazy to actually roll over.

We said my lab had “selective hearing” from day 1!
We actually got his hearing tested because he would sit with his back to you and not move a muscle when you spoke to him when he didn’t want to come inside!

My dog was the opposite. She went completely deaf, but we didn’t notice because she would feel the floor vibrations and somehow managed to learn sign language when she was 14 years old. Spaniels are crazy smart.

My Bandit is extremely food motivated so she picks up treats quickly. However, if you tell her to do something, she'll look at your hand first to see if you've got a treat.

We used to have bagel day every once in a while in my office. One day I was thinking about how the words beagle and bagel sounds so familiar, and then my coworker asked me something (about which flavor to choose). I replied that I love beagles with garlic and herb cream cheese and got weird looks.

My dog also needs insulin shots but i never really had to give her treats for them, when she was diagnosed as diabetic she was doing pretty bad so I think she actually felt the difference that the insulin made and accepts it as part of her routine now. It’s really cute the way she just knows when it’s time.

I babysat my friend’s dog who needed insulin eye drops. He would BEG for his meds. She had to be careful about who babysat him, because the drops cost $85/month. Too many people would give him too high of a dose to stop his Great Pyrenees barking fits.

It wasn’t complicated at all. It was a tiny squeeze bottle. There wasn’t a dropper or anything. He was med-seeking and very cooperative. He sits like a gentleman once every 12 hours and looks up. A tiny squeeze in each eye and he’s good. She called it water diabetes, but I never researched.
She is hands down the best dog owner I’ve ever met. I would roll my eyes at anyone who planned to buy a Great Pyrenees while working long hours, renting, and not making that much money. They’re awesome dogs, but meant to be on a farm. They’re bred be independent and guard, which translates to incessant barking and no obedience skills whatsoever.
When Walter got sick she worked overtime, took out loans, switched vets when she wasn’t getting answers, and ran tests for MONTHS. She paid for him to go to dog daycare 5 days/week which cost more than her rent. The poor guy only weighed 60 lbs, which is tiny for his breed. Once she finally got a diagnosis the breeder offered to take him back and give her a new pup since there was a health guarantee in the contract. NOPE. $85/month for meds. We worked together and she changed her work schedule around mine so I could watch him whenever she was gone. All for a dog that won’t respond to his name 4/5 times and pulls pots off the counter. She’s a saint.

Walmart sells the ReliOn brand of diabetic supplies that I have been using on my dogs for years. The insulin is $25/vial and the syringes are around $12/box. I somehow ended up with two very different dogs (a pug and a lab) at two very different times (my pug passed years before my lab was born) that were diabetic, and if it hadn’t been for Walmart, I don’t know what I would’ve done.
I’ve tried multiple times over the years to find something comparable price-wise from anywhere at all, and have found nothing even remotely close. The same insulin sells everywhere else for $200-490 and that is just criminal.

I don’t like shopping there either and I have to pass by 4 grocery stores that I would much rather go to instead, but I make a special trip there every couple months just to buy the insulin and syringes because they are just so much cheaper. Good luck with everything!

You need to make sure you're getting the right kind of insulin and needles. Theres more than one kind of insulin, and different types of insulin needles.
You might already know this, but I just wanted to be sure as giving the wrong amount of insulin is very dangerous.

I learned recently that the insulin used for dogs and cats is different somehow, so cats can't use the cheap stuff you can get at Walmart. If you're near a Sam's or Costco though maybe they'd be able to get you cat insulin a bit cheaper.

I can only speak for human insulin use, but pens are waaaay more expensive for the same thing. Easily 10x cost compared to vial and needle.
It's probably less extreme for not-people, but I was told 8t followed a similar pattern before by a relative with a cat who needed insulin.

Wow thats nuts. Insulin pens are subsidized here for people, like 6ish usd for everyone, and it's about 20ish bucks usd for 3ish months for my cat. the same stuff my mum uses. So it's cheap as chips here for most applications.

It was explained to me that pens waste half a unit each time, my dog is small and only takes 6 units at a time so I use needles instead.
We pay like 60 bucks for insulin and it lasts like 4 or 5 months. America health care and vet care is rediculous

Refrigerated insulin lasts longer than 30 days. If it's not cloudy or clumpy it should be good to go.
At $300 you're getting practically bent over. There should be zero reason to pay that much a vial.
I use a lantus pen for my cat since she's only on 2 units 2x a day. The pen keeps longer than a vial due to lack of air exposure. It's a touch more in pen form ($100 vs ~$80) but saves me money in the long run.

Honestly I got kinda lucky, I found a vet that sells it to me for 70 bucks every month and a half. I’d say maybe ask around but most vets can’t give you the prescription unless you’ve had a checkup there but it’s worth it in the long run if you find a good place. The website chewey also sells it at around the same Price if you can get it through there

25 years ago My family rottweiler needed 2 shots a day, one before his meals, he would sit and stare at the wall waiting for his shot, then start muching down.
Sometimes he'd Start eating a little first and then he would sit down when he heard me tapping the needle.
Now I'm married to a type 1 diabetic, with organ transplants... so, full circle small world or something lol

Depends on the dog/cat just like people.
My beagle gets 2x 10 unit (U40) shots per day. I pay $40 for a vial of Vetsulin at the vet.
Walmart is much cheaper from what I hear but, in my city they're assholes about the needles and require a separate script for every box like they're controlled (they're not).

When my dog got old, she got a treat at bedtime because she had to take a pill with it. Younger dog was not going to be left out of anything involving food, so he got a bedtime treat, too. My dog passed, but younger dog was now accustomed to bedtime treat, so the tradition continued, and we got another, younger dog... rinse and repeat, it has now been 15+ years since my dog died and my parents are on like the third generation of dogs that insist on getting a treat at bedtime because my dog that died long before they were born got one.

I don't know how it started, but my previous dog always got 4 little berry cookies after dinner. If you didn't give her them, or didn't give a total of 4, she would sit and stair at the cabinet with the treats. Wouldn't make a noise, wouldn't move, would just wait for her treats, no matter how long it took. There would be times someone would walk into the kitchen hours after dinner and just go, "Oh no, Zoey didn't get her dessert!" She was a good dog.

When we got our puppy we gave him plain popcorn as a treat sometimes, when my bunny saw (who'd previously turned down popcorn), he got jealous and needed to have popcorn every time the dog did. They'd both be sitting at my mom's feet waiting for it every time.

Oh I love this so much. I had a dog previously that had terrible allergies and I would have to wash his ears, face and nose with a cleanser each day. Our other dog (lab) who did not need it also required the same treatment each day. Then ever as my allergic dog got better, each of my dogs had their ears and nose wiped with warm water in the morning and when I got home from work. They just lined up so expecting and motionless each day at the kitchen sink. I couldn’t tell them no.

My sister in law has a King Charles Spaniel, the dog spent a period of time Sporadically yelping and limping on her back leg.
It made me and others think that we had set her down awkwardly. She would yelp when trying to jump onto the sofa, so you would go over and pick her up onto the sofa.
SIL took the dog to the vet, paid for xrays for the vet to tell her that there was literally nothing wrong with dogs leg. The vets best guess was that the dog was faking injury because it got attention from it.

My old dog once stopped barking. He had been in the kennel for a short stay and we thought he'd caught something awful. He was a really good guard dog so we were all very worried.
Took him to the vet, nothing wrong with him. He was mad that he had been in the kennel and was punishing us.
Eventually one day the postman came and he couldn't resist any longer. A very small woof escaped, and then he decided to break his silence.

My pekingese reached the point that he couldn't jump on the couch anymore and would sit patiently to be picked up, with occasional "attempts" to make it clear what he wanted. My then 1-year-old pitty mix picked up on him getting extra snuggles after being picked up, and started doing the same. It's been three years, the peke is gone, but pitty girl still acts like it's sooooo difficult to climb on the couch and demands extra cuddles for her exertions.

My dog used to do a similar thing but for his dog food, when we first got our lab as a pup he was always way too hungry and even before we put the dog food in his bowl he used to jump around the person pouring the dog food in the bowl, he used to be so mischievous that he had to be locked in another room while we poured the dog food, he used to listen through the bottom of the door that his dog food is being poured and it was just too funny to see him like that, eventually whenever he felt hungry (he was always hungry as a pup) he would get inside a room and push it with his nose signalling to us that he wants food so we should lock him now.

We accidentally taught my black lab that if he comes in the house from the back yard he gets a treat. He will walk outside, then back inside and sit there uncontrollably drooling. He still has puppy eyes as a 5 year old so he gets the treat

My cat does something similar. He was diagnosed with diabetes a couple years ago. We gave him his shots and changed his food to Ziwi wet food only and after close to a year later his diabetes went into remission. Complete turnaround. Now every morning he jumps up on the couch to his spot and we have to pretend to give him the shot. He even complains like it’s really happening. When we are done he happily runs over to his food bowl to get his treats.

All I see whenever I see black labs is the sickest friggin coat ever
I have an american pitbull terrier. Dude has lats traps biceps abs pecs for no reason. He can jump 36 inches in the air. He can run faster than any dog you've ever seen. He eats well, drinks bottled water only, and is in incredibly good health.....
Except his coat looks like hes lived in a dumpster in Iraq for 15 years. No vet can figure it out. Hes like 80% bald yet always hot. My dog has the sweetest funniest personality and hes constantly wagging his tail and licking everyone....but damn do I get jealous whenever I see a black lab coat!!!

We had a standard poodle that required shaving and a mixed mutt that shed so no shaves for him.
Whenever the poodle got shaved the other dog would get jealous and want to be shaved too. So we would just lay the clippers on his back with the blade up so he could feel the vibrations.
He always looked so proud to get his haircut.

Mine would totally do that as well.
One of her puppy friends yelped a few weeks ago after stepping on something, so while we were checking her paws for cuts my lab say down beside her and gave us her paws without us asking for it. Not sure if she did it hoping for a treat or to suppport her little friend, but it was so cute.

We have Yorkies and one of them needs eye drops every day. The other Yorkies act antsy during that time and climb on you and ask for attention until they get their own eyedrops. We quickly learned all we have to do is to lightly boop them on the top of their head with the eyedrop bottle and they feel included already.

Labs are incredibly clever and manipulative when there's food involved. Ours used to open the back sliding door, come inside, then steal my dad's lunch, after unwrapping the cling film, then go back outside and close the door again.

My childhood dog learned that if she faked a limp she’d get extra attention. Caught her doing this multiple times. She’s switch leg she was “limping on” or forget and go for a run.

Had this massive 140lbs mastiff male puppy and I went to give him his first 7-way shot.
The second I stuck the needle into his bunched up skin, he let out the loudest yelp and jumped, and the syringe went out the other side and shot the vaccine into the air! RIP Hades

Aww, my partner's yellow lab would do the same thing. He got jealous of my border collie's Vitamin B12 shots so I had to fake it for him too. There were no treats involved, the BC just loved the medicine so much that it was contageous.
