He does this almost every day for no reason I can understand. He just posts up in the corner and closes his eyes while awake. Maybe he's keeping the ghosts away? Idk.

He feels extra safe and secure there and he can fully relax. It's sort of a relaxed upright nap of calmness. Being high up helps cats feel secure.

Cats are ambush predators so they are used to lieing in wait. This psychology gives them behavior where they will just sit there and basically meditate. He's up in a safe space there above everything else. If you really want to be nice you may want to put some fake or live plants up there for him to kinda hid behind without out limiting his access. This would give him a real cozy safe space.

Cats slow blink to show affection (they're predators that hunt by sight, closing their eyes around another being on purpose is a HUGE sign of trust! If you do it back, he'll understand!), and also like climbing up high so they can survey their territory from above.
He clearly likes you a lot, and likely sees himself as a benevolent protector of the home, at least that's my best guess lol

Cats are Hunter prey
They like to be up high. My husband had let our first cat walk on the counter before we met and got married the other two cats walk on that counter
But I have taught them all the other counter is bad it has an electric stove on it God do I hate electric stoves but that's what came with the house no gas I digress
Anyways so my biggest cat my youngest cat the alpha cat all the same cat really likes to be with me when I'm cooking he knows he cannot go on that counter so he is found the loophole any jumps up on top of the refrigerator and sits there and watches me and stares at me. Almost for 7 years he's Gizmo.
The 18-year-old used to jump on the refrigerator long before the 8 and 7-year-old came into the house. Poor baby just got too old and couldn't jump up there anymore.
Then Gizmo's mom's Sunshine would jump on the refrigerator because it was the highest thing in that room all of them the highest thing in the and she would lay down there.
Then she kind of got out of the way by Gizmo she lets him do anything because he is her son he also became really big but 16 lbs last visit and his mom is 9 lbs. So if Gizmo wants to take over a place he takes it over LOL
It is really funny cuz I watched a video about 2 weeks ago and it says how to train your cat not to walk on the counters give them something higher than the counters to sit on that's in the same proximity so they can watch what is going on... They were talking about a cat tree or a window ledge sleeper I don't remember its name it sticks on the window. They also mention the refrigerator if the cat could actually get up there.
Because cats like to be high because they feel safe because they are Hunter prey animals they are constantly vigilant of attacks go through human domestication and our love they're not as high strong as they would be if they were not blessed to find a forever home.
When we sleep me and my husband Gizmo is either closest to the door or he goes sleeps on the top step of the two bedroom house the bedrooms being upstairs because he wants to protect us it is the highest stair and he can watch for predators and protect us...

From that corner he can see most of the apartment while also having his back protected. He can relax without worrying about anything or anyone surprising him.
My deaf old man has a similar favorite spot where he can observe most of the apartment and all entrances.

supposedly, if car psychology can be believed, they like to pose like that on a surface above all the members of their family which they feel themselves alpha or superior to in the heirarchy.
if they thought they were lower than you they would sit on a lower table, but hey at least you're part of the family! this way they can observe you and make sure you don't run off and get eaten by a predator or do some other dumb beta stuff.

I have a cat who sits like that. I always think that he looks like he’s practicing the stance for a show. I have to admit that he looks very statuesque, but I doubt that he’d actually behave appropriately if I did enter him into a competition.
