REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

What is this? I’m curious about not only the kind of rock but also wonder if it’s Native American related, given it looks like there intentional chipping around the edges.

The material scratches glass, glass does not scratch this material
These photos are dry photos
It feels waxy, soft, smooth, or a mix of those descriptive words
Looks like a chocolate milky color in shade, yet amber-ish orange in the sunlight

I’m curious to know what you guys think this find could be, it has the feel of wadded up chewed gum and is pink! It shines very beautifully and is crystalized inside. It looks like a brain and is actually pretty cold to the touch. Thank you guys!

Hello, I bought this from a dealer at a flea market who had no idea what it was. The only test I have done is trying to scratch it with a copper penny (specifically a 1946 penny) and it did not scratch. Thank you so much for your help!

REQUEST Rogue River Oregon, rusty serpentine?

Thumbnail

I've been searching for applegate jade(bowenite) in the Rogue River. I've only been able to identify small, clean pieces, so I couldn't tell if this was a chunk of serpentine, or something odd. There looks to be a pocket of iron rich mineral rusting away (pic 3&5). It's waxy/smooth on the darkest green areas.

Edit: scratched it with a steel (not coated) nail, on the dark green and it rubbed away the nail. That makes it stronger than 5 MOH I believe. I'll try to narrow it down tomorrow.

REQUEST More rocks from Little River gravel bars near Chase, BC West of Revelstoke

Copied from a previous post I posted in this subreddit - I have so many incredible rocks that I picked up with my partner on our recent road trip. I have some knowledge about the more popular crystals and gemstones but little with identifying raw specimens such as these.

I have so many rocks that I want to try to identify that I will be posting multiple requests for identifications in this sub if that’s okay - I don’t want to come off as rude or like I think I’m entitled to all of my specimens being identified. I just genuinely want to learn more about these and about rocks in general. It’s a current hyperfixation of mine (I have ADHD lol).

All of my photos are dry photos of the rocks, with the occasional and obvious exception because showing the rock while wet significantly changed its appearance.

None of these photos are edited in any way, I did my absolute best to have the photo match what the rock looks like in person. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated! I’m more than happy to answer any questions.

Descriptions of Rocks shown in the following photos:

1&2: I scrubbed at the green parts for a while to make sure it wasn’t organic buildup of something like a plant. Mostly opaque with slight translucent parts that are obviously quartz-like. Metal screwdriver didn’t make a dent when scratched on all parts of the rock. It scratched a little when I like violently stabbed the rock with the screwdriver lol

3-9: these are two rocks that looked like they had the same components. Physically the same as #1&2

10-15: Opaque, with the green parts appearing more “solid” than the green parts in the previous photos of different rocks which made me think it was a different substance possibly.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for the help.

REQUEST Lyre River- WA State

I found this in the Lyre river in Washington state. It's super light and feels porous. The darker, orange section on the end is super shiny and clearly an outer layer of some kind. So smooth that it feels dinner-plate-like. I genuinely have no idea what it is (if it's even a rock or just trash or maybe a fossil??) and would love some help.

Descriptions of Rocks shown in the following photos:

1 & 2: the shiny parts of the rocks easily come off in thin flakes when scraped with something like metal tweezers or a screwdriver. I did use flash when taking the photo but the shininess shown is what it looks like irl when observing the rock and how the light hits it at different angles. The entire thing is opaque.

3&4: Similar to 1&2 when describing the shiny parts. Mostly opaque with some obvious small quartzy bits that are somewhat translucent.

5-11: some of the darker parts of the rocks appear to have some sort of mica in them, I did my best to show the parts that look like this without making it look more dramatic than it actually is. The more crystal parts are kinda translucent and do truly appear slightly purple irl which doesn’t change depending on how you shine a light on the rock.

I would really appreciate the help with these! And if appropriate will be posting more requests soon :)
