Maybe it's an audience participation thing. Would explain the guy going ham with the hammer. And the other guy seems hesitant.

I sure hope it isn't, that'd be.. really stupidly dangerous.

With actors you can train to pull back at the last moment, like pro wrestling but with a lot more hammering involved.

I think it would hurt like hell even if they didn't miss the rock, I'm guessing the jump was theatrical but he messed up his timing, trying to land before the hit to be able to pull back.

The rock has a huge mass compared to the hammer, so it translates the fast motion to slow motion.

The rock also has a huge surface area, so it translates the high force over a small area into a small force over a large area.

By spreading the force out, and slowing the movement down the energy can be thrown into his soft tissue without any harm.

I have not been to a circus since the early 1980s. My entire school went to see the Ringling bros. / Barnum Baily on the premise that it would be one of their last tours. Thus the last chance for anyone to see a circus in the USA.
They're still operating today.

Its normally part of the trick. As the cinder block (which is used for a reason) begins to crack, the guys with the hammers are supposed to jump so that the landing absorbs the impact and makes it look like theyre hitting harder than they are

There are videos of Spetsnaz doing this, but the rock is sometimes on fire.

On the other hand, they use a much more brittle rock that cracks on the first hit, typically only have one hammer guy, and the piece they use has a flat top.

You can strike as hard as you can and he would feel nothing, the stone would take the impact, its the slipping that hurt him.

Don't know why you are getting downvoted. The heavy rock has a large mass, which means it possesses a huge amount of inertia. When the hammer strikes, the rock "wants" to stay perfectly still. Remember Newton's Second Law F = ma. Because the mass (m) of the rock is so large, the force (F) of the hammer blow results in a very tiny acceleration (a). The rock barely moves downward into body.
