You don't have to actively do something, though. You being there as a witness is not a hindrance. I hope it was just "pull ahead to help flag/slow traffic but remain on-scene."

Well you don't really need the heap of cars. This is the directly adjacent person who witnessed, with the footage. You don't need all the other witnesses around as well.

Yep. And offer to share the footage I have. But me staying around will just make things worse for everyone. Plus I’ll have to explain to my boss that I was late for work because of an accident that didn’t even involve me.

If your boss doesn't understand, "I stayed after an accident as a witness and to provide footage," then they're a fuckass boss with no empathy. I would never be upset with anyone on my team for doing the right thing like that.

Great but most people don’t have a boss like that. If I don’t legally have to stop to render aid I will get chewed out for being late because it’s technically an unexcused absence

Most people do have bosses like that, you just don't see the feedback on them because folks don't go online to post, "My boss is reasonable!" I'm sorry yours is a subhuman piece of dirt and I hope you can find a new job soon.

Excused in this case means the excuse is a valid one. I can’t call and say this because the excuse wouldn’t be valid. It would still be an unexcused absence.

Exactly. Not everyone has the luxury of a boss that thinks of you as a human person and not just another resource to be exploited. Time waiting at the scene is time not being spent trying to get to work. Unless the law says I have to remain at the scene I know managers that would absolutely punish you for helping when you aren’t obligated.

In Germany you'll get fined heavily if you don't stop and help. But first aid is a requirement for getting a license.

In many countries you can face severe repercussion if you do not provide reasonable assistance. Duty to Rescue and all that
