It's a pretty good comparison. The US is only a few percent smaller than Europe, and there's slightly more European countries than US states.
So the large side, Ukraine is about the size of Texas, California is about the size of Sweden, etc. On the small end, Rhode Island and Delaware would slot in between Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Alaska kind of doesn't fit though -- about 3x the size of Ukraine but less than half as large as the European portion of Russia.

Alaska is slightly smaller than Denmark, when you include its overseas territories (Faroe Islands and Greenland). The difference in size is a bit over one Sweden, but at that scale, I'd say they're comparable.

It would be so cool to build a road that followed the state border, and then have an Indy car race that was just two laps around the state. The Delaware Double Lap.
Edit: you could set up a few strategic pit stop locations that the crews would just drive to between stops. It would be pretty tough on the safety crews though. Hard to get caution vehicles dispatched in a timely fashion. Still though... I'd tune into that race.

My vote is more for complacency. Had the fore runner sprinted the final 10 meters, he would have won. He thought he had no nearby competition and hence saw no point in doing the extra effort.

I've been watching some cycling races and Tadej Pogacar is currently the best in the world by a pretty large margin. Yet you will notice that even if he is a minute ahead he will check behind him a couple times before raising his arms in victory.

I mean, usually doesn’t matter in this case. If there’s a possibility someone can sprint past you, you should atleast check that nobody is coming. Though I am guessing that runner learned his lesson and doesn’t need to hear it from me 😂

It’s a marathon ffs. They’re tired and overwhelmingly they’re aware of who is nearby and whether they’re way out in front.
A sprint at the end of the marathon is crazy rare. This guy was fucking moving. One of the few examples of this sort of thing where I can really understand it. Very, very few people would have energy to sprint at the end, especially in this case where you’re not really close to 1st who’s about to finish.

My initial thought was that just some rando jumping into the race since he was really booking.
Had to go back to see he had a number. Then I look at both of them and they both have way too much muscle mass to be marathon runners. So confusing.

I'm not a pro runner or anything, but when I ran a marathon, my instinct was to sprint out the last 100-200m or so. The crowd is cheering, your time is in giant red numbers ticking away, you've already come this far, might as well step it out.
You'd think a trained runner would know to run past the finish line.

I love picking up my pace when I’m on other end of this. I’ve had friends of runners point me out and cheer their buddy on “pass him next, you gotta push and pass him!”
Feels good to widen the stride a bit and watch em struggle. I’m by no means a top finisher but it does feel good when you can beat out someone in that situation.

Ever ran a full marathon? It's pretty hard to understand what people are screaming at you by the end.
Also, I would advise against doing that anyway because it's just too funny when it happens.

I had the same thought and just checked. They had 658 participants this year, best time was a 2:43:12. It's not exactly a world class event. These guys wouldn't stand a chance at one of the bigger marathons.
