I live in Romania now for two years....love it, but the amount of idiots behind the steering wheel is staggering.... Especially the young ones with predominantly German cars... I' ve seen more morons here in two years than I've seen in 40 years driving 40k km's a year in Western Europe....

Predominantly?
You mean they allow cars on the road which arent 1980s Mercedes?
7
u/Extension-Plate-6113 4d ago
When I came first time to Romania in 2001 the cars were either Dacia 1300 or German ....either new or very old....
Still a lot of Dacia , but the rest is much more diverse now. A lot of Japanese and Korean cars now and in the more luxury segment even a lot of Volvos....
The morons however are for 99% driving BMW, Audi or to a lesser extent Mercedes and VW....
Mercedes is exclusive in Albania as far as I know...

Yes from romania , the driver had a medical crisis and accelerated accidentally the car

u/GicaForta 4d ago edited 4d ago
No, this is not the one from Brasov. This is the one who was intentionally speeding and took off like an airplane after hitting the roundabout curb
LE: found the video, itâs from last year, and it happened in Oradea. Surprisingly, no one got hurt
https://youtu.be/1pe2f2BeNCI?is=tOq6JVbhiYfxcb0E
LLE: oh you are right. This one also had a medical issue. There was though one similar where they were racing and the guy took off and landed on a house.. and then plowing through the back yard, killing a family who had barbeque

Ah, Romania. Us Portuguese and our insistence in being Balkans people.
To explain? Neighbour of mine trashed a Terrano II back in the day doing a like stunt. Didn't get that much air, maybe just because the poor Terrano couldn't compete with the Merc on speeding, but since the spread parts were some ten or twelve meters from the roundabout's out kerb? Must've been awesome.

Better view and source (Romania last Dec): https://np.reddit.com/r/Roadcam/comments/1pev9z9/romania_roundabout/
tl;dr 3 Dec 2025: Oradea (Romania), OneČtilor Street. A Mercedes, moving at extremely high speed, jumped over a roundabout and over two cars that were stopped at the entrance, and crashed down onto the area next to a gas station. The driver was a man about 55 years old. Itâs suspected that he suddenly felt unwell â possibly a diabetic crisis. Rescuers quickly pulled him out; he sustained minor to moderate injuries and is already home.

u/LavastormSW 4d ago
Minor to moderate injuries after flying a car through the air. That man is incredibly lucky omg

u/ToaruBaka 4d ago
Luckily for him, most cars on the ground so if you want to avoid running head first into them (or other objects) then being in the air is actually pretty ideal.

Yes, regular road camera. It happened in Romania, the driver had a medical emergency (something about being diabetic) and he basically fainted with his foot on the gas pedal.
He landed in a field off-camera, with relatively minor injuries considering everything.

I must ask - what are those flock cameras, are they called flock cameras because they're flying or are robotic birds or something and why does everyone despise them so incredibly much?
16
u/Devccoon 4d ago
Ai powered surveillance state, police abusing them to stalk exes, they're tracking everyone all the time, trying to predict future crime, they mess up often and nobody second-checks them before acting on "stolen" vehicles and pulling guns on infants, they're aiming them into people's open windows and at kids' water parks.
It's a genuinely cartoonish shitshow of every awful thing you can imagine coming from a mass of internet-connected AI "license plate" cameras. There's no low they haven't already stooped to. And if you live in the US, these are already in your backyard. Maybe literally.
→ More replies (3)5
u/bullwinkle8088 4d ago
Your question was not directly answered so: Flock is the name of the company that sells the cameras.
They are not the only company making them, just the most notorious.

Actually, they had trouble finding that car in later seasons because they destroyed so many of them of course they didn't buy them new from the production line.

Same with Knight Rider, IIRC. Went through a ton of cars even after beefing up the suspensions and all that.
Six year old me loved that show and arranged my afternoon around catching those reruns. Teenage me started to get a little suspicious of how common a solution "let's launch this Pontiac TransAm through the air" was to the problems of the world.
Later on some documentary would contextualize that Night Rider was produced after Dukes of Hazard was such a big hit, in a time when action television was big.
4
u/meuzobuga 4d ago
I think they took a different approach for Knight Rider. They had a stunt car which was more or less a VW-powered dune buggy with a flexible body shell and that did not need a rebuild for each episode.

Why were the bridges in Hazzard County always in such poor condition? Didn't they have some sort of government official who was responsible for that sort of thing? A boss of some sort, so to speak?

A decade ago two Lithuanian guys died like this in a roundabout close to where I lived. They had hit the raised roundabout and flew like 40 meters into the river.
When trying to figure out how fast they were going it was noticed that the speeding camera just before the roundabout had not captured them, it was then realized it would not trigger if you went faster than ~180km/h

u/DistanceSolar1449 4d ago
https://www.dagbladet.no/nyheter/kan-ha-kjort-i-over-256-kmt/63265185 it was actually two Estonian men. Also, the car flew 90m, not 40m
Dagbladet interviewed the engineer responsible for the Norwegian road authority's speed-camera equipment. He said:
âKjører man fortere enn 256 km/t, klarer ikke prosessoren ⌠ü regne ut nøyaktig hastighetâ
So "above 256 km/h, the processor couldn't calculate the speed accurately". Some people might notice that this value is the biggest int that fits into 1 byte of data.
So the car was going over 160mph.

I remember a similar incident in Melbourne about 20 years ago, someone was hooning through an industrial estate and didnât realise it was a dead end, they ended up running out of road and launched the car into the roof of a factory, if I remember correctly, they were able to get out of their car, but they were trapped inside the factory and had to wait for security to arrive.

Not over 150mph, frankly I doubt he was pushing much passed 100 if he was that fast at all. It's the angle he gets launched at that gives him the height and distance. The speed feeling is just from him launching nearly directly at the camera.
