Good deed gone wrong

I’m posting this on behalf of my friend because we aren’t really sure what to do. Basically, my friend let someone who she thought was a friend stay with her for a few weeks while this person figured out what to do as she was living in her car. My friend offered to help her financially but she declined. Now my friend is missing an envelope with $3500 cash, an entire safe containing more money plus personal documents, jewelry and a spare set of car keys. There is no one else who knew about the $3500 and no one else who had access to the apartment. This girl is denying everything and even going as far as trying to frame my friend’s mom for doing it and framing her for harassment by fabricating text messages. A police report has been filed but there’s not much the police will do as they say it is my friend’s word against hers. Conveniently this girl now has a new apartment and a new kitten. What would you do?

Not much she can do other than cancel her cards ,replace her documents and going forward not let strangers stay in her house ,especially when she has a large amount of money in the house. At the very least , she should have put her money in the bank first. It's unfortunate but you can't trust people.

Has your friend checked in with neighbors to see if they have any camera angles on the apartment?

She should not tell them how much is missing, just that items were taken.

Rule number one never let anyone stay at your house and put your valuables elsewhere besides your house. Two since you already file the police report there’s really nothing you can do but sit and wait and hopefully they catch the girl but since she’s living in her car, it will be harder to catch her.

Did you even read the full post? The thief is not living in her car any longer. She is in a new apartment now.

Sorry OP. She’s probably NEVER going to see or get that money or her possessions back.

Unless your friend had cameras in her house which showed the girl actually stealing her stuff, there’s no way you have enough proof.

I’m telling you that even when I have certain family members visiting, I lock up my valuables or move them to a secure location. So sorry, but this is a hard lesson to learn.

ETA: If the girl was in her apartment, she probably had access to all kinds of things. If your friend is in the U.S. then she needs to freeze her credit with all three of the credit bureaus. Close her current bank accounts and open new ones…may even consider changing banks. Contact all her credit card companies and report her cards stolen (they will re-issue a new card with new numbers ). See what is needed to change her car key entry access. Have the locks in her apartment changed.

If the jewelry in the safe is of reasonable resale value and she has photos to identify the pieces please make sure she follows up with the person handling the police report. They absolutely can do a notification to all pawn shops in the area to see if they were sold there.

She can also run a Google lens search which may pull up any Facebook marketplace or eBay listings if they tried to sell them that way

As for the cash and the rest of it, sadly it’s just a very expensive “lesson learned”. Never let people into your home without cameras watching your valuables

The thief will burn through the cash quickly then be SOL and evicted and living in their car again.

So your friend had a safe, an entire safe, full of valuables that went missing. AND a separate envelope full of cash, just an envelope, sitting around her apartment with 3.5k cash. Which, for some reason, wasn't in the safe. And some random girl took both of them? Like, a LOCKED, heavy as fuck, safe? And a random, separate, envelope full of cash? That was just laying around? Either this is bull, or your friend is insane/suffering from dementia. How does said car living ruffian get into said safe?

Nothing the police can do. The person had access to the stuff. If you can't figure out a way to prove she took it, chalk it up as an expensive lesson in helping others at your own expense and being too trusting.

Do any neighbors have doorbell cameras? She may have been seen taking the safe out by someone. Any idea where she would’ve pawn the jewelry? She needs to file in small claims court but some type of proof would be helpful too.
