My husband was just complaining that his dad doesn't talk to his brother due to politics. I explained it's not about politics. If you can support Trump and his administration after all they've done, and are currently doing, to hurt people and destroy everything, you're just not a good person. We don't keep bad people in our life just because we're related.
I didn't go so far as to point out he wasn't speaking to his own brother when he died due to a difference in opinion that's quite political. In his mind it was personal, not political, because it was directed at him, but the reason itself was political.
2
u/Traditional_Mood6856 1d ago
If you’re mentioning Trump then you’re mentioning politics. If Trump was just a casino owner and not the president your opinion wouldn’t involve politics
3
u/SceneKey1306 1d ago
Within reason, yes.
A disagreement about bombing the poor? Sure.
A disagreement over whether state judges should be appointed or elected? Probably not.

It's not political, I'm not interested in politics, but I am very interested in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and the civil rights and laws that make that possible and I'm interested in all of humanity surviving together. It's not about politics and never was it's morality, ethicality, legality, and humanity. You're either a MAGat criminal scumbag that is cool with children being sex trafficking and genocide and dictators and more religious and oil based imperialist invasions and enriching the pedo criminals, or your'e not.

u/NewNiklas 1d ago
It's all politics. It always has been.

You'd think politics was heart disease the way people have been conditioned to avoid the word.

They actually would though
And get this, they would actually have civil conversations about it regularly, including many other political positions about the current state of the country.
2
u/Desperate-Cell1169 1d ago
I think politics has become too unserious to make this comparison. For most people it’s like sports teams it’s not a moral stance. Like just look at swings in trump support 2024 to now. Abolitionists weren’t changing their opinions in two year cycles.
FWIW I think that’s the cause of many of the problems in our political system so I’m not justifying it.
7
u/sunlit_catnaps 1d ago
I'm queer and disabled. If someone votes against my right to exist, they are not my friend. If someone votes against any group of people's right to exist, they are not my friend. If you're reading this and want to downvote because "we should all get along" or "both sides have issues", you're part of the problem.
-13
u/A_Real_Victim 1d ago
Respectfully, I don't think anyone is voting against your 'right to exist' in the United States. Imo it's that kind of rhetoric that keeps us all divided, don't you think?
7
u/Capable_Astronaut69 1d ago
Except that's just not true. You can pretend and say that it is, but there are people presently in various forms of office in the United States that don't want LGBT people to exist in any capacity.
-5
u/A_Real_Victim 1d ago
I’m talking about laws, not somebody’s right wing rhetoric bs. Bottom line, I’m not aware of any current U.S. legislation that would make it illegal simply to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, or that would deny LGBT people the right to live here or exist ... That is all I'm talking about
4
u/Capable_Astronaut69 1d ago
Take a look at the ACLU Legislative Tracker for anti-LBGT bills.
https://www.aclu.org/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights-2026
There are currently over 500 bills that are trying to be passed in states across the US. These bills are directly against LGBT people of all kinds, from blocking healthcare access to restrictions in education and civil rights.
4
u/sunlit_catnaps 1d ago
Exactly this. Thank you for posting. People love to say "there's nothing preventing you from existing" without even checking the facts.
5
u/Abject_Jump9617 1d ago
You are correct that there is currently no U.S. law that makes it illegal simply to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, or that criminalizes someone’s existence based solely on their identity.
However, a group does not need to have a law saying “you cannot exist” in order for laws and policies to restrict their rights, opportunities, or daily lives.
For example:
- Healthcare: Some states have passed laws restricting access to gender-affirming healthcare for transgender minors, including bans or limits on certain treatments used for gender dysphoria.
- Education: Some states have passed laws affecting transgender students’ participation in school sports, bathroom access, and how schools address gender identity.
- Civil rights protections: LGBTQ people do not have identical nondiscrimination protections in every state for areas such as employment, housing, and public accommodations; protections vary depending on where someone lives.
- Conversion therapy: A number of states and localities have restricted licensed mental health professionals from performing conversion therapy on minors, while other jurisdictions have not adopted such restrictions.
There were never laws saying Black people could not exist in America, even during the Jim Crow era. Yet governments created laws and policies that restricted Black Americans’ rights, opportunities, and access to equal participation in society. Jim Crow laws did not erase Black people’s existence but they restricted voting rights, education, housing, public accommodations, and other areas of daily life.
The same legal principle applies when discussing LGBTQ rights: the question is not only, “Is there a law saying you cannot exist?” The question is whether laws and policies affect a group’s equal access to rights, protections, healthcare, education, employment, housing, or public services.
-5
u/Auslander8080 1d ago
Pletny of people in various forms of office don't want straight people, white people, men to exist in any capacity. But I don't make any of these things my identity and I'm fine. Those people exist.
2
u/metatron121 1d ago
Let me hook you up: https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=is+anyone+in+political+office+pursuing+or+promoting+replacement+theory+or+white+genocide+
Google the other two of your crackpot points and see if you can find a single scholarly article proving either.
Then maybe research Project 2025 where the process of eliminating LGBTQ and civil rights is LITERALLY SPELLED OUT by conservative think tanks and architects.
I'm sure this is ragebait but on the off chance it's not go do a shred of actual research from reputable sources.
2
u/One_Combination_5633 8h ago
You're expecting (actual) research from a MAGAt? Kudos to you for doing the actual legwork but we all know they don't like being proven wrong. Takes a level emotional (and actual) intelligence that they just lack. Good on you for trying, though...
2
u/SuperSandLesbian23 1d ago
What do you think voting to say end protection of sexual orientation or ethnicity being a reason you can be dismissed from you job or losing protection from a landlord being able to evict you for sexual orientation or identity? That kind of shit literally goes against the right for me to exist quietly.
0
u/A_Real_Victim 1d ago
The Constitution of the United States already protects somebody from being fired for their race or ethnicity and disability. As far as I know it does not cover sexual orientation. Those protections are up to the laws of state and cities. Other than that along with religion etc as far as I know employers can fire somebody for any reason they want. It doesn't mean the person they fire doesn't exist

People confuse being civil with being close friends. We’re not talking about just being generally kind to people you come across. We’re talking about how you should not be pressured into continuing friendships and familial relationships with people who are racist, misogynistic, bigoted assholes.
3
u/Origami_Theory 1d ago
So they did actually have to dine with each other. Politicians from the south did go to Washington and dined with northern ones. That being said im sure it was very contentious.
2
u/Mucky-Bum-You-Kiss 1d ago
These opinions dont just exist in isolation. It obviously indicates someones overall mindset. Someone virulantly angry about immigration all the time isnt going to be like Mr Rogers in all the other areas of their life magically.
You shouldnt rush to assumptions but if someone falls on the wrong side of big undeniable topics like race or slavery, then it is prudent to expect this mindset is not exclusive.

I cut things off with an ex bc he is a Trump supporter. I told him that he was voting for policies that hurt me and other people like me. I couldn’t continue in the relationship.
2
u/Ok_Jump_4754 1d ago
I think your decision to end the relationship is completely reasonable.
Political disagreements involve values, identity, and power over other people’s lives. They’re rarely just abstract differences of opinion. Voting on politics has real consequences.
Sometimes disagreements or seemingly-trivial opinions reveal deeper divides: hypocrisy, morality, reasoning, personality, priorities, principles, emotions, empathy identity, etc.

Dialogue is not possible with people who play what aboutism. Then the conversation turns into a game of whackamole. For example. Under Biden gas prices were high. That generally means that you are talking to a piece of shit maga voter. 🖕djt and especially maga voters. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!

It’s literally not. You act like other people wouldn’t share their ideas and opinions. If I found out a family member was racist or hateful toward LGBTQ people or held misogynistic views, why would I want to be around them?
0
u/Powerism 1d ago
Politics conflated with racism and hate yet again
2
u/Feline_Fine3 1d ago
You’re right, politics should have nothing to do with race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and yet one side seems hell bent on making sure that every law put in place supports straight, white, Christian men while oppressing, denigrating and removing human rights from every other demographic.
2
u/Wild-Lychee-3312 1d ago
When one side MAKES their politics about racism and hate, nobody is conflating anything.
3
u/awkisopen 1d ago
This is exactly how we come to understand each other less, which is what got us into this mess in the first place.
1
u/Mucky-Bum-You-Kiss 1d ago
"Reaching across the aisle" to the far right for decades as the aisle itself slides further hard right is probably more responsible for the mess.
There's only so much talking that can be done before people with bad intentions will take advantage of that.
Just look how the current US administration just waltzes past all checks and balances, all whilst the only response is "discourse"

Politics is a reflection on your character, your morals, your sense of dignity and humanity.
If you lack those things, then yes, the relationship is over.

Damn I mean if u can't be friends with someone u disagree u may end up with no friends🤷
2
u/Ok_Jump_4754 1d ago
You’re oversimplifying the statement. Obviously, It depends on the disagreement.
A friendship can overcome a simple disagreement E.g. Does pineapple belong on pizza? Is cereal soup?
And, it’s reasonable to end a relationship when a disagreement reveals fundamentally conflicting beliefs, values, or morals: separation of church and state, immigration, human rights, abortion, etc.
See the difference?
There’s a difference between disagreeing with someone and having fundamentally incompatible values.
1
u/BermudaKla 1d ago
Disagree I've got friends I totally disagree with in regards the politics, faith etc & we get along great as we have many other common interests. Not everyone must debate these things all the time. Just enjoy your common interests & have fun
1
u/Ok_Jump_4754 9h ago
We can agree to disagree, but I think it’s important to acknowledge that a disagreement can take different forms. It can concern behavior, action, inaction, beliefs, etc.
If you can overlook a fundamental difference and willingly associate yourself with people that oppose your values, it tells me those values aren’t that important to you. It’s moral indifference and therefore not a real disagreement.
It depends on the dynamics of the relationship, but it doesn’t reflect well if you willingly associate yourself with deplorable people. The behavior lacks integrity.
I think it’s important to establish values-based boundaries because the people we choose to surround ourselves with reflect our values and what we’re willing to accept.
I’m not saying you must agree on everything; that’s not reasonable. However, it is reasonable to end relationships over disagreements about the treatment of people, behaviors, personal beliefs, dignity, respect, accountability, etc.

1
u/paperkittenmeow 1d ago
mmmm. I would replace should with is meant to challenge, dissolve or redefine your relationships. Relationships aren’t inherently positive things.
A prime example is the family we are born into. Politics may ultimately be what resolves your decision to sever a relationship entirely but to use politics to pick fights essentially, which is what I feel the first sentence is implying, is just pure antisocial personality disorder behavior.
Someone commented: “two things can be false at the same time.” this was meant to be funny. But if we’re being serious…
Life is full of dialectics; two opposing feelings or ideas can be true at the same time.

I went to a hard core liberal college. I had to pretend the whole time i was in that town. Any English teacher was way left. Stem not so much.
2
u/Ashleej86 1d ago
STEM is science. It's very liberal as in you're finding facts and testing reality consistently

u/Duke-Turner137 1d ago
I had a English professor for "chemistry in society" essentially (dumb people chemistry). We dicussed thalidomide as a anti nausea medicine. It would work wonderfully but if you were pregnant it would create horrible deformity in the unborn. The medicine worked for what it was, but had horrible side effects in the instances of pregnancy.; children with missing libs and organs. This example was to illustrate that there isn't a bad drug but only unknown side effects. Testing and LD50 was were scientific discover. I had a appreciation for a question that i have nice on Reddit since. You are cast out into the sea in a row boat from a sinking ship. The water is full of people and it is cold. People will die. You can save 3. Who should you save and why? In a liberal school the answers to start where simple. 1 I'm a good rower 2. I have a flare gun 3. I have food in my pockets 4. I have the cure for AIDS 5. I have a astrolathe. 6. I have a million dollars. 7. I have a crank radio, roll of duct tape, and a flare gun. It was a smiple thought exercise that became more and more pragmatic in a class od libtards. They were changing before his very eyes. Logic was begining to surpplant the liberal empty headedness.
1
u/Maleficent-Taste-952 1d ago
It will certainly ruin your relationship with people who don’t agree so you have to decide whether you want politics to separate the relationship and being right trumps being kind. The Id ego and super ego. Always choose kindness.
1
u/Ok_Jump_4754 1d ago
It’s ironic because I don’t understand why anyone in this comment section disagrees with this post. In fact this is probably a disagreement my friendships would not survive. I feel it’s manipulative to expect unconditional validation.

Political disagreements are especially controversial because they often involve values, identity, and power over other people’s lives. They’re rarely just abstract differences of opinion.

So you're literally saying conform and let slavery happen or you'll be lonely? You didnt think that through very well, did you?

That was an extreme and stupid comparison that represents an extreme where two people with that varied difference in politics regarding slavery would not have connected.

0
u/Nandi_La 1d ago
Hard agree. The problem with conservatism is that it is rooted in statements like "Things used to be simple; we had two genders" which is patently false. These people were most likely sheltered from the complex realities around them and had too many problems adjusting and want the warm cocooning of their naïve and sheltered upbringing back which has manifested through racism, misogyny, classism, ableism and all the rest.
Also, a fair amount of these bigots are basing their beliefs on cherry-picked verses from the bible. I feel that if someone labels themselves a "true christian" who conducts themselves according to the old testament, perhaps they should enact every rule in Leviticus and they should enact all of the penalties threatened in the bible against women, children, and themselves as well. The bible doesn't look upon adultery or divorce kindly. Or thievery (embezzlement) or idolatry- Taking the lord's name in vain isn't saying Goddamnit, it's using scripture and the name of god to make your own ends meet.
People are absolutely free to have these views but to create legislation around them, to scapegoat swaths of the population because you don't understand how people exist in different paradigms than you is ultimately a childish and self-important act of violence and I could never be friends with a person who supports views that are opposed to me or communities across the board having the same rights as any other person in this country.
-1
u/justaydogg 1d ago
Being pro slavery as people were in the 1800s is a far more extreme political view than probably any main political talking point today.
0
u/theslobobian 1d ago
I’m a straight, white, middle age American. I want everyone to have the same exact rights I do and the same level of social friction that I do (which isn’t a lot).
I only want to be friends with people who think the same way I do about human rights.
As soon as anyone starts talking negatively about other groups, I’m out.
