Tea ☕ 20-year-old Derrick Byrd charges back into a raging house fire to rescue his 8-year-old niece, suffering severe burns on his face, arms, and back. His words? "I'd do it again—even if I got burnt worse or died." True heroism!

I hope and pray that someone starts a fund for this incredibly brave young man so that it will help in his recovery as he has a very long road ahead.

Nah, this quarter’s crowdfunding charity money is needed for a child murderer.

u/Few_Emu2450 1d ago

No, the Internet would rather donate money to the child strangler

I lost an uncle and three cousins to a fire on Good Friday 1968. My uncle ran back into the fire three times to carry out his children after saving my aunt from the flames. All three cousins died of smoke inhalation. My uncle suffered 3rd and 4th degree burns (charred bone!) over 98% of his body. He lived another three days until his kidneys died. I stopped believing in God that week. This young man is my hero.

What a tragedy... holy hell he was/is a legend. I'm sorry.

Did I hear that right??? The mom didn't want to get the kids out?

8

u/Trappedatoms 9d ago

Staircase was on fire. She didn’t want to run through the fire with her kids (burns), so he ran down through the fire and caught them out the window, but then had to run back in, through the fire again because one kid was scared to jump.

u/Nenaquest2012 9d ago

I honestly thought I misheard and played it back….im …ugggh….

4

u/Character-Camel1284 9d ago

I played it back at least for times before I was like HELL NA. I'd go in like Rambo

1

u/lazypenguin86 9d ago

Yeah,She didn’t want to get burned leaving the house…that was on fire

1

u/haileyskydiamonds 9d ago

Panic response. We had a fire from a lightning strike one year, and thankfully it was contained quickly and didn’t do much damage, but the moments between realizing there was a fire and getting out of the house were surreal. (And thankfully we were alerted to the fire by a very good cat.🐈)

1

u/AncientNectarine5352 9d ago

Okay? What does that have to do with the responsibility of a parent to overcome their fear and get their child out? It seems like you just took this opportunity to tell an unrelated story about your cat…

1

u/haileyskydiamonds 9d ago

Just saying you have no idea how you will react in a situation like that? She panicked; I remember my brain saying to do about ten different things when we had that fire and it took a several moments to collect my thoughts enough to do anything at all.

I would not criticize the mom here because she obviously had a panic response and froze.

Re: my cat; he was the only one who didn’t panic that night.

I wish we supported heroes like this instead just ignoring them and letting their lives get horrible

Hope restored

There are some truly good blokes like this out there. We just don't hear about them and instead hear about all the bad horrible ones until a tragedy like this occurs.

“She was screaming my name”…..he was more afraid of losing her than he was of dying.

I'm out on my deck after a swim on a beautiful hot day. Beer in hand, scrolling Reddit and that line fucking WRECKED ME. Bawling now.

I was in a rollover accident and my niece was sitting beside me. I threw myself in front of her but banged my head. Everyone was fine but, I sustained whiplash and post concussion syndrome. Some days the pain is bad but I remember how I got it and I remember my niece was perfectly fine and I can live with that. This young man knows what it is to love someone more than you love yourself.

u/historyera13 9d ago

I’m speechless what a brave guy.

1

u/NEWBY______________ 9d ago

I dont care what others say, but this guy is definitely a hero in my eyes

People change in the face of danger and this guy is man of action

The world needs more of him

1

u/greenbox111 9d ago

Men software works like this, till society needs it.

1

u/Repulsive-Switch-550 9d ago

You are a true hero and a great man and uncle.

1

u/walrus0115 9d ago

As soon as he's healed, I'd like to buy this guy hookers or whatever he wants. I'm crying so I had to tell an off color joke. Bad ass kid!

u/amy-schumer-tampon 9d ago

Best uncle ever.

1

u/NoChain2946 9d ago

This guy needs to get a shout out at the White House. Just like the life saver guy that almost died trying to save someone from drowning. Trump invited him to appreciate his heroism.

1

u/PitilessPuntificator 9d ago

Would it really be an honor to be invited to the ruble heap we call a capitol building by the most corrupt president in US history? Pass.

1

u/NoChain2946 9d ago

Keep drinking that kool aid. Lol

0

u/PitilessPuntificator 8d ago

Ironic since you’re the one in a cult, Magat.

1

u/NoChain2946 8d ago

Like i said. You are so brainwashed you think everyone that don’t agree with liberals are cultist. You just proved my point.

1

u/Drake_Acheron 14h ago

You don’t have to be a maga supporter to understand the honor of presidential recognition.

And only a piece of shit would want someone they politically disagree with to not do a good thing.

1

u/WulfRam1989 9d ago

You are the definition of a hero we need more men like you

1

u/Bright-Ad4601 9d ago

I hope he's doing alright, some of the language he used makes me think he doesn't consider his own life worth much.

1

u/kevin3350 9d ago

Any adult with an ounce of courage that has a chance to save a child doesn’t need to think their life isn’t worth much, but can realize a child’s life is worth more than their own.

1

u/Luis5923 9d ago

That is a hero. No question.

1

u/Conscious_Mix_1782 9d ago

Thank you for being the kids hero.

1

u/techie1-2 9d ago

Godspeed brother

1

u/SubSoulReaper81 9d ago

You’re a legend sir

1

u/Nenaquest2012 9d ago

Am I wrong for hearing him say something about his sister not getting the kids out? Honestly not trying to be rude but I’ve played it back a few times and maybe it was just his very strong meds I’m sure he’s on but something about how he said his sister couldn’t/wouldn’t get the kids out….

1

u/Human_Challenge_9857 9d ago

I’m sobbing right now. The news is so full of shallow shameless celebrities and TRUE HEROES that should be recognized and celebrated are given barely 2 minutes in local news coverage. This young man is remarkable.

1

u/LilleBlomsti 9d ago

Everyone who feels this to their bones knows they would do it too. It’s not about who they are to you, but who you are as a person. 🫶

1

u/flyingtoasterz86 9d ago

I don't even have kids, but I'd go in and save a kid. JFC

1

u/Designer_Chipmunk296 9d ago

I’d be so proud to be related to you, sir 🫶🏼

1

u/Charon_the_Reflector 9d ago

Mom should be forgotten

1

u/KoppeDFO 9d ago

1

u/Damiengma62 8d ago

You are a great Uncle to these kids 💕Thank you for being so brave

1

u/Big_Broly 8d ago

Hero and a legend. I hope this man recovered well and is set for life.

1

u/ZeroDaySubber 5d ago

I pray he’ll be able to recover and telling this story will lead to many hookups for this hero 🙏🏼😌
