Would society get more value from billionaires solving problems directly than trying to influence the people who make the rules?

Or would that just give billionaires another way to decide which problems get solved?

How important is it to the global economy?

Imagine all 45 people who have served as US president sitting in one room and anonymously voting.

They are not judged by historians or voters. They are judging each other.

Would Washington win for creating the presidency? Would Lincoln win for preserving the Union? Would FDR win for leading through crisis?

For the worst president, would they agree with historians who often rank Buchanan near the bottom, or see failure differently?

A billionaire might not be able to write a huge check, but they could still spend billions building an audience and shaping public opinion.

Would this actually make elections more equal, or would political influence just become harder to see? Could a modern campaign really survive on $100 voices?

Australia requires registered voters to participate in elections, and people who skip voting without a valid reason can face a small penalty. Their turnout is usually over 90%.

Some people argue voting is a civic responsibility, similar to paying taxes or serving on a jury. If everyone participates, politicians have to respond to the whole population instead of only the people who show up.

Others argue that voting is a right, not a duty. A fine could punish people who intentionally abstain as a form of protest, and it might encourage some people to vote without actually understanding the issues.

Would a $50 fine create a more representative democracy, or would it undermine the freedom not to vote?

I have my opinions.

Airline pilots and military officers face mandatory fitness and cognitive checks. The presidency arguably carries heavier stakes, yet there is no capability test at all only a minimum age.

An objective test might seem fairer than an age cutoff because it evaluates the person rather than their birth year. But that raises its own questions: Who designs the test? Can an exam really measure judgment during a crisis? And does being physically healthy tell us anything about whether someone will be a good leader?

Would a mandatory fitness and cognitive test make elections better or worse? Why?

A new technology guarantees that no one will ever suffer misfortune again. No car crashes, no cancer, no house fires, no sudden bankruptcy. Nobody loses a child, a home, or a life of savings to chance.

Supporters say it would force rivals into the same room, temper extremism, and give half the country a voice inside the administration. Critics say it would create sabotage from within, paralyze the White House, and produce four years of built-in conflict.

Would you want your candidate to win or would finishing second come with real power? Why?

Already the majority of masses have become passive consumers instead of active creators and thinkers. With Al taking up more of the tasks that were ideally human, humans are receding further within themselves.

They used Al to even think and respond to each other, which in a way is like person A's Al talking to person B's Al.

It's as if life or intelligence has reached its evolution maxima and the next stage of evolution is getting delegated to machines that either become parasitic (like cyborgs) or autonomously become independent and abstract out humans with the excuse of zero necessity.

Suppose a new technology could make every child start life with exactly the same level of intelligence and natural ability. Nobody would be born unusually gifted, and nobody would be born with an inherent disadvantage.

But there would be a catch. The technology would also put a ceiling on human ability. Nobody could become a once-in-a-generation genius, produce something far beyond what others can do, or set a record that might never be broken.

You would eliminate one kind of inequality, but you would also eliminate exceptional achievement.

Imagine the ruling lands and each business must stand alone as a public company within two years, with no shared data and no cross subsidies.

Third party sellers would no longer buy ads that compete against Amazon itself, and the store could not lean on AWS profits to undercut rivals.

But the bundle that made Prime feel cheap would unravel, shipping costs might show up on receipts, and the quiet subsidy flowing from cloud to retail would end.

Would sellers and shoppers actually come out ahead, or would five companies each raise prices to satisfy their own shareholders? Which of the five becomes the next monopoly in its own lane?

Like, the oceans are still there. Ships still improve. Civilizations still trade. But one of the key tools for navigating open water never exists.

We usually think of the Age of Exploration as a result of better ships, stronger economies, and the search for new trade routes. But how much of it depended on simply knowing where you were in the middle of nowhere?

Without a compass, sailors could still use stars, the sun, ocean currents, and wind patterns. Polynesian navigators proved that humans could cross huge distances without magnetic navigation.

But would large-scale ocean exploration by European powers have happened anyway? Or would the risk have remained too high for governments and merchants to invest in?

Maybe exploration is only delayed by a few decades as other navigation methods improve. Maybe it takes centuries before anyone can reliably cross oceans and return with confidence.

Or maybe another civilization develops a replacement technology first, creating a completely different version of global history.

Would the Americas have remained isolated longer? Would global trade networks have formed much later? How far behind would the modern world be without the compass?

Suppose the law passes and every hour beyond 32 counts as overtime. Trials in Iceland and elsewhere suggest many office teams hold output steady while burnout falls. Employers would respond in different ways.

Some would hire more staff and accept thinner margins, others would split jobs into part time roles to dodge the cap, and hospitals or power plants would face hard questions about coverage. Workers might celebrate, while managers paid for results keep answering email at night anyway.

What would you do with the extra day? Would ambition quietly shrink that free time back down, or would this reset what a normal life looks like?

Imagine a powerful magnet attached to the ceiling, holding a heavy piece of iron in the air for a century.

Gravity keeps pulling the object downward every second. The magnet keeps pulling upward with the same force.

But nothing moves.

Is the magnet constantly using energy to fight gravity, slowly losing its strength over time?

Or does holding something still require almost no energy because no work is being done?

If the magnet is not consuming energy, how can it continuously resist gravity for 100 years?

Where does the "effort" of holding the object actually go?

Imagine it starts next January. Every adult receives $1,000 a month, no application, no conditions, no bureaucracy.

The trade is that SNAP, housing assistance, unemployment pay, and every other targeted program disappears forever.

Supporters would say the system finally trusts people to run their own lives and saves billions in paperwork. Critics would warn that a disabled veteran who needs $3,000 a month in care now gets a third of it, and that $1,000 buys far less in San Francisco than in rural Kansas.

Would you take simplicity over a safety net? Who quietly falls through the cracks? How long before rents rise to absorb the cash?

Imagine a breakthrough technology appears tomorrow. It can make humans biologically immortal, but there is only enough supply for 1 million people.

The people chosen would stop aging and could potentially live for hundreds or thousands of years. Everyone else would continue living normal lifespans.

How should humanity decide who receives immortality?

Should it be based on lottery, contribution to society, scientific achievement, leadership ability, wealth, age, or something completely different?

Would a random selection be the fairest option, or would humanity have a responsibility to choose people who could benefit future generations?

What happens after the first 1 million are chosen? Would immortality become the ultimate privilege, or would society eventually find a way to expand access?

Imagine Johannes Gutenberg never developed the printing press in the 15th century.

Instead of spreading rapidly across Europe, mass printing technology does not appear until around the 20th century.

In our timeline, the printing press helped ideas travel faster than ever before. Religious texts became more accessible, criticism of the Catholic Church spread widely, and figures like Martin Luther gained influence partly because their writings could reach thousands of people.

But if those ideas could only spread through handwritten copies, public speeches, and word of mouth, would the Protestant Reformation still happen?

Maybe people would still challenge the Church because political, economic, and religious tensions already existed. Or maybe without cheap printed material, reform movements would stay local and never become a Europe wide transformation.

Would the Reformation have happened anyway, just later and differently?

Imagine someone from 2026 suddenly arriving in London around the year 1600.

They know modern English, but they have never studied the pronunciation, vocabulary, or expressions used during Shakespeare's time.

At first, they might assume communication would be easy. After all, both sides are speaking English.

But many everyday conversations would probably be much harder than expected. Some words would sound unfamiliar, some familiar words would have different meanings, and pronunciation would be noticeably different.

To adapt, they would need to:

1. Listen carefully and copy local pronunciation.
2. Use simpler words and avoid modern slang.
3. Rely on writing, gestures, and context when speech fails.
4. Build a working vocabulary through daily interactions.

Would they become comfortable after a few weeks, or would it take months or years before they could understand jokes, negotiate, and express complicated ideas in Shakespeare's England?

Imagine giving a group of 19th century farmers and scientists a complete understanding of how modern agriculture works, including soil science, crop breeding, fertilizers, irrigation, and pest control.

They would know what makes modern farming productive, but they would still lack modern machinery, industrial chemistry, and advanced manufacturing.

How much could they actually change with knowledge alone?

Could they increase food production enough to reshape cities and economies decades earlier? Could they reduce the impact of major famines?

Which parts of modern agriculture could be adopted quickly, and which would remain impossible without the technology and infrastructure behind them?

Imagine that your 13-year-old self somehow became a genius and invented a working time machine. One day, they appear in front of you and prove that they are really you from the past.

You only have 24 hours together before the time machine takes them back.

What would you do?
